UPDATE INFO:

V1.4: Sprint is now a toggle (Yay!), one minor bug fixed (Amelia's sprite showed up twice in one cutscene) and sprinting disabled on one particular map for ambiance reasons.

V1.3: A few minor fixes, one or two typos fixed, And those Defensive Charm Items now have a tiny bit more defense power as well as minor HP regeneration to make them more useful.

V1.2: TONS of typos fixed, and a few passability error squashed. Huge thanks to Neversilent for finding them all.

In fact, considering how much he's helped find bugs in my released work in this game and in the past, I'm going to credit him as a tester.

V1.1
Bug fixed - Healing items didn't cure poison before. Now they do. Sorry about that!

A short side story in the "Shackles of Varn" universe (the same world as Illusions of Loyalty).

(This was my Entry for the June 2015 Write a Game contest)

Please be considerate about posting spoilers in the comment section below.

Anything from the start of the 3rd floor (The Sanctum, it's purple colored) onwards is spoiler territory, so please be considerate of others and use

tags (or just click the little eyeball thingy when typing a comment) when talking about the endgame stuff so new players don't get things spoiled, alright? Thanks.

A Vanguard and a self-styled Dungeon Delver enter a Forbidden Shrine...

As they crawl deeper down the rabbit hole, they will uncover a long-buried truth...and a terrible foe.

Gameplay:
Heresies of Discord is a story-driven Dungeon Crawler type of game.

Scattered throughout the Forbidden Shrine are clues as to its origins and purpose. Finding these clues increases your HP, and thus, your ability to survive the trials ahead. Gather clues, discover useful items, and slay foes in swift 1-on-1 battles to uncover the full mystery of the Shrine.

Combat is resolved with an ATB style, acting as a hyrbid between action and turn based combat. Swift thinking, good reflexes and careful timing will all serve you well here.

Enemy encounters and items (including healing) are all limited in number. You must use your skills and resources wisely if you want to survive the trip all the way to the bottom...

Characters:
Carol Towers

An accomplished and loyal Vanguard, having joined the order as a young girl. While she prefers quiet study on Mercy's Isle, she's an accomplished swords-woman who does not shy from danger and has stared down many a deadly monster. Often works directly under Saint Thomas, whom she respects greatly.

Amelia Kyes

A self-proclaimed "Archeologist". While her methods are a bit crude and she acts more like an "Adventurer" than a scholar, she does indeed take great interest in ruins from ancient times and is familiar with many old and forgotten kingdoms and tribes. As well, she's a self-taught wielder of Magic, and while her technique might not be the most impressive, she makes up for it with good instincts and creativity.

Saint Thomas

One of the seven Saints of the Vanguard Order, and Carol's scholarly mentor. One of the few Saints concerned about the rising level of aggression the Vanguard Order has been showing lately. Not one to shy away from unorthodox methods, he has entrusted this mission to Carol, knowing full well that the two of them are committing heresy against the Vanguard Order...

Other features:

Difficulty settings:
There are four difficulty settings, catering to casual or story-first play (Mercy's Path), as well as hardcore players (Pain's Path), as well as two modes in between.

It's possible to drop down to a lower difficulty mode mid-game, if you feel you took on a mode that's too hard for you.

Multiple endings:

Disappointed that your supplies ran out, and that you can't make it to the end of the dungeon this time? You can choose to "Abandon" your mission at any time, and you will get one of 6 endings depending on when you chose to turn back. Good luck reaching the end, and getting the final ending!

New game in this setting!

I probably should have posted this weeks ago, but hey.

If you subscribed to this game, you may enjoy the next game in this setting, Glories of the hunt!

If you enjoyed Heresies of Discord for the characters and lore, you'll likely enjoy this one as well, as it delves into more of the deeper lore of the World of Varn. :)

Awesome! I subscribed right away and will download it soon. Perhaps I'll write a review for the game as well.
Would you like me to give you a test report on the rest of the game in case I find anything?

I played the whole game from start to finish today (on normal difficulty) and had a great time with it. I sent a little bug report your way, and you can expect a review soon enough.
This was one of the most awesome games I played here!

