This has been quite a year for PotF, hasn't it? I won't bore you with a lengthy reflection of what happened this year partly because it'd mostly be a self-indulgent ramble that I'm sure you don't want to listen to. Besides, I want to get right into the most exciting part of this blog: You can finally list to some of Prayer of the Faithless' original soundtrack!

This has been a long time coming, but I'd like finally officially welcome Eric Ramos to the PotF team! He'll be composing music for the game, and has been great to work with. He's done professional work in the past and is learning from pros in the video game industry, so the man knows his stuff!

We started off with settling on themes for the party members. Being a highly character-driven game, themes for the cast were a golden opportunity to reflect their personalities musically in addition visuals and dialogue. Take a moment to listen to the themes of Aeyr, Mia, and Amalie:

I'm really, really excited at how well these themes reflect their personalities. I love placing emphasis on characters in games, and having themes for each party member will accent their personalities and leave a much stronger impact on players than they would otherwise. I can't wait to release the next demo where all of these will be in the game!

Go follow Eric on Twitter and check out his Soundcloud for some examples of his past work.

As for general progress, Mia 1 is about 60% done. The levels have been laid out, the cutscenes have been written and just need editing, and the enemies have been designed. There's still a lot left to do, but I'm expecting to be finished with Mia 1 sometime this month. Then, it's one last round of polish for the whole game, then the next demo will be released! I don't have a date on when that will be, unfortunately, as there are a few things I want to add, but I'll let you all know when a date has been settled on!

Thanks for sticking with the game for so long! Looking forward to continue working on it in the coming year!

Yes! This is what I wanted for your game the most. A great original soundtrack. These are seriously great too. Congrats man!
... Wasn't there sound before? ... Oh, these are themes, like specifically made for the characters~! Nice!

Hey, congratulations! I wasn't aware that you'd already made so much progress in organising the production of the soundtrack. Amalie's theme sounds like it would have great effect during the eye-reveal scene in particular. Though I will have to say that Aeyr's theme starts a bit too abruptly in my opinion, like a reprise version of a longer song. For the less action-heavy scenes, I think it would be good to have another version that begins with some sinister buildup rather than jumping right into it with the rocking guitars.

I guess this all means that within the next few weeks, the next testing phase is going to start? I'm excited!

It'd be great if testing would start then, but I wouldn't clear your calendar just yet. I'll let testers know well in advance when I'm aiming to have a demo ready.

Appreciate the thoughts on Aeyr's theme! I'll send it to Eric and get his input.
I think Aery's works really well for when he transforms. Maybe have a variation theme for more normal scenes.
Reborn as Revenant reminds me of Ys music with its rock elements.
Disparity's Waltz sounds like it would fit well in the Final Fantasy X soundtrack.
Wishes of Passing hmm not sure sounds kinda like something from one of those horror indie games.
I tend not to describe music often so I'm sorry if that came across oddly. Anyway, I like the first two songs and the third one is alright.

All right, thanks! By the way, does this mean that every single song that was used in previous builds is going to be replaced eventually? I don't know if any of the music you used before was legal to use in commercial projects. If the entire soundtrack does end up getting changed, the differences in some scenes might take a bit of getting used to. Just the titlescreen/intro track alone...
Having music actually made for it will be much better me thinks, especially when the composer is good. See: songs above.

A few tracks will be replaced, but most of what you hear in the current build will remain. Every track in the current build is legal for use in commercial games, so no worries on that front. Don't worry, the title theme isn't going anywhere!

Now, though, we're aiming to take it a step further and use music to accent the game's story and mood in a way that wasn't possible before. I won't straight up explain why and ruin the whole thing, but this won't be custom music just for the sake of having custom music.
As great as the title theme is, I am a bit concerned about mixing tracks from different composers; it's usually very obvious when people do that, and can be jarring if the styles clash. It's not impossible to take that into account, though, and I'm sure your composer knows what he's doing.

Yeah, I get your concern, and we're going to make sure the new tracks fit nicely with the current ones. Eric's Soundcloud speaks for itself regarding his skill, so believe me when I say we're paying careful attention to that exact detail.
These sound very snazzy indeed. Great quality. I like Mia's theme in particular.
