Created in 5 Days for the Golden Age of Gam Mak Contest (although I didn't quite make the deadline), Bro Quest is a short comedic RPG that puts a modern twist on the "Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" trope.

While drinking cheap beer at a Renaissance Fair, over-privileged carefree bro C.J. tries on a suit of armor and finds himself transported to a fantasy realm. The locals interpret his sudden appearance as proof of an ancient prophecy and recruit our obtuse hero to protect the kingdom from evil forces. Seasoned, no-nonsense adventurer Duane is assigned to be his guide. Can C.J. help the real heroes fight off the kingdom's enemies? Or is he just completely useless?

Featuring:
-Weird bro-centric skills to confuse and annoy enemies!
-No random encounters!
-Awesome art by Makio-Kuta!
-Come on now. I only had 5 days to do this, there's no ATB system or anything crazy like that.

If you've got about a half-hour or so, I hope Bro Quest brings you some laughs and fun!

Update!

Sup BROS!

So I've had a few bug reports about missing assets that are causing the game to freak out a bit. For the Gam Mak contest, the game was supposed to work without having the RM2k RTP installed, so you had to make sure to export every RTP asset you used. Unfortunately, I missed a couple and it's easy to miss that since I have the RTP on my computer.

This version has the missing stuff and I also buffed the power of CJ's starting weapon to make him not quite as useless.

Alright bruhs, I gotta go eat some bacon and get ready for football season!

Bro, this blue lizard is kicking my butt. ;(

I like the battles though; just stuck on this one! It'll be interesting to see how other people take to CJ's fighting style. At least at the moment he's only good for support, and having tried that in a game before - people didn't really like it.

I've always been okay with it for the most part. Though the fact that CJ dies so easily is a bit of a kicker - rather than being support he spends a lot of time healing himself lol Which! Is in character, but might be pushing a bit too far.

Writing in this is silly and fun! I'm glad it's easy to recognize that CJ is unlikable and the narrative does -not- support his thoughts. Duane... is an incredibly patient man.
Don't worry bruh, I'll help you out! Skizz and the other lizards are water-element so they actually take more damage from Duane's lightning move than his spear move. Also, the Flash Flood attack is always on the fifth turn so if you defend right before you should survive the hit. He defends on the sixth turn, giving you some time to recover.

Yeah, there's a pretty strong strain of anti-intellectualism in America and you can see that in a lot of movies where the writers make excuses for guys being rude and ignorant just because it's "authentic" or some shit. You can even see that in something like Cars 2, where Lightning McQueen scolds Mater for acting like a jackass in public and the emotional arc of the rest of the movie is all about Mater's hurt fee-fees and that McQueen was actually a jerk for calling him out. Much eye-rolling ensued.
I found immense pleasure while playing this. I'd like to see it finished with all the bells and whistles that normally aren't allowed because of time constraints and the like. If you don't who will? Oh! And by the way the dragon didn't show up on screen when I was fighting him but the flame wisps were fine. All in all it was super groovey!

I was almost afraid you weren't going to upload this project after all. So I'm glad you did. As soon as I have a bit more time, I'll give it a try. Perhaps a review might be in order as well? I'm looking forward to it!

P.S.: The MotW playthrough will resume in a few days, I promise. Sorry for keeping you waiting for so long.
The contest ended only a couple days before I went on vacation, so that's mostly why I took so long to post it. I hope you'll enjoy it, it's much sillier than you may be used to from my stuff.

All right, so I started playing this, and it's indeed a very, very silly game. C.J. is such a moron, it makes my stomach hurt. (Also, that Game Over screen. Why did you do that...?)
The beginning is kind of slow with the battles being so hard and with little variation, but the gameplay gets more interesting as I progress. I just wish C.J.'s skills worked more reliably.

However, I encountered some bugs along the way, one of which is currently preventing me from continuing. First of all, the Flame Wisps' normal attack never seems to actually connect, it always gets evaded (which might also be a good thing, because otherwise some fights would be almost impossible). Also, the dragon has no battler graphic (See this screenshot)
Once I've returned to the castle and C.J. has said his line about there being zombies in everything cool, I get this error message and the game crashes. It's probably an error on my end, because other people seem to have finished the game without problems, but I don't know what to do about it.

As soon as I find a way to get past this issue, I'll continue playing.
Both of those bugs are a result of trying to export all the Rm2k RTP assets used in the game and missing a few. I'll have a new build uploaded sometime today and I might make a few other tiny adjustments too.
Weird issue: when I try to start the game, it tells me "rpg maker 2000 rtp is not installed" which makes no sense because not only do I already have the rtp, but it's supposed work without it anyways. I tried putting it in the rtp and vice versa, but still no dice. I'm on a windows 7 Professional-64 bit PC if that helps but I haven't had any trouble running rm2k games in over 4 years.

EDIT: As of 03/10/16, what issue son?! look a few posts down if you came here with a similar problem to me

Oh my, kalledemos is right, "2000 rtp not installed" :(
That is weird. I have Windows 7 and the 2k RTP too. But like you said, it's meant to work without it. It may be because it was made with the updated RM2k that was released on Steam earlier this year? (rather than the classic Don Miguel one) That's the only thing I can come up with.

How horrible of you Volrath, you live in Ct. where the story takes place but you choose to pick on Jersey ?? Don't they have a doofus in Ct. ? :)

OK, off to download again....
SUPER late but... I fixed it! I found out from lurking a bug report thread that if you open the game's RPG_RT.ini file add the the line "FullPackageFlag=1" without quotes, the game runs perfect! I ironically found this solution trying to fix a completely different bug for a completely different game.
