Everyone knows the story of Final Fantasy IV by now. Yet, I've always wondered what if things had gone a different way? What if, say, Rydia had never joined your party? Or Kain had stayed with you after the incident in Mist? These questions and more are what this game explores, and tries to give a definitive answer to.

This is not a scene-by-scene remake, but rather a re-imagining of what I think a "parallel dimension" Final Fantasy IV would have played like. For the graphics, I took a lot of inspiration from the PSP remake, though I did try to up the quality of the graphics at least a little bit (especially using Celianna's tilesets which are amazing). Most of the tracks from the original game have been replaced with remastered/remixed tracks from all over the internet, such as OCRemix, the DS version, Dissidia, and many Youtube artists.

I'd like to note here that I went for a blending of several prior versions of the game in terms of the actual 'feel' of the game. Such as the title screen, I went for the classic U.S. release on SNES and just upped the graphics as much as I could. Other areas will have more of a SNES feel while others will reference the PSP and even DS versions at times. The maps themselves are similar to, but not exact, replicas of the original maps from the SNES version. Dialogue is going to be a mix of the Gameboy Advance translation with original story by me.

Lastly, a huge shutout and thank you to the dev of Legend of Balance. Your game was an inspiration and tremendous guide for me, and it's awesome.

IMPORTANT - If you come up with an error stating that you are missing the xinput1_3.dll then you will need the following (safe download from Microsoft's site) DirectX Jun2010

**Do NOT enter the Moon's caves post-game or else you will glitch your game!**

Reverted the build to a previous one (in which there were no significant issues save for the lag on the Overworld). My apologies for the inconvenience, but it seems that trying to fix the lag present only caused more issues.

Features:

- Random Encounter Radar System
- You may go to fullscreen by pressing ALT + Enter
- Battle Rows similar to the original game
- Classic side-view Final Fantasy-type battle system (Modified Journey Battle System)
- New cut-scenes and dialogue depicting an alternate version of events from the original story
- 15 to 30 hours of gameplay
- Battle Difficulty options
- Enemy HP Bars (they're visible when an attack is made)
- D-Pad functionality on Gamepads
- New "Lunar Expanse" bonus area (Boss rush dungeon)
- New "hidden" Arena

Special Controls:

To enter Lunar Whale's control room:
Keyboard - Q key
Gamepad - L button

Lag Killer & New Download

Hi peoples!

Got a pretty big update, and it's that I think I somewhat killed the L-A-G present on the Overworld (especially in late game). I've also fixed up a few passabilities in some areas, and I believe I fixed the whole post-game bug-whenever-entering-moon-caves-thingie. I've posted a new download for the game with these new updates (Google Drive) so I hope you'll take advantage. Oh, and you'll want to start a new save for the game after downloading this updated version. Old saves will work, but they'll be all wonky when going back and forth between Overworld and towns/dungeons.

Here's hoping the game performs better, and thank you all for your support! =)

Same exact thing happened in the version I have actually. I really wanted to check and see if there was a secret at the underground throne, but I couldn't be bothered going through the waterway so I didn't bother.

As things stand on my end, I gave up on AAA rank until I can get some items from the moon dungeon. Also curious if the elusive flan princess will make a showing. No tails in this version but he could of always gave em something else, so I'm on the lookout for that. From what I can tell though the flan princess isn't in, unless it's room specific like the original.

Also agree with you on what you said about the ff's earlier. I try to include 12 because its not terrible, but it is by no means the same quality as 10. The mmo's didn't even occur to me because I mentally block out their existence. I try to do the same with 13 but I haven't succeeded yet.

If you try to exit lunar core B8, it teleports you to the exact same place (lunar core b8).

Also is it even possible to get to the sealed weapon on b5 of the dungeon? I've been all over these floors and can't find a path. Edit: nvm found it.

