Name: Lost in Fantasy: Reverence

Developer: MasqueradeJacker

Story: Beasts are overrunning the world, and you are on a quest to stop them. There's really not a whole lot to this.

Writing: Sometimes you play a game or read a book, and you just have to ask...why? The developer has a fair collection of knock knock jokes. I can't say the writing is good or bad, but I can say it's strange. Not quirky strange, not clever strange: just the kind of strange that makes you go "what?" Again, there's not a lot to it, and there's not a lot to say about it. The game is deliberately trying to be funny, and different people are going to react different ways to that. There are probably better ways to go about doing comedy. I will tell you that I don't like the main character and maybe that's a matter of personal preference. From the start, he rubs me the wrong way. In an effort to be funny, he comes across as annoying and self-center. I'm not grading the game based on this. I'm simply being a reviewer telling the developer what it was that turned me off of this game.

Gameplay: No. Just no. Random encounters every 3 to 5 steps. A poorly reasoned timed attack system. Puzzles that you solve by dying over and over again. This game is a perfect example of what not to do when making an RPG. Let's look at the stupidly high encounter rate. It's the video game equivalent of an obnoxious, spoiled brat sitting in the back seat saying, "Are we there yet are we there yet are there yet..." ad infinitum. Nobody enjoys being interrupted by these stupid encounters every two seconds. It's not bad programming, or inexperienced development: the only way that could be true is if the developer was truly an idiot, and he's clearly not. It's just a jerk move. Then there's the timed attacks. When attacking, you need to press A at just the right time, and when defending, you have to press D at just the right time. The thing is, I have found absolutely no timing for either button press to work. Wherever the red circle ends up, it either fails or it doesn't. It seems to be completely random. Terribly implemented. Then there's the insta-death puzzles that give you no indicators of how to escape and seemingly no way to know where to go. This almost feels like a troll game, where the dev is deliberately gamers a lousy game to mess with them. Seriously, absolutely everything about this game seems designed to piss me off, and it's working.

Blaze channels his inner Wile E. Coyote. I think this is where I started getting really fed up with this game.

Graphics: RTP, very nicely used. I've got no real complaints here except his main characters are made with VX Ace's awful character generator. Well organized maps, a little bit of empty space, but not too bad. Overall, the dev is really a very good mapper.

Music: A few non-RTP pieces, but still mostly RTP. The first battle between Drake and the Beast absolutely blasts my eardrums. Other than that, it's fine.

Conclusion: I notice some people seem to be able to put up with the terrible combat and encounters system. I can't and I simply cannot recommend this. There's a few interesting ideas going on here, but your time is better spent on a game that doesn't waste your time with a broken battle engine and an outrageous encounter rate.

I wouldn't call this a review, but rather a first impression. I highly appreciate taking your time to play this and telling me your thoughts, I do like hearing criticism.
I will take these three main factors, the 'insta-death puzzle', '3 to 5 steps encounters' and the 'timed hits' into consideration. Other than that, if anyone is reading this, enjoy the rest of the game that's yet to be played for the story.

First impressions are actually a part of reviews, including overall impressions, presentation, everything going into whether you game is enjoyable or not.

It's highly possible for someone, even professional reviewers, to stop at a certain point when a game is so unenjoyable/unplayable that it feels like a waste of your time to play it.

So, try to get out of the mindset that reviews need to cover everything. I'm sorry if I sound needlessly harsh to you, but it's a common misconception here that really annoys me.

I thank you for telling me about this, I'll apply these experiences to my knowledge so I can make better decisions in the future.
