Hey sweet, front page feature

So I guess for the record, I AM planning to make a much more indepth game with this engine later on. Like I'm REALLY stymied that I built this engine and haven't yet done anything truly awesome with it.

Right now I'm really busy with something else that demands the entirety of my free time. But eventually somewhere down the line...

Anyways, that all for now.

Holy shit - a Neok a game! And it’s completed! :O

Aw… If it wasn’t the fact that I have two people who just recently requested me to review their games for them and if it wasn’t for my fiftieth review spectacular coming up right after that where I’m going to review something classic for it - then I would have reviewed this game! Shit!

…But I can always still play it and leave a comment for it, right?

It’s good to see your work again, bud.

can't make a bad game if you don't finish any games

You... You actually made it?

How? Why!?

By the way, if anything breaks while playing, please let me know before Friday so that I can unbreak them!

One day I will get that cultivated donuts review!

Well it's supposed to be able to be completed in one hour, so don't expect anything TOO epic. Actually in hindsight, I probably shouldn't have done such a heavy story. One hour is so not enough time for meaningful development. Oops.

Those are very good questions, and the answer to that is

*Runs away*
Upon seeing the first touch encounter I backed off to plan, and the game crashed with the following error:
Script 'Sprite_Character' line 190: NoMethodError occured.
undefined method 'x=' for nil:NilClass

Okay, I uploaded a new version that removes the exclamation bubbles enemies get when they detect you. I think that's what's causing problems. Could you give it a go and see if that fixes things?

I already restarted with the same version and couldn't reproduce the problem.

Overall a fun game. I was at level 10 when I finished, and had no trouble against any enemies except for the first boss. Despite exploring the whole map to get all skills I still was down to 10 hp when I beat it. I'm not sure if this means the first boss is too hard, or my strategy was just poorly suited for that one fight. I'll have to start a new game and try something different.

EDIT: After many attempts I managed to reproduce the issue once in the old version. A similar number of attempts failed to reproduce it in the new version. Not the best sample size. I do hope you can fix the issue, because I liked the exclamation bubbles.

As for the first boss, I think I only cut it so close because I was under-leveled (4). Still, when I restricted myself to the skills available without leaving the quadrant, I lost with 98 hp remaining on the boss (I was level 6). There isn't much room for variance in strategy with only 6 skills to choose from, so unless all players are expected to bypass the boss at first, I think it needs to be toned down a bit.
Damn your bosses are pissin' me off. :P
Okay, new version up

- Reduced difficulty of first three bosses
- Fixed a bug where losing to a boss wouldn't reset the battle type
- Added animation to and modified first boss's action

It's unlikely. I can't reproduce the error at all (though I've seen other people have the same problem), and I can't seem to figure out why it's happening. With the deadline this close, I'm probably best just leaving it.

Thanks for attempting to replicate it with the new version though. Those kinds of 'random occurring' bugs are the worst to troubleshoot.

Sort of supposed to skip, yes. The general idea is to go for a Dark Soul'ish sort of thing, where you need to go past it for now, and come back later on with better preparation. I've reduced the difficulty for it, but you'll probably still need to skip past it the first time around. I've mostly just changed things so that now you can beat it before getting the second key.

Thanks a lot for giving it a go!

get better at gaaaaaaaaaams
I went into this game and then the title screen looked at me, I already knew it was going to be good.
Usually I'm not a fan of front battle system but the way you made it with her standing there doing all the action, it actually got to me.
The map mechanics and the way you repelled the fog was pretty fun, it made me feel like the damn syndrome is cornering me (even had to sacrifice a level once)
The bosses each were pains in the butts. But not the bad kind. Those are the kind of fights I imagine when I see a boss fight.
Each of them required a specific strategy against them.
While the mapping itself wasn't a big deal for me, I know the tileset you worked with doesn't offer that much, but it still managed to make me feel into it.
The custom art blew my mind away. Don't know if the monsters were custom art, but the art of the characters were really pretty.
Though I didn't care for them that much as characters, the gameplay kept me going plenty.
The skill usage felt very fluid too, that's probably one of the reasons the game felt so good to play for me. (Even managed to grind a little, when normally i absolutely LOATHE it.)
I had a great time with this game. :)
Keep it up.

Always love me some Neok's games. <3 <3

Been playing for a while and it's quite enjoyable and I apologize for not being able to offer actual proper feedback other than, "quite enjoyable." XD

Awesome, glad to hear it did well for you. Same on the front battle system thing, usually I like to see the characters on screen. Makes it feel more... live, I think.

Yeah, the story is definitely the weak link here. One hour just isn't enough time for me to tell anything meaningful. I'm glad the gameplay makes up for it.

Thanks. No worries, it's a short game, so I realize there's probably not too much to go on.

Beta testers!? No, this game needs a goddamn exorcist!

I just finished this one (2 of the 3 endings. Couldn't find Ending 2) and yeah, this thing rocks. Presentation, art, story, setting, characters, difficulty and super badass boss music... it's a complete package.

I like the skill system and how it's more important to have a fluid attack flow than to just equip all the highest tier skills. Also, having the quarter-turned back of Ally (odd name LOL) in combat made me really nostalgic for some game I don't even remember and I really think more games should do that.

So yeah, totally a good one.

Awesome, thanks for playing it through! Yeah, I think most people will end up missing ending two. It's not an easy thing to find.

I don't know, I find that when I design characters, they sorta name themselves so to speak, and then it gets really tough for me to think of them by any other name.

Yeah, that's one of my gripes about most front turn based RPG combat systems (not seeing the characters). Just makes it feel a little less vivid and real.
Holy F-
This looks awesome
Can I make a playthrough of this?
Can I?
Can I??
I hope so, cause that would be awesome *0*
Sounds good to me :). Lemme know when it's up!

im interested in what kind of damages a game can do in reality :D
something like the special pokemon controversy?

amazing art!

i love the skill set for battles! :D every skill has a purpose!

99 save slots!?

hmm after you destroy all 3 rifts shouldn't the monsters stop respawning? they cant live without the gas after all

oh there were multiple endings? o.o i can guess how to get them :3

a shame we never got that talk but maybe its better this way :3

General 40M+
This game is amazing! it did everything right the only thing that could of been better was
creating a stronger bond with her sister. maybe a couple flashbacks to show there connection.it might make you care less about her or respect her more who knows.
there just was not enough for me to get attached to her character

i loved how the battles were set up! not only could we avoid the enemy if wanted but we could customize are style in a simple yet effective manner! even the special map we got was amazing! showing where the infection was, where we were, the doors and there colors and even make the lines disappear when it was unlocked!?

Overall
A must play! this game is just amazing!
Looks like I might have beaten Korokonee to the punch.

@shayoko
Awesome, glad to see you enjoyed it! Agree that the story could've used a lot more exposition/improvement. One hour is just too short to do anything with.

@thesacredlobo

Thanks for doing this. Sorry about that bug near the end, right before the final boss. Wasn't expecting people to come back that way.

@Korokonee
I'm still waiting on yours!