Edit Beat AAA rank and it was by no means easy. From what I can tell you need the ribbon on your healer, and a crystal armor on someone else who will be your designated item user to toss ethers and the occasional phoenix down if your unlucky enough to have your healer hit by fist. Also having everyone at level 60 helps. I'm pretty sure that lass enemy is impossible without at least the item requirements I mentioned above.

Still haven't managed finding pink flans so mayby you didn't add those like I thought. There are no tails, no mithril town, and the secret that replaced the tail is different, so It's not unreasonable to assume you didn't add in the special flans. Let me know if I'm wrong though because I've looked everywhere on the moon. I even went into small rooms and waited for enemy encounters to get close enough to engage me.

Also seems if I talk to the girl in the troia castle infirmary the game just freezes. if I talk to her from the top or right, cecil backs up, and she gets up to walk off the bed, but isn't able to. If you talk to her from the left cecil can't even back up.

Thanks for quick solution, I'll try it ASAP.
Also one question: you don't mind if I make a walkthrough of your game on Youtube (with link here, of cource)?
No problem, and I'd love to see a walkthrough of the game on Youtube! =D Once you've got it up on there, I'll give it a category up above so peoples can see it when they see the page.
Tested, now works fine, thanks! I'll begin walkthrough tomorrow.
Awesome! Oh, and be sure to grab the latest Data Patch as well. It has a better balance for the ATB gauges, and all the fixes to go with them.

Started my walkthrough, all works fine for now. By the way, really like that minimap, allowing pass around monsters. Even random encounters are good feature of "oldschool FFs", sometimes they are very often so begin bothering player.
@Sphere

I beat Rank AAA in the arena on Ultra difficulty!!!

My level was mid 60s. That guy is my favorite boss on my favorite RPG by Square. I would've loved to have fought him on foot too. A 4 on 4 vs Grahf, Id, Ramsus, and Miang would be a dream come true!

I also ran into the Troia Castle bug too. I have my doubts about ever getting to see what happens with that situation due to the older version I'm using.

Thanks! Although I don't mind random encounters, I do like when we have some sort of advance notice, or if we're able to get around them if we're down low on health.

Congratulations! That is a TOUGH thing to do on Ultra difficulty! =D As for the Troia Castle bug with that particular character in the infirmary, it has been fixed in the latest version but yeah, with your older version VX Ace screwed you on that. My apologies about that, I hated it when that happened to me with another game awhile back.

Since I've done what was required to trigger that scene, can you at least PM me with what happens?

Another thing too:

Will I have an issue accessing the bonus dungeon due to the Lunar Core B8 bug? As it stands, once I go there, I can't leave. An Exit spell would've been greatly appreciated over the course of this game.
I think it would be fine with her posting it in spoilers since I don't know what happens either. I also agree that an exit spell would of helped a ton. I lucked out because I hadn't saved in the core before I found the bug.

I really should finish up the final dungeon soon myself and then move on to the bonus dungeon. Far as my idea goes on the enemy I couldn't find, at this point I'm willing to write it off as non-existent. I made sure to get into one battle in every room (minus the core but I don't think it'd be down there). Either it doesn't exist, or it is in the bonus dungeon (which does make sense to me), so I'll look for it there.

Far as that last arena enemy goes, I loved xenogears as well so that was nice. It's a shame it never got a remake to fix that second disc, but considering the way game companies have gone I'd rather they not now. Considering how much I love the game, that tells you a lot on how much I trust modern day gaming companies.

Only reason I believe the flans exist is the moon dungeon contains everything else in the original, so I just can't see her leaving those out. Actually...just occurred to me there is no hidden super bosses like shinryuu either, so I'm not even sure why I was obssessed with an enemy that isn't even guaranteed to exist.

This is what happens:

She awakens, and after discussing with Cecil that she doesn't remember much and sees him as someone good, she gives him an item called Materia. That item has only one use, and that's to teach those who wield black magic the Ultima spell. Most destructive spell in the game.

