Synopsis
In a town called Cypressa, surrounded by swamplands, there was a young Hero, a man of local legend! He continuously saved the town from bandits, located hidden treasures, slayed marsh dragons, and helped old widows carry their groceries. Truly, he was a shining star in a town surrounded by mud.

But one day, their Hero disappeared…

To protect his inhabitants from similar fates, the duke of the land outlawed all physical and magical fighters. Young adults who wish to train their might were sent to barracks in a faraway town, while those magically inclined were either arrested or sent to an academy. “For the good of the people.” Not surprisingly, this was enough encouragement from nearby tribes to begin raiding the village, while the duke and his family remained safely hidden behind walls. Cypressa was no longer the bustling city in the glades. It had become a crumbling village in the bog.

Now, Cypressa is under attack by a mysterious villain who has plans on destroying the entire city. By poor misfortune, a young woman is given the quest to locate the long-lost hero in order to save the town. She’ll meet new friends, become stronger, and discover terrible truths about Cypressa. Will she reach the Hero in time?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a new story that I've been working on for the last couple of weeks. The entire plot is already etched out, so I know how it's going to end and what's happening in the middle. It was meant to be a "short story" that I could make to just get used to MV, but I've actually really enjoyed making it so far, and have expanded the story into four chapters. Each chapter will feature an "intermission" from the story in which, instead of partaking in side quests, you will enjoy learning the backstories of each of the characters through "Character Quests" - a form of character arc. Each character will have about 2 or 3 "parts" to their story, spread out across the chapters.

Edit 11/16: Another Small Update
1.04
  • Hopefully fixed more passability issues
  • Added an event between Serenity Mountain and the Swamp so I'm not losing people to lack-of-story-boredom
  • Added a new spellbook for Aislyn to learn a new spell!
  • Daer has a new ability as well
  • Monsters will now respawn after 2~3 minutes

Important Bug!
Don't leave the map or save and return during the Marsh Puzzle. I am using Yanfly's "Save Event" plugin (it works between battle events) but it doesn't seem to work whenever you leave and come back. I need to figure that one out.

I took some of your feedback and fixed up the game a bit. Here's the change log:
  • Fixed some passability, grammar, and event issues
  • Added music to the beginning =]
  • No more random encounters! All monsters are evented. Let me know if you find yourself underleveled for the boss, though.
  • Added "Through" to the dead enemies so you shouldn't get stuck anymore
  • Increased Daer's hit rate from 95% to 100% (not sure why he missed so often - he has the highest agi and luk in the bunch!)
  • Added unique battle commands to make things a little less generic
  • Battle Sequences! Only for Lightning Bolt, Magic Missile, Daer's Attack, and Backstab. I'll add the rest later.

I still have a ways to go. I want to add more secret places, more things to interact with, more personality to Cypressa's denizens. But I didn't want to keep a broken up for download either.

Just keep in mind that it's still an unfinished demo / Chapter 1 =] Giving me your feedback (especially bug fixes) helps guide my decisions.

If you're interested in becoming a play tester for my future chapters, let me know! It'd be great to have people to test my games before I release them to the public.

Thanks again, guys!

NOOOOOOOOO why does skill cost work by %!? so it increases as i get stronger!?

encounter rate is kind of high :(

escape failing is stupid :/

beating the 2 bandits near the village is impossible. it seems they also get more life if you level up.
i was almost able to kill bandit B while at level 3 but level 5 i got destroyed.

surprised the bandits didn't even consider raping her when they would eat her. but i guess its possible they have became that way from the desperate times.

According to Fill Chalices effect it shouldn't be a target spell. so why can you use it on Daer?

its odd when you go back to town no one comments on the bandit with you. at the very least you would think your best friend
Janice would change her dialog.after all not only is someone with you it has been some time since you left her house.

she still doesn't comment when you get a 3rd member!?
at least i am extremely thankful for warping the team back to town! :D

this game would really benefit from something that negates random encounters...they are annoying and tedious

General 2H 35M (i grinded for a while and think it was a good idea to) no spoilers
Well...i did not enjoy this game. i play rpgs for plot and characters and this is too battle focused.while i am interested in the character and plot for this game. most of the time i was in battles rather then experiencing the world.

outside the npcs in your starting town and chests outside indeed theres little to interact with.as for the battles themselves they were okay. we don't have a lot of skills which i personally like having 2-4 per character, more is okay if its a single character game.
i like how Aislyn has a skill that supports specifically. its cool team work :3

one thing that killed the immersion was going back to the town with new characters and no ones dialog changing or even your characters giving some comments at various times would of been interesting to build there personality.
going to your home or your friends house for example are key points.