Despite the fact that if you avoid all of the non-obligatory combats, the game becomes quite easy in the Fury difficulty and with the lowest combat speed, the great story made up for that. :)

I just have two questions to ask:
(I'll put this in a hide tag because there are GIGANT SPOILERS HERE!)
1) So then the Archsaints were worshippers of Pain then? Because the second ending in which Carol is in prision let me thinking...
2) How did excactly Discord came back to the world at the end? Because I didn't excactly got that part.

Once again, great game! I hope Mayhem Maiden turns out just as good as this one! :D

P.S. : The final boss theme was really cool. XD
:D I'm glad you enjoyed it!

The combat is a toss up, actually. See, if you do the combat, you'll have less current HP and have to rely on items to heal, but you'll have higher max HP as a result. And having higher max health means that you don't need to waste turns popping potions in battle! :D

As for your super spoiler questions:
1) Not really. Carol just suspects Hadrian (the leader of the purifiers) worships Pain because of how much gusto he has with the whole "torture you for information" thing. :P
2) 2 REALLY powerful sources of magic were released in the game. Considering the shrine was already super-saturated in magic, that little bump was juuuust enough for her to manifest again.

As for Mayhem Maiden, I hope it turns out great too. It's just slow going because every floor had a giant gimmick/puzzle to it, and designing those is HARD.

P.S. : The final boss theme was really cool. XD

:P It's "In Mors De Nihil" from the Nothing Battles music pack, if you're curious.

You probably missed
The hidden room in the library. There's a clue in the Dark Room with the armored guys that tells you a sequence that you'll need to use in the library.
Awesome game… have not played anything even remotely as interesting in a while… I finished with 100% but confused about the skeleton in the cell… is there a way to enter here?

Nope, there's no way in there. The skeleton is just there to bash his head against the wall. :P

Glad you had a great time with my game! :D

Version 1.1
Random thoughts this ones pretty negative includes spoilers

... ... ... fuck this game... ... ... i cant believe..your character... just...wow...

this game better end with the death or imprisonment of the main character...

so the entire plots pointless? your goal was to learn the truth and for some reason other members already knew???
why is it okay that they know but not you? this is retarded!

what a weird end. we don't know the fate of your character and i hate the main character and pretty much everyone in this entire world outside the one that went into the dungeon to support you >.>

the true end hmmm needs explanation...its obvious who that was just not why.

i was not aware there was a choice of leaving! 6 ending hmm :3
i liked endings 4 and 5 more they were justified and/or clear

General 2+ hours gameplay

plot-was good until the end (my enjoyment)
characters-screw the characters!
gameplay-pretty good!
ending-a mixture of angry and loss of words

for the most part this was a pleasant experience. tho there was battles there was not a lot of them and the enemies changed quickly so you were not killing the same thing over and over.
i loved the skill cool down system. not only could you always use the skills unlike when using the terrible tp but every skill you have is actually useful!
which is extremely rare.

the game play was straightforward and the options to control difficulty and such are a huge plus!
that's it to avoid spoilers!

Overall
this was a pretty entertaining play thru i recommend it
I just got done playing it! Once I began the game, I could not stop 'till I finished to the end. I went down Mercy's Path on difficulty, as I wanted to go through the story (will try other difficulties later).

I got 96% of the clues, I sadly could not find a way to free the headbanging skeleton. But anyway, I liked the combat system--I had regretted not choosing a higher difficulty level, as it definitely was fun. The music chosen was excellent, really giving a feel for the place. The story was deep and creepy, some of the old journals giving me chills down my spine and churning my stomach! I also hated how I had to murder Amelia in order to get down there. It may had been best not to had murdered her at all, since Alice had sealed herself in which even she could not escape.

Oveerall, wow! Wasn't sure if this could beat "Illusions of Loyalty", but man it did! It was also fun to play a main girl character, as many RPGs don't have that. I definitely look forward to more games in The Shackles of Varn! Consider me a fan ^.^

What? The wall that moves side to side? 0_o Really?! I've never had a problem...

Ok, details, please:
1) Is the music still playing.
2) Does it happen on the very first time you press the switch?
3) If not, then what position was the wall in when you pressed the switch?
