Shadows are a bit of a dilemma because then it's like well why doesn't everything else in the world cast shadows? Obviously it's way too much work to manually light everything. Most JRPG art kind of just lights on a very vague definition to compromise on things. So idk the reasoning behind "this needs a shadow and nothing else"
It's a matter of common sense vs. gameplay sense. It might be impractical to shade everything, so shadows on only certain objects will help the player understand where they are in space. Sidewinder's edit does make it much more apparent that something is overhanging there—that the player might want to explore up there.
author=Liberty I meant the thing under the door. It'd cast a shadow on the wall below and said shadow would help with the readability of that particular walkway because it looks a bit weird as it stands.
Oh, okay, I get it now. Derp.
Yeah, I'll be doing that for sure. It looks way better.
