“THERE IS NO NIGHTMARE IN DAYBREAK. THE CITY IS ABSOLUTELY FINE. PLEASE FORGET THAT IT EVER EXISTED.”

Weird and unfortunate things are happening in the city of Daybreak. To the rest of the world, the city seems to have simply vanished, but inside, it has become a playground for mysterious beings who see humans only as hosts for their own amusement.

Alicia’s a bit strange. She still likes to wear her old baseball jersey, even though her team disbanded over a year ago. She can see otherworldly creatures that no one else seems to notice. She also has weird powers that she keeps hidden from the rest of the world. But when she receives a call for help from her niece in Daybreak, she’ll do anything to save her.

Caught up in the struggle along with Alicia are Miriam, a secretary and gun aficionado who only wants to escape the city, Lamar, an overworked middle school English teacher, and Dottie, Alicia’s niece, who has been captured for some nefarious purpose.

Explore what’s left of the ravaged city and find your way through surreal otherworldly areas that connect the broken urban shell. Encounter any other citizens who have survived and make contact with the strange entities that now inhabit this realm. Survive. Or be swallowed up by the city and forgotten forever.

Controller Support: If you'd like to play this game with a controller rather than the keyboard, then press F1 while the game is running and select the "Gamepad" option. From there it should allow you to remap the controls to your controller.

I know not every controller works with RPG Maker but I've gotten both a wired XBox One controller and the wireless 8BitDo controller to work with it, just from my own experience.

Window Size: You can double the window size by pressing F6, or go fullscreen by pressing F5.

Warnings: Game contains flashing lights and swearing.

Content Warnings: *sorta-spoilers?*
Child death, sounds of babies crying, last moments of a parent, mentions of suicide, general creepy stuff

NOW ON STEAM! Weird and Unfortunate RELEASE!

Click here to see Weird and Unfortunate Things Are Happening's STEAM PAGE!!!!

I finally pushed that big shiny launch button over on Steam, and now Weird and Unfortunate is up there and available to play, still for free!

I go by Sapphire Dream games over on Steam as a bit of rebranding, as I've been struggling for a while with the fact that "unity" is easily confused with the game making engine and I couldn't think of a way to remix it to sound unique.

This is my first game on Steam so I'm hoping I did everything right, but all my testing with the achievements and everything seemed to work, so fingers' crossed!

Huge thank you to everyone who wishlisted the game and promoted it on Twitter and itch and elsewhere! I really appreciate it!

Would you like to see any other of my games on Steam? I've already started tweaking Luxaren Allure for a possible Steam release, but we'll see how that goes.

Thanks again everyone!!! :DDDDDDDDDD

I literally just realised my review got dead... and I don't save them in any way, shape or form - I write them on the actual review pages and post them straight from them so. Welp.

RIP long-ass review and weird monster pictures. :<

Don't expect me to save things for you guys in the next ~3 weeks, 'kay?

Wow, thanks so much! You're amazing, Malandy!

So, given the first pic, we rescue Dottie then fight our way back out of the city or something? Else she doesn't get any EXP or upgrade chances... But hey, new members get auto-leveled, so maybe it doesn't matter as much?

Hehe, I'd say but I don't want to spoil anything. Things may not turn out to be that simple. :D

... Should we be able to sell Alicia's starter bat? Even though it's a prized/sentimental possession?

While that's a very good point, she's also in a dire situation, so I imagine she might sell it. I suppose making it unsellable is an option, and maybe it could be upgradable far down the line? But then it kind of sucks if you sold it in an earlier version and are locked out of getting it back to upgrade it.

Is Alicia's name a reference to Alice in Wonderland?

No, though that would have been cool. In actually, I've always liked the names of the two knights that work with Agrias and end up joining you in Final Fantasy Tactics. Their names are Alicia and Lavian. So that's where the name comes from XD;;; I know, it's kinda a dorky place to get a name from >.<;;; but I think the name is nice and suits her.

I refused to sell Margaret.

Hehe ^_^

...I suppose another option (which is a bit more mean) is still allow you to sell it AND make it turn into an awesome weapon late in the game XD
How long is the game supposed to take, in full? 'Cause I ground my way into unlocking all of Alicia's skills in ~3-4 hours, using the Alarm enemy in the office.

Also, is the Horror Eater+, or whatever, the upgrade from Regen 50% of damage to 75%, didn't the upgrade text say 80%?

The bullets were TooAwesomeToUse, 'cause they were so limited, same with the Healing items, especially since there are Heal Mouths and the Injection.

But, then again, I'm sort of a hoarder? And really, the rate of Health Item drops is good enough that a good player could use them and recoup their loss after a few battles. ... I was saving up my Obols for the 1/2 SP skill. ... Also, nice not capping Obols at 999. ... Does that mean that there are skills that cost more than 999 Obols?

...What to do with excess Obols? ... Want to use like Megami Tensei Macca, buying off monsters and stuff? Or trade in for skill boosts? Hmm...

