What is RPG Paper Maker?


RPG Paper Maker is a free game maker engine including a 3D universe with many 2D sprites and some simplified 3D objects. Pretty close to the RPG Maker series, RPG Paper Maker finally give a way to create RPGs in a totally 3D universe as easy as it is in 2D!



What type of game can you do with RPG Paper Maker?

The engine is mainly adapted to J-RPGs, but you can do any type of game with it such as A-RPGs, FPS, Tactical RPGs etc.









Is RPG Paper Maker free?

Yes, but only if your game is not commercial. It's a free software. However, any game made with the engine requires a license to be sold. Again, the price is not decided but low (~$30). So if you want to make games only for fun and for free, don't be affraid!

Options easy to reach for beginners :

- Many actions similar to the classical RPG Makers
- A 3D map editor with 2D sprites that can be easily customized/ripped by 2D graphic designers
- Simple 3D objects already available (with 2D textures editable)
- A graphic RTP pack to discover the engine
- A language manager : to allow the player to choose a language on the loading screen


Advanced options :

- For 3D pattern makers : you can export your own objects into the engine (.obj & .fbx)
- For programmers : scripting

Update 19: Event commands, conditions & switches

Hi there, this week I progressed a lot on events database.


Debug, debug, debug...


-Dialog preview zoom failed on changing image
-Drag & drop for lists: cannot be done beetween several lists
-Remake of list unselection


Event pages


The page buttons "Add", "Copy", "Paste" and "Delete" are perfectly working! The page system is exactly the same as RM series: the pages conditions' test are handled on the right to the left, and the first page with a true condition is the one displayed. Note that in the map editor, the page displayed is always the first one.


Event commands


I've done the same system than in the ruby version. To add a new command, you can simply double-click a window commands (RM system), and if you know what you are searching for you can type a keyword directly with an intelligent research. The bold command is the one selected, you can press enter or click on an option to add your command.





Here are the 3 pages commands. There will probably have some addings later.










Conditions


Each page has a conditions panel. This one allows you to regroup several conditions with "And" / "Or" keywords. However this doesn't cover all the conditions possibilities (this would become horrible to implement and to see).

The max number is 9999. I actually wonder if I should separate in several boxes as in original RM. I'm currently not doing it because I think it's not really necessary, and also because we could not drag and drop.

But the default CBS would be a classic RPG with a side view (without grids). Many customizations for HUD would be available too. :)

edit: please make sure to allow for rendering resolutions and etc.
I for one would be happy to be able to render the game in 320x240 or lower (and then properly scale it) which I feel it's the best for this kind of aesthetic.
Also, for higher resolutions, filtered rendering to avoid jaggy edges would also be nice (because the pixelated and obviously scaled up characters clash really heavily with the resolution)

Of course. You will be able to :
- Choose your own native resolution
- Allow/prevent players to change resolution or/and choose a full screen mode in a launcher
- Choose your own tile size (multiples of 8)

I'm sorry I don't understand this paragraph ! Are you talking about blur for huge sprites ? There actually is a filter to let the textures clear. For example, if I choose to play in my screen resolution and full-screen, this is perfectly clear !

Please let me know if you require any feature you trully wish in that kind of engine. I will try something if it's possible and helpful.

Why not ? You can put dark graphics, and there will be many possibilities with the camera display.

That's the principal strength of the engine : sprites always face to camera ! You can also see more use of 2D sprites on the video I posted.


Edit for mawk : I plan to do a Paper mario fan-game too with it... a childhood dream that have to be done ! I just found textures and sprites of Paper Mario 64 and I will do something with it ! :3
anti-aliasing options would probably be a benefit here, but this looks pretty neat! if someone decides to make a game like Paper Mario with this, that's basically all I could want.

Yes! Exactly what I meant :D That's awesome! Now I'm twice as hype! One last question, will it have a template system similar to rpg maker or will all the sprites be seperate?
Good question. I was thinking about that. In fact I did this at the begining to simplify images loading. But I think that I will work on this part to have something similar to rpg maker without slow down the game !

I can't estimate today. One or two months later I should be able to answer to your question because I started the editor's HUD recently. However, you can be sure that I will work on it everyday and after my classes !
