Synopsis:

Two teenagers, brother and sister, living in a remote village, find in the basement of their grandfather a treasure map. Excited by their find they leave the village to try to find where this map leads...

They soon find an old cave that no one seems to know and deep inside they discover a giant robot that will change their destiny.
Will they uncover the secret behind the Simurions, these robots from another time?

What is "Fighting Robots Quest"?

This is an RPG featuring a world where "Simurions", ancient robots from a lost civilisation, have awaken. The goal is to discover them and using them through battles.

My inspirations were Pokémon and Suikoden, for its large roster of playable caracters, the first Legend of Zelda and Final Fantasy 6 for their open world and narrative approach. My vision for this project was to make a simple but solid RPG with enough depth to be compelling and have a lot of replay value.

The project runs since October 2008.

What are the features?

-No less than 140 playable characters.
-Robots to find, build, customize and upgrade.
-A world every player can travel their own way through exploration capacities that they can learn in any order they want.
-More than 100 battle skills to learn.
-A fuse system between robots to make advanced ones.
-A rich world without to much hand holding packed with secrets.
-Two versions of the game offering some exclusive robots and stuff.
-A giveaway system between players to give robots using in game passwords.

Playable characters: The Simurions!

The list is pretty long and won't be completely revealed before the project is over because discovering them is where the fun is.
But here's some:

This is the first Simurions you can find. The player can choose one of them based on its final form, each of them have its own pros and cons.

As you can see there's various types and elements: Types are about building and growing aspects and elements are about strengths and weaknesses. Try to make a balanced team!

Project update 9/3/20

Hello everyone!

Since this year is supposed to be the last one for the project I'm working on it even more since january. Basically I try to work 3 hours a day instead of 1.

It's been already 2 months and the progress is good but there is still a ton of stuff to be done.

During this year I will need some help for playtesting the game. For anything like bug testing or just fun testing. If anybody wants to help on that, just tell me. :)

You can't. For now, the capacities that allow you to cut bushes or break rocks are not available. The system will be showed in the next demo but it will be frozen till later demos because of its nature. (The fact you can learn capacities in the order you want so I have to make all the possibilities before activating the system).

So basically, it's not done yet. See that as bonus areas that will be activated only in later demos. There will be a couple of demos through summer and autumn without this system integrated but I plan to put it in the game by the end of the year.

EDIT : also, I wanted to add this. Please note that I'm not english native. I knew that english natives players will see mistakes and oddities in the game texts.

I plan to have a true english update one day. I will need to find someone in the community that would be ok to correct everything. But I'll have to wait until the game is done to do that. Thank you in advance for your understanding.
If you need any proofreading/editing for the final release or any other demos, let me know. I'd be glad to help.

Thank you!

Two people have send me message about that as well, they seem very enthusiastic about that and I'm glad of it. So yes, basically, any review of the script is welcome. I don't want to let down anybody that help so I guess I will make a blog post about this and show the revisions you guys made. Maybe we can discuss about them as well.

Even if I'm the one that create the story you are the ones that will make it good to read. So your help is well welcome!

the instruction manual does not work. (not in game i mean the file in folder)

i wonder if the 2003 engine requires you to have all the maps files like that. its a shame.

but if the best robot master is within you its not your story XD you have the soul of the machine king! :O

what gender to play as! XD if this was a BR troll i would of been upset! :D

for the name entry i suggest looking up a keyboard script so you can type it instead

auto skipping text! NOOOOOOOOOOOO

is that a evil professor oak!?

those beds...so cute :3

would of liked a save location inside are home or right outside it

the grammar has a lot of mistakes, this is gonna be depressing to fix everything by the end

why does your brother follow you into the basement just to complain your not supposed to be there? he is a hypocrite of course!
he even says something stupid like "what if you break something" well...if something breaks it breaks...further even is a kid at least in my case i rarely had such problems with accidentally breaking things

i went all the way to the end of the cave and nothing happened! i am upset now!
^did not notice one of the paths

where is your grandpa anyway? he should be too old to leave the village!

