Sacred Reviews: You and I

Introduction

You and I is a short comedic role-playing game created by a small team of developers using RPG Maker 2003. Sadly, the game is a bit of a mixed bag in my opinion. On the comedy side of things the game does alright for itself with some classic buddy humor and absurd situations. On the gameplay side of things the game doesn't fare as well. Though, I'll get to that in a little bit. First, I'd like to take a quick look at the story.

Story

On the story side of things the game starts out on a rather generic note with our two heroes waking up with amnesia and trapped inside of a fortress full of corpses. With a little ingenuity they manage to take down the barrier and begin their way to the Overlord's castle since they are obviously heroes that have been summoned from another world to kill the source of all evil in the world. Despite the generic start the game does shift towards a few unexpected plot twists and reveals.

Another positive note about this game is that it allows you to experience the game from the perspective of either of the main characters. This is a good thing since it allows the developer to further show case the personalities of Victor and Fermat by showing how each of these characters would approach a given problem. It also offers a somewhat alluring hook to play this game a second time. Though, I have to admit that it wasn't enough to convince me this game was worth a revisit. Though, I tend to be a won and done kind of guy when it comes to video games.

Gameplay

As mentioned previously the gameplay in You and I is rather weak. While the game does utilize a combat mechanic that I'm rather fond of in the form of random encounters. The inclusion of random encounters in this game just feels like a desperate attempt to pad out the game. This is because Victor and Fermat both start out with potent special abilities and high stats. This means the random encounters serve no real purpose since you have no need to grind for levels, money, or items right from the get go.

Another issue the game suffers from is a lack of challenge. While the game was probably always intended to be easy considering the emphasis on story over combat. Unfortunately this lack of uninteresting combat even applies to the final few boss battles in this game.

Graphics

On the graphical side of things the game does feature some custom art work which always a positive in my book. Outside of the custom art work the rest of the mapping is decent enough from what I can remember.

Conclusion

You and I is a short comedy game that contains a few good jokes, but is hindered by boring combat at the best of times and completely pointless combat which only serves to pad out the narrative at the worst of times. And while the game has been updated since I last played it. I'm not sure if the described changes would be enough to push this game from a mere time waster to a game truly worth experiencing for yourself.

Thanks for the review! I agree with pretty much all of your points. Though I wasn't really aiming to pad the game out - it certainly does come across that way. (I intended the game to be shorter than it was) Would have been smarter to cut out the random battles completely, but I was afraid of running the risk of people then saying it wasn't a proper game xD

Bad decisions; lesson learned. 3 day game? Ignore battles and focus on your other stuff, Maki.

Thanks again and thanks for taking the time to play.
