Might and Magic Tsuk

This is the third game that I was requested to play by the developer, Marrend, who originally created “Might and Magic Tsuk” for the “Golden Age of Gammak” event on RMN in which developers were asked to make a game in RPG Maker 2000 with a ton of old-school game clichés. I’m happy to say that “Might and Magic Tsuk” succeeded in that request. Before reading up on the details of the contest I immediately felt as if I was playing an old-school RPG game that just skipped right to all the good parts. For the record I played this game to completion in about 45 minutes.

-INITIAL THOUGHTS-

“Might and Magic Tsuk” showcases everything that makes an RPG an RPG game in under an hour. Rather than explaining some grand story about that gradually builds up a world and background, “Tsuk” strips it down to dialogue, dungeon, boss fight, and repeat; essentially the main parts of a RPG. What I like most about this game though is that even though it uses sarcasm and humor to showcase what always happens in RPG’s, it isn’t exaggerated to the point of absurdness. Overall this is a legit RPG game and not a game that makes fun of RPGs. There’s not much to say about this game actually, it does its job really well and I can’t really find anything I disliked about it.

-PRESENTATION-

I was entirely enthralled by the presentation in this game. The first thing to hit me was the music. It really did feel as if I was playing an old-school game and made me nostalgic for some time during my gameplay. I also loved the artwork for the characters and enemies. I’m not so familiar with RPG Maker 2000 RTP assets so I don’t know if any of the graphical assets were original or not but I liked them all the same. As for the story, or rather lack thereof, I found the situation to be quite familiar and I pretty much was able to guess what was going to happen next. The only thing I really disliked about the presentation was that whenever my character’s attack missed the dialogue would state that the enemy missed instead. This most likely an engine problem though and may or may not can be fixed. Other than that I had no other problems.

-ENGAGEMENT/GAMEPLAY-

Rather than the story itself, I found the dialogue within the story to be the primary source of engagement for me. That and trying to see how many clichés where embedded within the game. The battles could also be considered a prime source of engagement as the boss battles are really engaging for such a short game. As for the gameplay portion of “Might and Magic Tsuk”, the game covers the usual RPG Maker Default Battle System with an item shop that gets more items after you beat a boss. It does all of this well and again I’m afraid to say that I’m at a loss for words. This game pretty much encompasses the definition of what an RPG game is and it does it very well.

-OVERALL-

I say play it if you have some free time. The graphics and music are sure to give the player nostalgic feelings of playing old RPG games back in the day. Specifically play if you like RPGs, or games with nice but subtle humor. This game wraps up everything in a nice small bow, enjoy!

Sorry about not doing this clarification earlier, but, this game was entirely built with the RTP assets. Except for the teleport crystals, which were part of the so-called "RTP add-on" (It had a version number attached to it, but, I forget what it was) put together by... Don Miguel? Sorry, I don't know a heck of a lot about it, and it was ages ago when I got it!

*Edit: Oh yeah! Thanks for the... review?

*slowly realizes I now have games that can appear in the "Highly Rated" section in the frontpage!?*