As far as the bonus dungeon and how to unlock it, all you gotta do is beat the game normally. It's an automatic post-game dungeon. So that bug you guys got in your versions won't interfere with that. I feel as you do to an extent about Xenogears, what I'd like to see would be an HD Remaster of the game, and them possibly fixing up the second disc to have more gameplay the way it should've been. Xenogears is another game I'd love to do a riff off of, but I'd have to redo all the sprites from scratch and all the enemies, and that'd be too much for any one lone dev like me. lol

I'll confirm that they ARE in the game, and they are on the moon. They are in specific areas of the final dungeon, and they are rare encounters with very, very nice drops.
They are in then...which means I just wasn't lucky enough to encounter one. I checked every single room in the last dungeon with no success. I'm going to have to go hunting again in the final dungeon before I do the post-game dungeon. The completionist in me doesn't want to leave anything behind. I'm fairly sure the only thing I missed was that spell, but since that was due to a bug I can't really count that.

Edit hmm...I keep hunting in what I believe the most likely area to contain then, but no luck. I've been hunting on b5 in that tiny room with a chest in the right.

I just finished up the last dungeon so I could see the ending, and that was nicely done. I liked overall what you did with the characters.
Dead characters actually staying dead, rydia, a little girl, not overcoming her hatred in the span of 5 mins, and golbez choosing to overcome his mistakes after being freed from control. If I had one complaint it'd be you get to use many characters for very little time to see what they can really do, but that's a small thing. No frying pan scene with yang either.

I wonder what a ff4 the after years - alter destiny would be like. So many projects, so little time.

Glad to hear you enjoyed the game! =) I've been toying with the idea of a sequel, but if I were to do that it'd be awhile from now. I'm going to try my hand at a classic FF turn-based rendition of Final Fantasy Tactics. If that doesn't pan out the way I'd like, then I'm going to do an alternate version of FF X, which is more likely to happen.
Sounds interesting. I don't blame you for holding off on a sequel when their are more interesting games out there. Would be interesting if you set it up to where the characters you normally don't see much of joined you. Gafgarion/delita/that squire in chapter 1 (I always forget his name) who joins at first but is gone later due to reason, come to mind. If it doesn't work out then ff10 would be just an interesting. I'm sure you have your own ideas though and if you can make the game work then it'd be interesting to play. From what I can tell you are good at drawing out a characters true character in a way that makes sense.

As far as the flans go, are they at least designated to a full room? Several hours later of roaming around small chest rooms and I still haven't encountered one. I think it's fine as long as they are set to a particular room even with a low encounter rate as long as people know of their existence (people would never discover these by chance if I haven't found one by now). However if they aren't set to at least a full room, then a lot of encounters I've gotten in would of been a waste. The best place that makes sense to have them is a small chest room (two of these, one on b4 and one on b5). I've roamed around both of these (as well as a few other areas just in case) for hours and not one flan which is kind of ridiculous. It has me questioning just how you have them set. It could just be terrible luck on my part, but I want to make sure that it's something a player could reasonably discover like the other secrets.

Overall though It's my own determination to hunt them, and if you want to keep the details secret then that's up to you. As a completionist I need at least one from them before I move on to the bonus dungeon. I'm not crazy enough to farm multiple of whatever it drops considering I haven't found a flan in hours (days even if you count the fact I searched yesterday too), but I'm not giving up until I get at least one of the item.

I';e greatly enjoyed the game though minus the few bugs I ran into, and I hope to give my opinion on the bonus dungeon soon.

Heh that's not Cid, just a monk NPC. Yes, you need to go outside the Castle and head for the ship moored at the dock to the east. Apparently that unresponsive monk got by everyone, so I'll have to make a little fix there.

Glad to hear you've enjoyed the game! I look forward to seeing what you think of the bonus dungeon. =)

As for the flans...
Go to B6 of the Lunar Subterrane, southern part of it (as if you were heading to get the Ragnarok). There's a section of four tiles to the north of where you enter that you'll want to wait there and get into battles. More specifically, the area is just below the invisible bridge when you're going for the Ragnarok. There are about half a dozen other areas as well, but that's the easiest to go for.

