The entrance to the crystal caves. I think this is attempt number seven, but, I can't honestly remember.

Thanks! I think I'm finally semi-happy with how this map looks now.

I wouldn't feel too jealous if I were you, though. You have no idea just how absolutely hideous all of my other attempts at making this thing were.

Well, I tinkered around with the map a bit. I'm not sure if I got the shadow working right, but I think I got the upper right area looking a bit better, if nothing else.

Shadows are a bit of a dilemma because then it's like well why doesn't everything else in the world cast shadows? Obviously it's way too much work to manually light everything. Most JRPG art kind of just lights on a very vague definition to compromise on things. So idk the reasoning behind "this needs a shadow and nothing else"
It's a matter of common sense vs. gameplay sense. It might be impractical to shade everything, so shadows on only certain objects will help the player understand where they are in space. Sidewinder's edit does make it much more apparent that something is overhanging thereā€”that the player might want to explore up there.
The core issue is that light brown over dark brown isn't a great representation of elevated walk-able space. There are many different ways to address that other than shadows, just sayin.
I meant the thing under the door. It'd cast a shadow on the wall below and said shadow would help with the readability of that particular walkway because it looks a bit weird as it stands.

Very hatchety, but to give an idea what I mean. It makes it seem more like it's actually sticking out over the wall.

Oh, okay, I get it now. Derp.

Yeah, I'll be doing that for sure. It looks way better.
