It's not terrible... I think.

I want to start this review by saying that this game does not deserve the 1-star rating that it had for the last 10 years (because of one negative review from 2010). That rating signifies that the game is really bad, terrible, horrible. It is not!

Does this mean that I'm protecting the Staff of Cyrenia? No, it isn't a very good game either, it's just far from the worst game I've ever played on this site. Since my last review, I have explored games further and came upon this and I sometimes like to dive straight into some average, or even badly rated game and hopefully come out surprised. This game didn't offer me that pleasure, unfortunately, but it's not because it's bad, it's because it's just very, very generic!

The characters are cliche, predictable and only exist to serve the plot of the game. They have almost no personality, they aren't memorable or even likable, which is a big problem. If you've read my previous reviews, I mentioned about both Feral Dreams and New Eden that they had amazing characters, which felt as if they exist in this world outside of the story and missions. They have random conversations in those games and hobbies, tastes and things like those make characters. This game forgot about personalities.

The gameplay of the Staff of Cyrenia is very... expectable. It is a dungeon crawler, as the game proudly announces. The problem is that it's way too filled with the random encounters, which almost made me give up from this game at some points. However, it's not that it isn't fun, it's okay.

The music is generic, as you may have expected from just one glance at this game. It serves the purpose of setting up a general atmosphere.

After bashing on almost every category of this game, I have to say that I also, for some reason, enjoyed this game. It isn't bad, despite all of the many negatives that it possesses. The characters are bland, the music is generic, the gameplay is decent, though fun, the mapping is almost atrocious, yet, it's really not a terrible experience. If you're looking for something to pass the time, you can do worse than this game.

For that reason, I give the Staff of Cyrenia a 2 and half star rating.
