Take on the role of Larz from the peaceful town to the west of the Forest Temple, whom must investigate the numerous screams coming from the forest at the request of Mayor Dad. After oversleeping and finding Mayor Dad outside waiting for him, Larz is allowed past the guard at the exit to the town. Upon arriving at the Forest Temple he encounters a young woman named Aeva, a healer from Castleton who was sent to investigate reports of monsters roaming the area near the temple. After solving the mystery, the two return to the peaceful town west of the Forest Temple only to discover that it has been destroyed by soldiers from Castleton, and they find themselves caught up in a conspiracy involving a now-evil King Castleton and a shadowy figure somehow connected to him.

Last Quest IV: The Prequeling features the standard front-view battle system that is the core of most RPG Maker 2000 games, and an overworld map that was always so present in the games of my youth. The graphics are slightly updated using the RM 2003 RTP for chipsets, and some modified backgrounds and system graphics.

This project is for the Golden Game Mak contest, and as such revolves around cliches and tropes. Due to the nature of the game, it is much less serious than a traditional RPG Maker game, and should not be taken seriously story-wise. This game is very short, typically taking me about 25-30 minutes per playthrough during testing. If you encounter any game-breaking bugs, please let me know.

Version 1.02 Quick Fix

It was brought to my attention in a Let's Play video that a late-game skill did not function, and I missed the dialog for a few NPCs. These issues have been corrected. There are still balance issue related to easy grinding and underpowered bosses, but I likely won't fix these until after the contest, as they would require more hours of testing than I have time for between now and the end of the contest.

What happend to 3,2,1....?

I was just spoofing the Final Fantasy numbering conflict of the 90's, but if I end up entering more contests in the future I'll probably just run with it and do Star Wars numbering.

Thanks for taking the time to make a Let's Play of the game. I'm glad you did, since watching somebody else play through is a much better way to see the flaws and issues than half a dozen Play Tests. I definitely saw the balance issues after your grinding session, and saw a few NPCs whose dialog I skipped, and a few chests where the contents should be switched, as well as the issue with the skill Penetrator not activating correctly.

I figured a few people would grind for money and accounted for that, but once I saw that you were pushing end-game levels before even entering the cave I knew I was in for some trouble.
I found two bugs in the beginning of your game.
- The unmoving guard speaks in a neverending loop while the event with Major Dad.
It's difficult to leave the village.
- When re-entering the village the loop starts again and you can't enter your home.

After the temple the guard is finally dead...

The boss fight nearly freezes, but after waiting a moment, I could tipp again.

Oh and finding the same equipment in chests that you can buy earlier in the village or the town isn't really helpful (except for money and the last two chests).

Thanks for letting me know. I had inadvertently created the guard loop when adding extra dialog for some NPCs. I removed the guard's dialog, so he won't loop anything anymore.

I didn't notice anything out of place in the eventing and I didn't experience the issue myself in another Play Test but I'll check it out.

That's actually one of the cliches/tropes for the contest. Buying equipment just to find something equal to or better than in the next dungeon. I'll probably rebalance it after the contest is over.

The only thing in this game that's bonkers is CAVE_DOG.

Yes, this is something every freaking RPG does and it annoys the crap out of people, so of course, it MUST be apart of this event!
