The Dinosaur Festival

The Dinosaur Festival is a very short, child-friendly adventure game made in RPG Maker VX Ace. In fact, it's so short that this review is almost over!

You are cast in the role of Mamasaurus, a dinosaur who has premonitions of her town's sacred tree, under which all of the town's eggs hatch, will wither and die, and that only love can save it. When these premonitions come true, Mama must find a way to save the tree, as Mama's own egg is scheduled to hatch very soon!

The game is very simple and cute. The only thing tested is your ability to listen and follow directions. You play the game by talking to other dinosaurs and exploring your environment. If you talk to everyone you'll be pointed towards the game's solution very quickly, as the game can be solved in only a few minutes.

The focus of the game is on a sense of child-like whimsy and humor, and the cute graphics coupled with the extremely simple gameplay makes me think this would be an ideal game to play with your children. There are a few jokes thrown in for the adults, however.



The game suffers from a bit of 'first game syndrome.' Teleport events are awkward and the maps don't fit together quite as you'd expect. There's only a few maps in the game so this doesn't come up often, though.

Right now, this game feels more like a proof-of-concept than a full game. I found the lore of this world kind of interesting and I'd love for this concept to be explored in a larger game with more robust mechanics. This is also a game I feel is in dire need of some additional custom artwork. Going all on with the ultra-cuteness would probably be the best way to really make this game stand out.
