Flavoured rock paper scissors

Title: Rock the World
Engine: RPG Maker MV
Author: mjshi
Status: Completed
Runtime: ~10min

Rock the World is an RPG Maker MV rock-paper-scissors-fueled combat system prototype, tiny in scope due to time constraints (the game was made in a week for the MVLYMPICS GAMMAK EVENT), limited in strategic potential due to its arbitrariness, and minimal in mechanical complexity. This cocktail results in an undercooked proof of concept forgivable due to charm and lack of ambition, albeit unsatisfying and conceptually simplistic.

Choose one of 4 default heroes to participate in a tournament of combat with 4 opponents. Each hero has their strengths and weaknesses. Between each fight, choose 1 upgrade for your character, whether it be to boost HP, ATK, regen, Tie Damage, and MP, or to learn 1 of 2 skills. Apart from building your character - which is admittedly quite fun - and choosing 1 of 2 skills in the battle menu, there is no strategy to this game. That is probably its biggest downfall.

A king stands on top of a stone pillar and tells you how to play. The king's dialogue is pretty funny. The tournament diagram is fine except for an ugly "qualifiers" scrawled like it was done in paint. This effect could have been more subtle, like putting a letter in each of the little boxes to spell the word "qualifiers", and centering it or something. Anything but drawing it loosely. On the upside, the diagram itself is cool looking, but I didn't see the optical illusion that it suggests is there.

The fact that I'm pointing out such a small detail further amplifies that there isn't much to this game. It is a neat little diversion, although its reliance on a completely random and arbitrary battle system makes it not as fun as it could be. The presentation and maps are decent. It goes without saying that this game would have been a lot less tedious if it were something a bit more strategic than rock-paper-scissors.

I won't assign a rating this game because, despite it being small and inconsequential, I didn't feel like it was a waste of my time, and I enjoyed it for the most part, even though I feel like there wasn't much meat on the bone to begin with. Play this game if you want a quick coffee break and want something interesting as a diversion.

I had hoped to make Rock Paper Scissors more strategic through the building of your character xD Since the battles are nearly pure random chance, it is the choices that you make outside of battle that tip the scales in your favor.

As for the optical illusion, the effect is best seen when your eyes are at least a foot away from your screen, mimicking this illusion. The 'grey spots' appear mainly at the intersections. If you're still interested in seeing this, here is a link to the tournament bracket for your convenience.

Time constraints definitely impacted the quality of the game, though I'm not sure how I could have added more, per se, elements of strategy to rock-paper-scissors.

That said, any feedback is welcome. Thanks for playing and reviewing!

Yeah. I think the inherent flaw was that you can't really make an almost completely luck-based battle system interesting without introducing a bit of, well, strategy. But that decreases the luck, which was kind of the point of having rock, paper, scissors in the first place, right? Unless you spiced it up with a few extra skills... gave the player a bit of agency.

No prob. It was a short and fun kind of game, so I didn't give it a rating. It's not terrible, it's just short and entertaining.