Sorta want to give Mariam a bat, just so I could choose between shooting things, with attacks that had the same strengths and weaknesses each time, into something a bit more varied... ... But, although she looks to have a bit more meat than Alicia, doesn't mean she's a better batter?

... How long are Alicia and Dottie's hair? ... So, is Dottie's hair blue, or a different kind of black?

I'm guessing around six to eight hours? It's a bit hard to tell, as while I have the rest of the game planned out, the actual time varies a bit. I may also lengthen it a little if I feel like there needs to be more character moments (I had to do that in Luxaren Allure XD;;)

The Passives are sort of a "Hey, you can save up for these instead of spending all the obols on new skills" bonus that hopefully will prove helpful to players.

The boosted version was originally just 75% and then I changed it to 80%. I must have forgot to change the description to that! I'll fix that, and also triple-check to make sure it actually absorbs 80% after you upgrade it.

I had planned to have the best skills in the game cost over 1000, so yeah. I picked 999 for the passive that cuts PSI use in half as it's still a large amount and triple 9s is appealing to me XD

Funny you say that, as Obols were very much inspired by Macca. Dunno why the Expanse has a currency that monsters carry around, but it makes more sense then them carrying dollar bills XD

It's just an RPG thing where each character uses their own weapon. Besides, Alicia has been using a bat for so many years and Miriam has been using guns since she was ten, so it makes sense that they'd do best with those weapons. (Tho one characters' choice of weapons later on is not something they've been using for years, but I digress)

About mid-waist for both, with Dottie's being a little longer. If this were a fantasy story, I'd say that it was absolutely blue. Given that it's modern, I tried to leave it a bit more up-in-the-air, as it's usually described as "dark," tho I think "black" was said once, so let's go with that. ^_^

The funny thing about your characters is that they just as weird as everything else in this game, in their own way. It works. :P

Oh man, my worst thing is writing out an entire post, then going to change tab and accidentally closing the tab/browser. I did that twice today when doing the Misao topic - once closing the tab after editing a big chunk of the entries, once closing the browser after I'd finished it all and didn't hit post (my mouse spazzed out and flew to top-right instead ;.; )

Protip: Ctrl-A, Ctrl-C.

I just don't. It's easier to write in the window.

...and just because you reopen a window doesn't mean the changes you made will return, Red. I still had to retype everything I'd lost.

I refuse to chump it by using other programs! That way lies defeat! I SHALL NOT CONCEDE!

CTL+SHIFT+T opens up the last tab you closed, and it even keeps whatever you write in the boxes. I've done that exact same thing, Liberty, and this has saved my sanity more times than I care to admit.

Yeah, this is super useful as it will restore a page you had closed. Will it restore info you had entered into that page, tho?

Ah, I guess that answers my question. I think Sooz meant to occasionally hit CTL A and CTL C while you're typing in a single window, so in case things get messed up you can restore a portion of it by pasting?
Oh yeah, you gotta know just how effective keyboard shortcuts are, especially when you're dealing with Excel data.

Btw, in case anyone is lost, Ctrl-A is to select all text, and well, you should know what Ctrl-C is.
...yeah, I know. I may be old but I'm not computer illiterate.
I just don't make it a habit to copy without pasting (or in the event that I do, I copy over it with something else entirely. And yes, before you try to tell me, there are apps that allow you to keep a copy of your clipboard so you can look at past copied info. I just don't see the need. )

Also, CTRL+A will not highlight just the text you want unless you're actually clicked into the text field. It will highlight the whole window content otherwise, even footer and header stuff, so saying "Just CTRL+A and copy" is actually not the best advice to give anyone you think might need the basics.

I am in the habit of Ctrl-A Ctrl-C in text fields all the time because of problems I've had in losing replies. It's legit saved me headaches a load of times.*

Also Ctrl-Shit-T is not really that reliable for retrieving typed info; I think you may have to tell your browser to save stuff you typed, which I am not a fan of doing.

*Like I just automatically did it after I was done typing.

Should have a new version up with the expanded intro and some additional character emotion busts (thanks a ton, Maki! :DDDDD) within the week! ^_^
I played trough the demo and quite enjoyed it.

I like that you made the traditional Earthbound baseball bat part of Alicia's character. Speaking of Alicia, I think you balanced her being a bit strange with her being relate-able really well. Ditto for the general weirdness, while everything is bizarre, the monsters employ an easily understandable task and reward system.

As for the gameplay, I do like that the game tells me how effective a skill will be. However, the game hasn't progressed to a level where combat is really tactical, at least not yet. Maybe later when more characters join.

Thanks a lot, Crystalgate! :DDDDD So glad you enjoyed it and like Alicia's character and how the weirdness is handled! ^_^

I think you're right about the lack of tactics. The gameplay gets a little more added to it after the cliffhanger, so I'm hoping that'll help things (as will getting new party members).
whats with the title i got at the end of the demo