MAJOR plot hole this early in? it goes from a apparently sentient being to a normal robot that can only act on commands???

auto skipping hell part 2!

the text dumps are painful....shut up grandpa and let me play!

during the ridiculously long scene with grandpa we get a plot whole.
he says that all of the pemikian civilization is gone then a bit later after he gives you some stuff from the basement says that we should meet a descendent of the pemikians (they are all dead no???)

no save after ALL OF THAT! i am so annoyed right now!
and theres a choice :/ guh!

that island map is really awesome tho!

oh we can use a menu now!? the game should of told us in fact should of just let us use it earlier!

this game would benefit from a name changer at least for the simurans

transformations are awesome! :D shame it does not tell you if something evolves and how

that megaman music tho XD

trophy's increase your teams stats?! awesome! :D

failing to escape=annoying! and speaking of that i want a item or equip that negates random battles please!

demo end at boat! yay!

also want to add how weird it is that the simurans are not common knowledge when they openly roam the field right outside of town :D

General Gameplay ? hours theres no time keeper

Grammar aside this was a rather interesting game. as a former fan of pokemon this to some degree gave me a nostalgic feeling.
i loved the choice of which starter you obtain and the evolving. also that as of this moment theres no over complicated diverse stat building. i like things simple and this pulled it off well. i was a bit ify about the gear idea even tho it makes since but so far it did not effect my enjoyment of the game.

my biggest complaint i suppose...would be the saving. i hated the beginning of the game as you could not free save or even save at a location until you are setting out on your journey you gain access to your menu. that saved the game from being completely annoying.

i don't personally recognize the sprites which were apparently taken from other sources so it was refreshing to see unique sprites even animated ones!
after seeing enough set pose pictures any little improvement is really welcome!

i think 4 party members may also be too much tho considering the max power potential of a single simurans(forgot name ok!?) can wipe out enemy teams easily.so if theres not at least a couple planned areas in the game that will be challenging it might be disappointing in that regard. i summon Mechtwo!

Overall
this is coming from someone that generally does not give a F about mechs. but this was entertaining as hell!

one extremely annoying glitch during a part of the game aside its a epic game more people should play!
i did not do a lets play mostly because of that glitch
Hey, I have been playing the demo for about an hour now. It's looking pretty great so far, honestly! The only comments I have at this point are:

1) Grammar/spelling/text errors. Maybe I'm being overly picky here, but I can barely seem to get through a single line of dialog without noticing some form of a text error, be it grammatical, spelling, etc. It seems like the demo was barely proofread at all when it comes to the character text... and btw, in the Statistic screen, you spelled "Strength" as "Strenght." Just little stuff like that started to get extremely annoying after a while.

2) I have encountered a weird glitch twice now. I just got to the point where you can start capturing pokemon... er, I mean, rebuilding mechs. (:P) It seems that every once in a while, I get a pure black screen when I should be getting an encounter. It tends to only happen after I have a battle party of greater than 1... I'm not entirely sure what causes it, but the symptoms may help you diagnose the bug. It makes the sound effect for an encounter, and the screen goes dark. Then the background music resumes after a second instead of the battle music... and the encounter never initializes. And then the game freezes in that state. Fortunately I didn't lose too much data either time, but it's a little annoying. If I find more information about what causes it, I'll let you know.
Revisions

Welcome!
You are going to embark on a great adventure. You will meet many interesting and
mysterious people. Friend or foe, They all share one thing in common they are robotics enthusiasts like myself.

You will became a great robot master one day. This is your story and I bet it will be a memorable one.

Before you begin, which version of the game do you want to play?

-> "Mechanical Version"
-> "Genetic Version"
What is the difference?

Both versions are similar but each version has its own exclusive playable characters and events. Trading with a friend with a different version is essential if you gotta collect em all.

I see... so you are a boy!
Sorry, I have poor eye sight.

You have a bother. What is his name?

Now your adventure begins. Sorry to keep you waiting. See you soon.

Year 20XX
The world still abundant in nature has been experiencing a great technological revolution for decades.

Thanks to the advancement of biology and cybernetics what was impossible yesterday is today's reality.