Overall
despite my complaints/dislikes. this has potential. would be interested playing this again when completed and polished.

This was actually a great critique. You said you didn't like it XDD but your complaints are entirely fixable. Actually, I never went back to add dialogue to the townspeople after the 2nd party member joins (I have some quotes in my mind to use too) because it was meant to be a fairly linear demo, Place 1 -> Place 2 -> Place 3 -> Place 4. Especially after 3rd member joins, there's no change yet, because I was like - alright demo's done let's see what people think before I waste more time. ;)

Let me respond to your thoughts!
NOOOOOOOOO why does skill cost work by %!? so it increases as i get stronger!?
I know! I'm dumb. Her thunderbolt had been 10 MP the entire game but at the last minute I changed it to 10% MP to keep players on their toes haha. Bad design choice. I'll change it back!

encounter rate is kind of high :(
I can't figure out how to lessen this. Higher or lower weights don't seem to change anything for me. RNG is RNG. I do plan on adding evented monsters, however.

escape failing is stupid :/
Didn't know there was~ Is there a plugin to fix this?

beating the 2 bandits near the village is impossible. it seems they also get more life if you level up.
i was almost able to kill bandit B while at level 3 but level 5 i got destroyed.
Eep. That's a battle you're supposed to lose, so you can get captured and proceed with the plot. I'm impressed you almost got B! I wonder how I can make that more obvious so people don't try and grind for it...

surprised the bandits didn't even consider raping her when they would eat her. but i guess its possible they have became that way from the desperate times.
Haha that crossed my mind but I didn't want it to be a super dark game in that regard. Cannibalism... that's something the kids can deal with and no one would yell at me about. I think.

According to Fill Chalices effect it shouldn't be a target spell. so why can you use it on Daer?
You got so far! I haven't tested these abilities yet haha. They're just preplanned.

its odd when you go back to town no one comments on the bandit with you. at the very least you would think your best friend
Janice would change her dialog.after all not only is someone with you it has been some time since you left her house.
Yep! Explained above. There's going to be a big - ehh spoilers I guess. But yeah. I'll fix that when Daer joins.

she still doesn't comment when you get a 3rd member!?
at least i am extremely thankful for warping the team back to town! :D
You're welcome!

this game would really benefit from something that negates random encounters...they are annoying and tedious
I would agree with you.

I'm super thankful for your feedback and it gives me hope that I can make it better. I've gotten other comments saying the story is just too boring. Maybe if I add the evented monsters, there will be less of a disconnect while traveling between the different story segments.
Hi, I just beat the demo and hope for more.
I found some Gliches:
Some tiles are passable, like mirrors (nearly left map, only in Cypressa), moss and and the green water tiles.
The storm amulet changed to a Angelic amulet.

My hit chance of back stab was around 66% (10 hits, 5 misses).
The spell costs of lightning bolt getting up is nonsens, because the spell isn't improving the same way. Sometimes magic-missile is nearly as strong. And only the slimes in the beginning are truly weak against lightning - all the water-elemented enemies should be.

Your walking speed is incredible, I had to set the Auto-dash off to walk without difficulty.
Is fill Chalice already working? I used it on Lisbeth but did't see any change in damaging/healing.
Use the cupboards, boxes, pots for hidden objects (without sparks), even some comment like "there isn't a useful/interesting book" is better. (like A. house)
Thanks for the feedback!! I'll respond in a different color within your quote =D

Thanks! Yeah, I need to fix those.
The storm amulet changed to a Angelic amulet.
Yep that was a known bug. I had changed the item without changing his dialogue. Whoops!

My hit chance of back stab was around 66% (10 hits, 5 misses).
I don't know why Daer misses so often. He has the highest agi and luk, his hit rate is 95%, and his attacks all have a success rate of 100%. There's probably some plugin messing with the formula and I'm not sure where to find it lol

Are there other water-elemented enemies? And yeah. Although the spell is improving (her magic attack increases), it was difficult to balance her MP usage with her growth rate. But I changed it back to a static number!

Your walking speed is incredible, I had to set the Auto-dash off to walk without difficulty.
There's a bug with framerates on different monitors. What's normal on my computer isn't on someone else's (either too fast or too slow). I'm going to keep the walking speed the way it is until there's some larger fix. You shouldn't be dashing everywhere anyway! ;P
Is fill Chalice already working? I used it on Lisbeth but did't see any change in damaging/healing.
It has a small effect at the moment (20% increase) but I might increase it if enough people complain.
Use the cupboards, boxes, pots for hidden objects (without sparks), even some comment like "there isn't a useful/interesting book" is better. (like A. house)
It's still a work in progress demo. I plan on adding that stuff later!

Thanks again! Every point is helpful!
