Star and Roses

Star's Favour is a short dungeon-crawling RPG created in a week by Indrah in RPG Maker VX Ace. It features retro pixel art and can be completed in less than two hours.

The plot is that a star spirit named Starlet was sent to earth to find heroes to banish the monsters that have invaded her Star Temple. Unfortunately she got a little drunk and passed out, and thus was stuck with last pick for squad of heroes; the sword-wielding spitfire Karnak and her posse, the vain sorceress Mab, an enthusiastic if whiny hunter named Edian, and a reserved warden named Olga.

The plot.

There's almost no focus on the actual plot as it's just an excuse to get the player in a dungeon and start killing things. The characters do stop rather frequently to have conversations, but aside from some really surface level personality traits, none of them have much in the way of characteristics. The only noteworthy facet of the party is that Karnak and Mab are lovers, and they'll make sure to remind you of this fact, over and over again, in every single conversation, much to the annoyance of their companions and, most likely, the player.

The Star Temple is arranged in about four floors laden with monsters to kill, treasure to find, and helpful spirits that will give you hints. Combat is non-random and there are a set number of encounters in the game. Encounters are color-coded, with blue monsters being generic enemies and red being more challenging mini-boss level encounters. Silver enemies will give you a skill upgrade and gold will teach your party a new skill. it ends up feeling rather similar to Craze's Wine & Roses although lacking that game's scale, sense of mystery, and challenge.

The meat of the game is the combat and it's pretty simple and not very challenging, but it does feel rather satisfying. Your characters have quite a few ways to support and combo with each other which leads to great party synergy. Your party heals fully after every encounter and your supply of items is replenished entirely after every battle so there is never any risk. This unfortunately conspires to make the game feel very toothless and you'll never feel threatened or have to make any interesting strategic decisions. You'll win every fight if you throw yourself at it enough.

POW POW POW POW

The game interestingly feels like only one part of a greater whole, like perhaps the player was supposed to have played some other game to get the backstory, and it's definitely left open for further adventures. My guess is this was intentional on the developer's part if she ever wanted to expand this concept further.

If you're in the mood to play a very easy dungeon crawler you could do worse than Star's Favour, and it's an impressive game considering it was made in a week, but it lacks any true challenge, and it's not a game that's going to leave much of an impression.

Of...of all my games to be reviewed by a legend, why this one. WHYY *cries*

*reads*

Well, that wasn't SO bad. It's not a good game, I have no excuse. I pulled it out of my ass in a week just to regain some dev practice when I was stagnant and the first time ever I handled gameplay at all. So the fact that it's not a complete trainwreck will have to suffice. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It is true that I initially wanted this as a much longer thing and left it open. I'm not sure it'll ever come to anything since I already have so much in the "gotta finish this someday" shelf, but who knows.

Thanks for the review anyway! It could have been so much worse XD

When did I become a legend? Do people in the other communities talk about me? Ahh!
Legendary status is what happens when you linger around a community that you once outputted a great deal of content for, but do so only sporadically now thus it feels somehow "special".

I've done about thirty reviews in the last six months. Is that 'sporadic?"

*Reads plot* Wait a minute, that other reviewer was right! Lunar Quest DOES totally rip this game off!
And a dungeon crawler is totally about the plot ..? Which appears in five sentences?

Seriously though I hope people don't cringe when they see their game has been reviewed by me. I've tried to leave that in the past.

Try using your Silviera persona more, then.

Nahh, it was cool. Was I supposed to cringe? I've read a few reviews of yours long ago, can't remember if they were particularly harsh, is that it?

I kind of have the reputation of RMN's resident hardass reviewer. Whether I deserve that or not probably isn't for me to say, but kentona did make a PSA about 'the problem with reviews' in which I was essentially cited as the 'problem.'

Come at me. Do your worst! >:)

I always thought the problem with reviews were the reviewers of said reviews. You know, the people who came in and said "uh, actually, this reads nothing like the game I played. your opinion is invalid".

I think the more "nasty" reviews or reviewers more comes from the developer sometimes that can't take it, then it can come off overly harsh.
Or like Corf said, the review reviewers.

Edit: Forgot to add that I see Indra as someone who is strong and confident and can realize flaws in her own work and deal with it great.
There are cases where certain reviews are kinda bullshit. Like, oh, .5 stars on a game that plays quite well, is well-presented and isn't a pile of buggyness. :coughcough:

That said, I find most soli reviews fair enough. Some can be a bit harsh but otherwise they're a'ight.

I did no such thing! I said people's view that a person who does a lot of reviews is some sort of super-reviewer of authority is dumb!