But there are some who wishes to push technology even further...

What will happen if the creation of men exceeds the creation of gods.

Sister: I have been waiting for ages! Hurry, we need to go to granps'. I can't wait to hear one of his stories.

Dad: Hey, little man. Wanna help out your daddy? Haha, just kdding!
Our Mecha-Charger is all the help I need.

~House to the right of player home~
Man: Do you know some people battle with their own custom robots. I would love to see that someday.
Woman: Nowadays we depend on robots for everything, even the simplest of tasks such as cleaning, road works and delivery.

~Outside player home~
Man: Its a beautiful day for fishing.
Girl: Sometimes I play near the Placid Forest. But I don't go inside. I am not scared but my parents wont let me. Do you think there are some big bad monsters deep inside the forest?
Boy: I like searching inside all sorts of pots, jars and boxes. You never know what you might find.
Granny: When I was young we hand none of these cloning, self aware robots or even purified air.

~House to the left of player home~
Teen/Girl: Root village is very peaceful. A bit too peaceful if you ask me. We have to cross Placid Forest and Indal Canyon for markets or schools or any place of interest.
Boy: I don't like school. So robots bring me homework everyday.

~Granps~
Outside
Sister: Hurry!

Inside
Sister: Where is he?

Sister: We should not be here. What if we break something?
Player: Something weird between those books. (Whole sentence can be deleted)
Player: What is this?
Sister: Looks like an old map?
Player: It does.
Gramps loved to adventure. Maybe its a relic from those days.
Sister: Really? I wonder what he had found.
Player: Maybe..
He didn't find it.
Sister: What do you mean?
Player: May be the treasure is still there.
Sister: You think so?
Player: I am not sure. But the treasure is very close to the village. May be we should look for it.
Sister: Yes! That would be awesome!
Player: We might even find the treasure.
Edit:
Player: The map is pointing to the forest to the west.
Can't save because can't open the menu because everything but the arrow keys opens the map. I will wait for a fix before the next update as don't want to replay he begging over and over again.

BTW, the game is a little heavy on text. My revisions shortens some of them. But you might also like to think about lessening the number of text boxes.
My revision has some typos too. Hope it wont be a bother.
For everyone :

As for collecting datas from players, let me ask you which Simurion at the begining did you choose? And which version of the game (Mechanical/Genetic) did you select?

Now, let me answer each of your comments.

Shayoko

the instruction manual does not work.
What happens with the Word file (instruction manual)? Do you get an error message?

That's weird... but anyway you can read it online on the webpage, here : https://fightingrobotsquest.wordpress.com/instruction-manual/

i wonder if the 2003 engine requires you to have all the maps files like that. its a shame.
Yes, it was changed afterward I think, sometimes it can be useful for debugging but, yeah, it's kind of messy.

what gender to play as! XD if this was a BR troll i would of been upset! :D
I don't know what is a BR troll (tried to google it but don't find anything). In fact it's just a joke because I know a lot of male gamers like to play as a girl in games, the contrary is much more rare. That's just a little joke for them.

Haha, you make me smile a lot with everything you have to say about the game. That's cool. :D

MAJOR plot hole this early in? it goes from a apparently sentient being to a normal robot that can only act on commands???
Maybe it's sarcasm, I'm not sure, hehe... but it's just because the god simurion is returning to a more basic form of itself. So it behave like a normal one.
I don't wanted it to be the lead of the events but maybe I could make it speak a little more, I don't know. I guess it would be to much, maybe, we already have the brother/sister that stick with us.
I wil make it speak again when it'll get back to it's final form.

during the ridiculously long scene with grandpa we get a plot whole.
he says that all of the pemikian civilization is gone then a bit later after he gives you some stuff from the basement says that we should meet a descendent of the pemikians (they are all dead no???)
Nice catch! Yeah, I should have made him say "almost all the Pemikians disapeared" or something like that. I could rework this a little bit.