Ohh i forget to rest. Thanks for fast answers and a really great game.

No problem, and glad you're enjoying it!
These flans are crazy lol. I really don't think anyone would of discovered them without you mentioning that spot. The spot itself is really obscure, and it took me 132 battles to encounter a single flan (I counted), and then I didn't even get a drop so it must not be guaranteed. Gonna be fun trying to get that single drop I need lol.

Thanks for the help though, and when I'm done here I'll head to the bonus dungeon and give my comments on it.

Also was there a monk like that? I thought I talked to them all. Oh well lol.

Edit: Just exited the dungeon temporarily to stock up at chameleonway cave but when I got to where the lunar whale was supposed to be parked it has completely disappeared...

Edit 2: Since I'm stuck on the moon anyways now (guessing the lunar whale disappearing had something to do with a bug with me entering the final dungeon again post-game), I decided to check the core to see if anything would happen that would let me escape.

Right when you enter b12, it starts replaying the last scenes, except it starts at fusoya about to battle zeromus, and your character passes out at the entrance so the layout is all wrong, still I'm going through with this on the off chance I might be able to access the post game from the beginning again.

Heh, used a bug to escape a bug, that works. I just tested when the lunar whale disappears in the post game, and it is as soon as you enter the first lunar passage. Look's like I'll have to use the bug to escape a 3rd time after I restock and get my item from the flans.

Hopefully none of my findings are in the latest version, but posting them just in case.

Edit: Just a thought on the flans. From what I can tell right now it'd be impossible to find them by in game means (there are so few tiles and the encounter rate is so low I never even came across them by chance). What you could do to remedy that a bit is to add in subtle hints on where you are supposed to go in order to hunt them. Mayby just add in a npc or two that says something like: I heard the flan princess on the moon is gorgeous (this could be a guy on earth), and then a chameleonway could allude to some coordinates or something.

If you ever need any help with testing/ideas for the next game you work on, I'm willing to help out. I've enjoyed this one thoroughly enough, but as someone who knows ff well I can think of a few things you could of added that you chose not to.
@Sphere

I went ahead and went through the final dungeon, beat the boss, and saw the ending (which was very nice BTW).

I'm now in the midst of the bonus dungeon:

I had a pretty easy time up until Sephiroth. Supernova is evil! Ultimecia was even worse! I cruised through the next 3 with ease until I met Airy. I don't know which game she's from, but she is a genuine nightmare! I'm running low on X-Potions and that "Slaughter" technique isn't helping. BTW, is there anyway to exit out and restock on items? I can walk back as far as Sephiroth's room, but Cecil won't jump anymore.

I'm having a blast right now and the bonus dungeon is everything I wanted and more so far, regarding challenge. Great job on making things interesting!

Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying that bonus dungeon! It's one of my personal favorite areas in the whole game. =)

Yeah from the 7th Floor onward it's supposed to be a point of no return. I did that to show the fact that you can exit the tower all the way up to the 6th floor (FF VI), but once you get to the 7th Floor (FF VII) you're moving into a totally different domain (3D "world" lol) and can't go back. If you've got a save before the 7th floor, exit out of the tower and restock your X-Potions (get 99 of them). That way you'll be all set for 7th floor onward.
Done. It took awhile to get that flan armor and you were right about it being nice. One thing I did notice in the bonus dungeon is that the armor didn't block petrification despite the claim that it protects against all ailments. Was a tad annoying since I had it on my mage which was my primary damage dealer.

I got most of the references myself (airy is from bravely default, great game to try if you get the chance). I didn't find it particular difficult though as long as I hasted my healer and kept using holy with the occasionally curajas when they let out a big attack. Out of all the enemies I fought in the final dungeon I think I knew all but two or three of the monsters (emperor, cloud of darkness, tanzra, high seraph ultima). It's possible I know some of those and have just forgotten them over time though. Emperor in particular is a rather generic name which may be why it's not hitting me, while high seraph ultima sounds like a ff boss so I feel like I should know it.
