With the reboot of RPG Maker 2003 on Steam, I thought I'd dust up an old favorite of mine made a decade ago in my youth, Deus Cards. This game was originally made with RM2K and won't run on most systems nowadays. I think some people might still find this enjoyable so I upgraded it using the new RM2K3. I updated some graphics, music, code, and dialogue, but this is mostly the original game.

This is a CCG (as in Collectible Card Game) and RPG hybrid. You collect robots known as Avatars as well as cards used to control them to compete in a worldwide card tournament. This game was originally inspired by the anime 'Angelic Layer' by CLAMP. It's an anime about a girl playing a battle game using mini robots on a machine called the Layer. A popular game that shares similar concepts is Capcom's Megaman Battle Network.

Looking back, this game has some gameplay issues and display limitations. Some things could be done better, but the core concept is sound. So this is definitely a game that I am thinking of completely remaking when MV comes out. It will have more options such as custom player creation, avatar modifications, and the story of Gus and Jacob will be completed. Also the AI and display will be much improved due to the more powerful scripting engine that will be available.

Still, imho this version is still quite fun and is a complete game that you can beat. :D

STORY
In the near future, two scientists Sidney Terrail and Kalman Svabo invents the psi-conductor, a material that allows people to operate computer systems by thought. With bankruptcy threatening their company, they made a psi-circuit laced card game combined with mini robots called Deus Cards, hoping it would tide them over till more "serious" business appears. To their surprise, the game is a hit and soon evolves into a worldwide phenomenon with competitions rivaling that of the Olympics.

It's now 5 years later. A twist of fate introduces newbie player Gus Hunter and his best friend Jacob O'Neal onto the world stage of Deus Cards. Thus begins a tale of friendship, adventure, and awesome card battles!

FEATURES
  • A unique action collectible card game!

  • More than 80 cards to collect and infinite combos!

  • 10 unique Deus players and 20 unique Avatars.

  • Multi-tiered tournament system.

  • Follow the story of Gus and Jacob as they begin their card journey!

Oops. Thanks for the reminder. I'll look into it.
Surprised to see this game on here after all these years, and it definitely needs more exposure.

This game had soo much potential, and it's always been saddening that it was never updated. It's ridiculous how advanced the battle system was for its time. Hell, I was going to make my own VXA game based on Deus Cards, and even that wasn't going to be as complex as Deus Cards.

I'd super hyped for an MV remake from you, and I really hope you decide to make it!

btw, do you remember the source of the town theme, hanapari.mid? it's been killing me since forever.

Yay! Someone from back in the day! Thank you for remembering this game. Yes, the MV remake is definitely a go, but it may take a while this time around as it will go commercial. What that means is that all the art must be original and legal for commercial purposes, i.e. all the cards will have to be redrawn. I may need to do a Kickstarter to fund this.

I THINK it's from the anime Sakura Taisen...but it's been so long I am not too certain. :D
i heavily dislike the game. You have 0 chance to even see what your cards do, or save before that long ass intro, before you get thrown into a battle, and if you try to decide while cards are neutral to see what they do, you start getting your ass kicked, because apparently that counts as an action I just looked to see what my first card did (not even playing anything, and then i lose 1/3rd of my life in a single blow

I just gave you a follow on twitter. I haven't played this game in forever! I remember being confused as hell about the battle system but the characters and cutscenes were all really charming. I'm glad to see this here, though. I'll have to give it another play.

Thanks for the interest! There's something wrong with our site right now but we're fixing it. The game will be back up soon.
I'm interested in trying this out.. is the download link gone or is it that I just can't see it because I'm using my phone right now? lol

@Fayte Thanks for the interest! The site is back up. Sorry haven't logged on in a while. On RPG Maker hiatus for a bit.

@Kloe Thanks! It does have its flaws. I really want to remake it sometime, but busy, busy, busy...