no save after ALL OF THAT! i am so annoyed right now!
and theres a choice :/ guh!
You coud save just before. ;)
When you go out grandpa's house the save option is available in the menu. But yes, I didn't tell it directly to the player, you're right. It's written in the Notebook. I'm assuming most players will see the save option by themself after a couple a minutes, like you did. I want to avoid explaining to much stuff especially stuff that aren't tied with the lore of the game. But I guess in this case I will explain it.

that island map is really awesome tho!
Thanks! But it's just a rough sketch for now.

transformations are awesome! :D shame it does not tell you if something evolves and how
Wow, you made Mushiba upgrade as early in the game? I could not imagine that! You like to grind for sure. :P
Mmh, yes, the stats upgrades are not shown, it would be time consuming to do that but maybe I can do something simple like showing basic curves growing or I don't know.
Most of the time, every stats increase some more than other with bumps. Very rarely stat descrease, most common is the Speed if a Simurion got bigger.
Also, the abilities could change too.

failing to escape=annoying! and speaking of that i want a item or equip that negates random battles please!
Sadly I can't do a lot with the escape formula.
Yes, there will be item like the Repels in Pokemon.

also want to add how weird it is that the simurans are not common knowledge when they openly roam the field right outside of town :D
Yes, hard to make a "pokemon-clone" without the same logic of Pokemon, where everything is Pokemon and everyone like them. :P

In this case, I hint that with Prof. Boulon but maybe it's not that obvious : He said that the wild Simurions will attack the hero because he have one with him (more on 'why' later in the game). So you can assume the Simurions are hidden and nobody see them, like very careful animals. Maybe the have something like stealth camouflage as well. Maybe I should said that somewhere in the game.
But yeah, it's a bit weird.

my biggest complaint i suppose...would be the saving. i hated the beginning of the game as you could not free save or even save at a location until you are setting out on your journey you gain access to your menu. that saved the game from being completely annoying.

Yes, I understand. It's kind of hard for me. The fact is it's not possible to show the menu before having the set up for (the Simurion mostly). I could add more save points, I did it in previous versions but it was a lot of saving before having really something to fear about. I felt to much.
I don't know where you coming from, what are you standards with saving features but I'm used to games that do not allow to save when we want, in fact I think Pokemon is the only game I played that feature this kind of save system.

The real question is why did you find it annoying? It seemed a big issue for you.

I will go a step deeper here and explain my visions about that. I don't allow saving sometime to avoid the "testing effect". For example, before the choice of the four God Simurions I don't want to add a save, because I want the choice to feel like a real one. Maybe with a save, some players would test every possibilities the reset. I didn't want that, for me it's something that can prevent immersion.

Grammar aside this was a rather interesting game. as a former fan of pokemon this to some degree gave me a nostalgic feeling.
i loved the choice of which starter you obtain and the evolving. also that as of this moment theres no over complicated diverse stat building.
Thank you! Really happy you enjoyed it!

As for the stat building. There will be a system for this in the next demo but it's WAY easier than Pokemon dread EV system. I hope you'll like it.

i think 4 party members may also be too much tho considering the max power potential of a single simurans(forgot name ok!?) can wipe out enemy teams easily.so if theres not at least a couple planned areas in the game that will be challenging it might be disappointing in that regard. i summon Mechtwo!
There will be fights against 2 or 3 foes as well. Yes the 4 VS 1 seems unfair lol but since enemies will be at good levels it won't be alway easy. The battles aren't like Pokemon where each battles is a real duel. It's more like a Final Fantasy game where you can breeze through some battles.

The game can be really easy if you grind in fact, I never took the grinding as mandatory because some players really hate (I read that a lot about RPG) that but I saw most players did some grinding even if it's not necessary. Haha!

The difficulty is tricky because every players play differently and sometimes just some small choice can make a big difference. I've seen player telling me that they beat a boss easily and some that lost 5 times against him.

I plan to make the game a bit harder for normal fights. I think the bosses are enough challenging for most players.

this is coming from someone that generally does not give a F about mechs. but this was entertaining as hell!
Thank you!! I'm really happy that the game still be interesting for you.

(That's funny, one of my previous game was titled "KnightBlade Story", what a coincidence :P).

