The only RPG I know of where your party consists of the Hero, The Villian and the Damsel in Distress.

Story

Brave Hero Yuusha is a RPG that plays like the old NES Dragon Quests with a slight twist on the story and game mechanics. You play as the typical hero, who, at the beginning of the game, goes to face-to-face with the Demonlord that is holding the lovely Damsel in Distress captive. But, a mysterious figure called The Puppeteer who is tired of the same ol' story of good vs evil decides to mix things up by changing the story to make things more interesting. The Demonlord's castle is slowly erased from existence and the Hero, Villian, and Damsel in Distress team up to find the puppeteer and restore the world to it's normal predictable state.

The tone of the game is very lighthearted and upbeat and never takes itself too seriously. Which makes the game a joy to play. The characters are not deep by any means and I could see the twist from a mile away. But, the writing is humorous and well written and the game managed to keep my attention for the 5 hours or so it took me to complete.

This guy collects slime....I mean moon medals. :-)

Gameplay

During most of the game you are traveling from town to town, restoring lost townsfolk or landmarks that have been erased from existence by finding lost pages of the book in dungeons, from NPCs, or by beating bosses. It is an interesting mechanic and is implemented fairly well. The dungeons are varied and I really liked all of the slight puzzle elements involved in each of them to collect the different pages. There are also different moon medals scattered throughout the world to collect and trade to the moon king to get some really good items.

Battles are traditional turn based fare similar to the Dragon Quest games on the NES. You have the fighter, the battlemage, and the healer/warlock. Each of the characters have a good amount of skills and are all useful in battle in their own way. But, if there is one flaw I found about this game it is that IMO the battles are WAAAAYYYY too easy. I never died once or even really got close to dying throughout my entire playthrough and plowed through bosses without much strategy needed. All the characters have a lot of skills that could of been used for some very strategic boss battles. But, since the bosses went down so easy most of the moves were not really needed at all.

Graphics and Music

Wow! Great Job. I absolutely loved the graphics and music of this game. I believe that everything is custom made and the game looks and sounds just like a good NES RPG. The battle music and some of the dungeon themes are still stuck in my head a couple of days after finishing the game which is always a good sign. My favorite part of the game is all the different enemy designs though. They emulate some classic Dragon Quest style enemies, but with your own sense of style and humor that really comes out to make your game that much more enjoyable.

I love the custom battle sprites!!

Pros

Custom 8-Bit Graphics
Great Soundtrack
Decent Length(About 5 Hours)
Interesting Premise
Good Writing
Doesn't take itself too seriously

Cons

Way to easy
Not much strategy in the battles
Encounter rate might be a tad too high

Overall

Brave Hero Yuusha is a really solid RPG maker game. Not amazing, but, incredibly solid with a very high level of polish. Everything about the game comes together to make it a very enjoyable experience. Do yourself a favor and at least download and give the game a try. Especially if you really enjoy old school NES RPGs.

Also loved the heck out of Mario RPG. There is indeed something very satisfying about having the villain and the person who's usually rescued as active, contributing members of the party. :DDDDDDD
