“THERE IS NO NIGHTMARE IN DAYBREAK. THE CITY IS ABSOLUTELY FINE. PLEASE FORGET THAT IT EVER EXISTED.”

Weird and unfortunate things are happening in the city of Daybreak. To the rest of the world, the city seems to have simply vanished, but inside, it has become a playground for mysterious beings who see humans only as hosts for their own amusement.

Alicia’s a bit strange. She still likes to wear her old baseball jersey, even though her team disbanded over a year ago. She can see otherworldly creatures that no one else seems to notice. She also has weird powers that she keeps hidden from the rest of the world. But when she receives a call for help from her niece in Daybreak, she’ll do anything to save her.

Caught up in the struggle along with Alicia are Miriam, a secretary and gun aficionado who only wants to escape the city, Lamar, an overworked middle school English teacher, and Dottie, Alicia’s niece, who has been captured for some nefarious purpose.

Explore what’s left of the ravaged city and find your way through surreal otherworldly areas that connect the broken urban shell. Encounter any other citizens who have survived and make contact with the strange entities that now inhabit this realm. Survive. Or be swallowed up by the city and forgotten forever.

Controller Support: If you'd like to play this game with a controller rather than the keyboard, then press F1 while the game is running and select the "Gamepad" option. From there it should allow you to remap the controls to your controller.

I know not every controller works with RPG Maker but I've gotten both a wired XBox One controller and the wireless 8BitDo controller to work with it, just from my own experience.

Window Size: You can double the window size by pressing F6, or go fullscreen by pressing F5.

Warnings: Game contains flashing lights and swearing.

Content Warnings: *sorta-spoilers?*
Child death, sounds of babies crying, last moments of a parent, mentions of suicide, general creepy stuff

NOW ON STEAM! Weird and Unfortunate RELEASE!

Click here to see Weird and Unfortunate Things Are Happening's STEAM PAGE!!!!

I finally pushed that big shiny launch button over on Steam, and now Weird and Unfortunate is up there and available to play, still for free!

I go by Sapphire Dream games over on Steam as a bit of rebranding, as I've been struggling for a while with the fact that "unity" is easily confused with the game making engine and I couldn't think of a way to remix it to sound unique.

This is my first game on Steam so I'm hoping I did everything right, but all my testing with the achievements and everything seemed to work, so fingers' crossed!

Huge thank you to everyone who wishlisted the game and promoted it on Twitter and itch and elsewhere! I really appreciate it!

Would you like to see any other of my games on Steam? I've already started tweaking Luxaren Allure for a possible Steam release, but we'll see how that goes.

Thanks again everyone!!! :DDDDDDDDDD

The challenge on Nightmare was just right. No pressing need for grinding Exp or farming Obols. It was a rough go in the first few areas, but became 'SNES Hard' from that point on which is about comfortable for me. I lost to a couple of bosses, but nothing a good plan couldn't sort out.

Although the superboss sent my near-full health party to Dead in a single turn, and I was like

So I did grind a little. In hindsight, I'd completely forgotten about Dottie's chess pieces. I could've beaten him the first or second time if I'd used them. Phooey.
Anyway, that's enough of my rambling.

am already planning to have at least one postgame dungeon in there, too! :DDDDDDDDDDDD

>:DDDDDDDDD
I prefer pre-ending uber-dungeons personally. It's more satisfying to bust butt all the way through, then set the controller down as the final boss disintegrates and watch the best ending.
Maybe you could compromise by having the end of the uber-dungeon make the final boss stronger as a consequence? Just throwing ideas out there :P

Be sure to include Dumbass Ghost and Smartass Ghost as enemies in LA2. They made me laugh xD

I'm glad the difficulty level was to your liking :DDDDDD

As for the chess pieces, in hindsight, I like the idea of how I executed them less and less as I think about it so I'll probably do stuff like that differently in the future.

Interesting. Yeah my only worry is that they make the final dungeon and last boss too easy but I can do like you said and make it harder if the player has already cleared the bonus dungeon.

I do have one other worry though. I was planning on possibly (small spoiler)
giving you Chisa and Merel from LA as a post-game reward, inspired by how Disgaea sometimes does stuff like that
and I feel like you'd be a little weird to do that before the final boss instead of after. But I'll keep thinking about it and maybe I can find something that works.

Edit: and yeah sure maybe I'll edit in those ghosts and put them in the game too. They aren't the only call-backs and references I'll be making XDXD
Well, I needed TVTropes to tell me about Endgame+ / Third Ending... Now to see it for myself! Eventually. Likely after Christmas.

Callbacks! Wooo! ... Multiverse! ... Man, that ending's gonna affect things if the Expanse joins the universes...
Real nice. Full stars on every category. My only complaint, art related, is that the sclera constricts the iris in this game's character art whereas the iris should just constrict the pupil. MakioKuta did really good otherwise. I also feel like I'm the only one that gets value from chess pieces after having seen Kaz and Slio stream it (megaelixer syndrome), although maybe that comes from having played a lot of SMT lately.

Thanks very much for the feedback and praise! :DDD As for the artwork, to each their own, but given the art's style, that doesn't bother me so much.

As for the Chess Pieces, yeah it's a definite Megalixer Syndrome. In hindsight I feel like most people didn't use them, so I think I'll be a lot more wary of tying skills to items like that in the future.

Thanks again :D

Edit: Also wanted to mention, both Kaz's and Slio's streams were a ton of fun to watch! This is the most any of my games have been streamed, so if anyone who has streamed it is around, thank you so much for that!
Can the language the monsters speak in (when not English) can be decoded?

I absolutely love the game so far.

^^sorry for the double post- and nevermind!! quick tvtropes search revealed it's monoalphabetic, so it should be straight shooting from here :)

Thanks for all the effort and layers you put into this game, it's an amazing experience.
Is there anything useful in the safe in the part of Daybreak patched into the final dungeon?

There's a Prism Pellet and some ammo, as well as a prodigal bone, which can unlock yet another secret if you have two of them.

Basically, unless you're trying to hunt for all the secret stuff, it's not incredibly vital.
He-he-he!

Guys, your game is amazing! Lots of fun!

Depends on where in the game you are. Inventory Space is infinite until you collect like... 15 of something?

Erick Vaughn is the Collector in question.

Yeah, anyone who buys or sells stuff counts as a collector, but it's usually Erick Vaughn. You'll first meet him in the clinic, which is pretty early in the game, it's in the area after the first boss, and you have to meet him before passing on to the next area.

how i find the princess's heart

It's hidden in the Mind Mines, but can only be picked up after you have purified the Flying Eye Tile. I'll put the directions to it under here.

When you start the mine mini-game, choose the grey door on the upper left. Continue north thru a door. Then take the door on the right. Then take the door on the left. If you continue on this path, you'll get to an area with a glowing red outline.

The red-outline-area connects to a bunch of dead-end rooms, and one of them has the heart. You'll know you've found the right room if you find a chamber with grey mine floor and an item in the center in something that resembles a mine-cart.
