“THERE IS NO NIGHTMARE IN DAYBREAK. THE CITY IS ABSOLUTELY FINE. PLEASE FORGET THAT IT EVER EXISTED.”

Weird and unfortunate things are happening in the city of Daybreak. To the rest of the world, the city seems to have simply vanished, but inside, it has become a playground for mysterious beings who see humans only as hosts for their own amusement.

Alicia’s a bit strange. She still likes to wear her old baseball jersey, even though her team disbanded over a year ago. She can see otherworldly creatures that no one else seems to notice. She also has weird powers that she keeps hidden from the rest of the world. But when she receives a call for help from her niece in Daybreak, she’ll do anything to save her.

Caught up in the struggle along with Alicia are Miriam, a secretary and gun aficionado who only wants to escape the city, Lamar, an overworked middle school English teacher, and Dottie, Alicia’s niece, who has been captured for some nefarious purpose.

Explore what’s left of the ravaged city and find your way through surreal otherworldly areas that connect the broken urban shell. Encounter any other citizens who have survived and make contact with the strange entities that now inhabit this realm. Survive. Or be swallowed up by the city and forgotten forever.

Controller Support: If you'd like to play this game with a controller rather than the keyboard, then press F1 while the game is running and select the "Gamepad" option. From there it should allow you to remap the controls to your controller.

I know not every controller works with RPG Maker but I've gotten both a wired XBox One controller and the wireless 8BitDo controller to work with it, just from my own experience.

Window Size: You can double the window size by pressing F6, or go fullscreen by pressing F5.

Warnings: Game contains flashing lights and swearing.

Content Warnings: *sorta-spoilers?*
Child death, sounds of babies crying, last moments of a parent, mentions of suicide, general creepy stuff

NOW ON STEAM! Weird and Unfortunate RELEASE!

Click here to see Weird and Unfortunate Things Are Happening's STEAM PAGE!!!!

I finally pushed that big shiny launch button over on Steam, and now Weird and Unfortunate is up there and available to play, still for free!

I go by Sapphire Dream games over on Steam as a bit of rebranding, as I've been struggling for a while with the fact that "unity" is easily confused with the game making engine and I couldn't think of a way to remix it to sound unique.

This is my first game on Steam so I'm hoping I did everything right, but all my testing with the achievements and everything seemed to work, so fingers' crossed!

Huge thank you to everyone who wishlisted the game and promoted it on Twitter and itch and elsewhere! I really appreciate it!

Would you like to see any other of my games on Steam? I've already started tweaking Luxaren Allure for a possible Steam release, but we'll see how that goes.

Thanks again everyone!!! :DDDDDDDDDD

This is such a great game, good job Unity! (And Maki for the great art and Sooz for co-writing and everyone else who worked on it)
I love the story too, and my favourite character is Dottie, she reminds me of myself in some ways!

Thanks so much, Kloe! :DDDD Glad you enjoyed it! ^_^

Sooz says Dottie reminds her of me XD

Really? Yay I guess? xD
I guess I feel a bit awkward about it because finding most of the secrets didn't really feel like a matter of skill than it does a matter of patience and and a basic level of attention to detail.

Not that they were a huge chore to find to begin with, they weren't, it's just that I'd be surprised if nobody else didn't find those secrets.

Also, the irony is pretty thick how I was able to find the big secrets yet I never found that Easter egg.

In addition, I don't know why we are communicating through hide tags anymore. xD

I don't know you as well, but I kind of got a similar vibe from it too? It's just from me remembering that you've been bullied in the past, though I'm curious as to how much personal reflection this game has.

Good point. AHEM.

I guess I need to work on my secret-hiding then! I'll brainstorm some new ways to go about it. Interestingly, while many of the testers did in fact find most of the secrets, and I think all of them were above 50%, it still did vary a bit on who found how much.

It's a fine line, as I want people to feel like they're finding stuff but not put in stuff that no one will find. I'll take more risks and put in more obscure stuff later down the line, tho. Like maybe something that requires deciphering some of those weird letters >:D

It's cool to consider, but it's not a big thing to fix imo. Combing every inch of the map is pretty much a part of my playstyle for RPGs.

For my own part, I found a total of 4 during my initial play, and I found them all for my most recent play. I think one of the "new" secrets involved an empty house (that sometimes had the teleport-slug in it), and I didn't associate the key item that you get from the Fortune Ticket guy with the lone/spooky house. I mostly figured that the item, and the lone/spooky house were both "later" things, or otherwise teaser material!

*Edit: Oddly enough, I can identify somewhat with Dottie, myself. I wasn't bullied as a kid (thank the Gods), but, being a shy/withdrawn person, absolutely.
Just finished the demo and I have to say that you and the others did a great job so far with it! The dialogue was pretty good and the battles were well excecuted too, most of them weren't much of a problem in Lucid Dream difficulty but they were still well made.

All in all, this was really enjoyable so far and I can't wait to see the rest of it! :D

P.S. :
I'm an ACE SECRET HUNTER, baby! :P

Honestly, I didn't mean Dottie to parallel me too much. However, the thing about someone dumping my books in the trash did, in fact, happen to me, several times in middle-school.

They told me I was mad when I said I was going to create a spidertable. Who’s laughing now!!!

Got a feeling a lot of game players are gonna identify with the shy, withdrawn nerd.

Okay, is it just me, or does the "Lost Childhood" track sound like something right out of Parasite Eve?

Just to let everyone know (and because my previous post got erased when the server died) that I'm working on an extended version of the prologue for the game! I'll make a blog post once it's done ^____^

I didn't think about it before, but part of it certainly does have kind of a Parasite Eve vibe. I really need to replay that game. So weird but so neat and fun!
I literally just realised my review got dead... and I don't save them in any way, shape or form - I write them on the actual review pages and post them straight from them so. Welp.

For shame. I always type my reviews in Word documents before posting them. :)

It will live on in my heart. ^_^ It also helped me improve the game, so its impact is not lost.
It's silly of me, I know, but I tend to use RMN as the place I keep stuff so having it lose information means... welp. orz

Then again, when the full version comes out it just means that I'll be able to write a review for it without worrying about an older review covering the same ground. X3

I write stuff like that in my email window, but then I delete the email when it gets up on the site, so I would have been just as screwed in the end >.<;;;

I'll look forward to your review when the full version comes out :DDDDDDDDD
Oh man, my worst thing is writing out an entire post, then going to change tab and accidentally closing the tab/browser. I did that twice today when doing the Misao topic - once closing the tab after editing a big chunk of the entries, once closing the browser after I'd finished it all and didn't hit post (my mouse spazzed out and flew to top-right instead ;.; )

That said, I did write a blurb about the game in said Misao topic, since it counts for a Misao as of this month. >.<)b

Don't expect me to save things for you guys in the next ~3 weeks, 'kay?

***

So, given the first pic, we rescue Dottie then fight our way back out of the city or something? Else she doesn't get any EXP or upgrade chances... But hey, new members get auto-leveled, so maybe it doesn't matter as much?

... Should we be able to sell Alicia's starter bat? Even though it's a prized/sentimental possession?

Is Alicia's name a reference to Alice in Wonderland?
:O

You are amazeballs! >.<)b

I'll work on getting this back on the site! Thanks!
