In this horror exploration game, a lost soul wakes up in a snowy wasteland with no memory, and only a talking scarecrow pointing them in the direction of a nearby castle. Little light enters its stony walls, where rooms don't stay put and inhuman creatures wander the halls. But this soul is not alone, and should you find the seven journals left by the one who came before, you might just escape the Hinterland.

This game features multiple endings and does not hold your hand. Explore, investigate everything. The world changes depending on your actions, and the answers aren't always clear the first time you try something. Those who search deeper are likely to be rewarded.

Press escape or X to bring up the menu, then choose "Save".

If there's an active monster in the room you can't save; I had some problems happen when I saved and then got got and loaded the file back up, so I just disable saving while monsters are present. Should work all other times though.

Hey, thanks for trying my game! I got some good feedback from watching this.

I've been talked to about the maps being too large and too empty before, and it's something I'm actively working on (hoping to finish in the next few days, actually). I'm also looking into making a few of the encounters less text-based (for what it's worth, it's only like that at the start--you didn't get to any of my animations or parallax mapping or more complex encounters, I promise there's some really cool, not-lazy things going on in this game, lol).

The only thing I can really disagree with is that you have to "re-play the entire game" after getting caught that first time. You played what would usually be the first five minutes of the game, just the part that establishes the "rules" (not that I'm complaining; you were pausing to give me advice). It normally doesn't take a half hour to get to that point (and thus you're only re-playing the first few rooms, and even then, things change when you get back inside--after that first time, all of the random encounters are turned on, and there are no more forced trips outside).

A few of the things you commented on are the way they are for reasons that unfold as part of the story, but are valid criticism all the same; I can do a better job of presenting them, and I've already got a few ideas of how to do it, thanks to watching people play it.

So again, thanks for giving it a shot and for giving me some useful critique. I'm working on what I'm calling version 2.0, and I hope you'll give it another shot once it's finished, because I'll hopefully have created something that'll knock your socks off! Or at least be a little more engaging or effective in their presentation :P

Also, apologies if I seem defensive--I really do appreciate the feedback and I am taking it to heart. I just am also a little bummed you stopped where you did, because it was right before things really take off. But that's another lesson for me to learn: first impressions can be everything, so my beginnings really need to shine.

Thanks again!
I like the paintings and artworks in the game. I'm happy to deal with the scarecrows, they make me feel that I'm not totally alone... I also read the walkthrough (I'm happy they included that, because I'm not really good at games, and walkthroughs make one feel safe) and I feel happy that the way it is phrased makes you feel like the author is really communicating with you, and some phrases make me laugh. But... a minor spoiler...the message... that... about the monster... that was scary. I researched. It's a nice story( the game, not the thing about the ... creepy message...but there are parts I don't understand much about the story of the game.
the end... the good end... really has promise, doesn't it? I guess what's left is to hope. And there! It's really nice! I love the ending.
Yeah i love the ending too, not sure if it's really the best ending though but i got the same one as Sans.
overall the game is really good! of course it's not like THE masterpiece of the century but i can't think of any major flaws of this game, and i'm surprised at the creativity of the content in this game, like the different types of monster designs and stuff. the rope shortcut at the end really helped.
i really do recommend this game to everyone who has time, it's not anything groundbreaking but it's a nice short story.

hey, can someone help me out? what's the use of various objects like dust pan that i haven't used through the whole game? there must be a secret somewehre....hints?

Game's dev here. Thanks for playing my game!

There are a few items that are non-key items. They don't do much, besides a random event here and there that's just for fun. But their main purpose? Well, I won't say too much, but you should definitely try throwing them in the Fountain ;D
Hey, I just wanted to say that I finished this game and thought it was really neat, but I did encounter a few bugs and oversights along the way so I'll list them here:

1) You can walk on the moss tiles on the wall in the basement.
2) You can get unlimited copies of Journal 6.
3) You can run into a game-crashing scripting error after leaving the maze game. It seems to be related to the XS Stamina System and looks to be the same error regardless of if you win or lose. Making sure my stamina was at 100% before starting up the game allowed me to avoid the error.
4) Interacting with the alarm after turning it off gives you the same dialogue asking if you want to turn it off, which is a bit odd.
5) You can find a box of crayons in a desk and the game seems to imply that you take them, but they don't show up in the inventory.