Thanks again for your feedbacks! And for the script revision.
It's really motivating!

Yes, I knew it would be this way. I already have a lot of help on this topic. I will do a revision of the script at one point.

There was proofreading, a lot, but by non english natives. I'm french and the people who play the game before you guys were french too. I guess even if we can talk english it's hard to do it well, haha. So sorry for the trouble...

I have encountered a weird glitch twice now. I just got to the point where you can start capturing pokemon... er, I mean, rebuilding mechs. Mmh, this one seems tricky. I already saw something like that but the game didn't freeze. Are you sure it was frozen? Did you try pressing buttons? Maybe you could here the menu pop up sound of something. I wonder if it was not just a fade in that never came. I know RPG Maker 2003 has some weird glitch like that, I came accros one particulary but it crashes the game (error message from windows then the game closes). Sadly in this case I can not do much but for your issues it seems to be on my side, really weird you had it twice and I never have it even playing one hundred time the first hours of the game. Hopefully you didn't loose to much. Save often!

Thank you for your help and I hope you could enjoy the game even with the english issues and those weird glitches. :)

Everything, even the validation button for talking to people? Is it a bug?
I'm not sure to understand.

My guess it's that is normal behavior. The game won't allow save for some time because there is not much treat at this point and if you continue to play, every 10 minutes or so the game will ask you if he wants to save.

Maybe the game speak too much. I'm the kind a player that hate when games speak too much, so that's hard for me to take that. :P
I was raised with 8/16 bit games that have only few lines of just the bare minimum and after the 5th generation I feel most RPG have too much texts for me. Can't really play a post 2000' RPG without being bored in fact. I thought my game was more like old 16bit ones where texts are not that heavy.

Aside from that, some people told me the story and the characters could be more developped so it's hard to have both side of players happy.

I guess when the game will have good writing it will be easier to accept more texts.

Thanks for the revision!
@Saiten: Please don't multipost. Instead, just add it to your previous post via the Edit button, okay? It is against site rules, so remember that in the future.

abut Mechanical or Genetic i am not sure what the difference? is like real Robot or Super Robot?
version: Genetic

first Simurion: Alt Eisen Riese
*is so dame hard to take Alt Eisen Riese or Cybuster (>_<) wish i can take both *

to Boulon plz plz plzzzz add Granzon and Astranagant and Dis Astranagant
Oh, so you are a mech fan! (you know them better than me. :P)

The difference is like in Pokemon versions (blue/red...) You won't found the same Simurions in the game. ^^

Wow, surprised one of your inspirations isn't Robotrek. Pretty neat game!
Thank you!

Yes, I never played Robotrek and also never heard of it before doing some researches about my project (I lived in Europe when I was young so guess the game didn't come there back in the day). The game looks fun though!

I played a little bit of this game. It has a lot of polish to it and has a nice buildup in the beginning! It's very much like Mecha-Pokemon by way of Mother 3 and Super Robot Wars graphics. It's a pretty enjoyable game so far.

Here's a couple of comments with screenshots:

But what if you're a girl who wants to play as a boy? Hehe :P

Seeing actual Mother 3 characters feels a little jarring to me. Hello, Orange Haired Kumatora!

I picked the mechanical fire-based guy. He looks pretty cool!

You seem very good at pacing and mapping, and it looks like a ton of work has gone into this. :DDDD Good job! I'll have to play more in the future!

Thank you!!!
I'm happy you liked it so far. :)

-Oh, you know, some people take this silly joke too seriously, ha ha ! :P

-Yes, I can understand that the graphics can look weird when you know Mother 3. Maybe I could change a little more these sprites to make it more beliviable.

Update me if you continue playing. ;)

Haha, yeah, I'm just being silly. I really like that you gave the option to choose what gender to play as, though ^_^

"-Yes, I can understand that the graphics can look weird when you know Mother 3. Maybe I could change a little more these sprites to make it more beliviable."

It's not terrible or anything. I just have a lot of love for Mother 3 so I think about these things. The high quality feel of the game makes it not as much a big deal.

Demo update? Yes, I've posted the 2nd demo earlier this year. :)
