Sacred Reviews: Teddy Bear Tyrannizer

Intro

Teddy Bear Tyrannizer is a difficult game to review in my opinion for two major reasons. The first issue is that the game is so short that it barely has a chance to make an impression on the audience before its over. Secondly the main driving force behind this short game is its comedic appeal, but what people find funny is highly subjective. Some people watch a character like Major Payne fart and laugh while others find such jokes so low brow that they almost consider them offensive. Thankfully the jokes in this game are a tiny smidge higher in the pecking order then fart jokes, for the most part. Though, I suppose it's time I got around to discussing the game in a more meaningful way by taking a look at the plot.

Story

The main comedic driving force in this game is the plot, which is about a hapless, boot licking minion being sent into a magical forest by a young overlord to slaughter a bunch of teddy bears and the magical pony that created them. And depending on how well you do in carrying out her orders she will either reward or punish you.

On the positive side of things I think the basic premise here is a good concept for a comedic game. On the downside, I don't think the rest of the game is strong enough to make it work.

Gameplay

I'll be upfront in admitting that I'm not particularly fond of shooting games like Teddy Bear Tyrannizer in the first place, but my issues with this game go beyond personal preference. My first issue with this game is that the enemies are a bit too fast in my opinion. This is an issue since the game places a strict time-limit on the player to track down and eliminate all of the teddy bears. A time-limit that is entirely insufficient in my opinion considering how fast they are and how difficult it can be to stumble across an enemy unit after you've obliterated the first dozen or so.

Another issue I have with the game is that enemies magically disappear if they make contact with you. This wouldn't be an issue in and of itself, but if an enemy leaves the screen in this fashion it doesn't count as a kill for the player which means its now impossible for you to get the highest score possible in the game.

And to finish my list of complaints off. I also find it rather annoying that the game doesn't always clearly indicate when your fireballs have made contact with an enemy unit. An issue that has led to me taking hits in the past.

Graphics

On the graphical side of things Teddy Bear Tyrannizer is rather average, which isn't that much of a surprise considering it largely relies on the default assets that come with RPG Maker VX Ace. If anything the few pieces of custom art in this game are more of a hindrance then a strength since they stick out like a sore thumb from the rest of the work.

Conclusion

Teddy Bear Tyrannnizer is a short-comedic game that doesn't really stand up to scrutiny in my opinion. While I like the underlying concept behind the plot, the gameplay itself is in need of a major overhaul in my opinion. As it stands I really wouldn't recommend this title unless your extremely curious.

Recommendations

01) For starters I'd increase the length of the game. The best way to do this in my opinion would be to split the forest up into multiple sectors like SUCV - The Battle of Brownsea.

02) I'd suggest either going all custom on the graphics or just sticking to the default resources available with RPG Maker VX Ace. Either way this would give the game a more consistent presentation in terms of visual style.
