Scary enough for an rpg maker game, enjoyable enough for a horror game.

Turtle Head is an rpg maker horror game made by Pikasprey. The game is based around 3 school kids sneaking into their school at night in search for ghosts. The game is somewhat similar to Ao Oni with it's graphics style and monster based gameplay, but it is definetly better.

If you played Ao Oni, you might somewhat have an idea on what this game is going to be like. You'll get chased a lot and you will need to explore a lot.

I'll basically start by reviewing the story. As I mentioned earlier, the game is about 3 kids sneaking into their school after hearing rumors about a ghost sighted inside the building. The story doesn't really have flaws, but it isn't really anything that stands out either. You get more explanations about what the mysterious figure is later on, however there isn't really much to satisy you. It might just be my fault for not piecing all the evidence in the game together, but it seems like the real lore of the game is hidden and left for you to figure out. Ofcourse, being the clueless person I am I wasn't too sure about the real story behind the game. I did basically understand some stuff like the story of the principal and his connection to all the incidents that happened, but I never really understood

Who the dead girl in the keep out room was. Also, was the killer a ghost? Or is there more to it?

Moving onto the gameplay, which I actually quite liked. The game is somewhat fast-paced, if that would be a good way of describing it. Your character can run pretty fast and most events are happen instantly which means you don't actually have to wait(unless you are hiding)for something to happen. Some of the puzzles in the game were pretty difficult to figure out, and I still don't get the logic behind some of them, especially not the computer password. This was also the first ever game where I actually had a lot of trouble with the chases. They were genuinely difficult, and considering I usually get through chases in a flash(dem skillz bruh)I found the chases here quite fun. Finally chases on my level I guess~ Upupupu~
While challenging, they are still not too difficult and easy to beat once you know where to go or the pattern you should run around in. I loved how the chases were difficult, but not to a point where they would drive you insane.

Next up is the thing I really wanted to talk about; the graphics. The game uses 100% custom graphics which are quite well. The tiles look pretty nice aswell as the character sprites, although some of the stuff is just redrawn versions of RTP. It still added a somewhat charm to the game though, so that's fine in my book! There character faces were okay. I didn't really like them at the beginning, but then I actually started to kinda like them. However the main thing that really impressed me was neither the sprites nor the faces. It was the monster CGs.

The monster's design isn't really all that scary, but with art like this you just can't help but admire it!

There was no music in the game most of the time, but that was fine by me. It really added to the atmosphere of the game, as the game is more sound based than music based. If I remember correctly, the only track in the game was the final chase theme which was quite a nice theme.

The charcaters are the biggest flaw in my opinion. The only character among the bunch that is actually likeable is Mason, even though he gets the least screentime. He is most people's favorite character from the looks of it, mainly because of how silly and sarcastic he is. Other than him we had Emma and Harriet, the main character. Emma is mostly just... there. She doesn't really have much of a personality and she isn't really likeable. Then there's Harriet, who is pretty much impossible to connect with because, well, she never speaks in the game, thus making Mason the only character in the game who actually had characteristics.

The mapping in the game was pretty good, especially considering the lack of tiles. They were pretty bland sometimes, but you can't really blame the developer because there isn't much to fill them with, honestly. Especially the old school building. The layout of the school was really weird as it didn't have a lot of classrooms and mainly just other buildings. Ofcourse, the game wouldn't be fun if you just traveled classroom by classroom looking for items, but it still doesn't make much sense. There is only one thing about the mapping of the game I would like to point out.

The walls going up to the stairs don't really make much sense and they break the perspective. Luckily, this is the only time tiles are used incorrectly in the game.

Finally I want to talk about what really made me enjoy the game. For an rpg maker game, turtle head can actually get pretty scary and unnerving. There's only one jumpscare-game over in the game, so the real scariness actually come from it's use of enemies. You spot the monster quite a few times in the game, but the weird thing is, he doesn't really seem to coming for you. He's just watching... He's just looking at your through windows and stalking you. This is really unnerving and well done. There's also a few scenes in the game that will try to mess with you. While not all of them can do the job, there was one scene that really managed to trick me.

The turtle plushie in the window scene.

Overall, I think I don't really have much left to say about the game. This was an experience I truly enjoyed, and it definetly shines among many other first games as something really worthwhile. I would personally recommend turtle head.
