Hi there, I'm here to present to the forums my last RPG made with RPG Maker 2003: Theia - The Crimson Eclipse. The game is now complete and you can download it from the game's official website for free, obviously!

www.theiarpg.com

- Synopsis -

Year 2310.
The world of Ariathale, a planet fueled by the power of Atlas, a mysterious versatile mineral, is facing a heavy crisis period due to mankind's greed.
Many years ago, the planet was filled with these crystal stones, but people started abusing it and the world fell into a state of recession.
The leaders of all ariathalian states met in the Tower-City of Halderos, the most important and rich city of all Ariathale, to decide the future of the planet.
In order to maintain the remaining Atlas resources, those leaders decided to ban the Atlas Technology until they'd find a new energy source capable of substitute the Atlas.
The story begins with Seth, an ex-imperial guard of the Levizoan Empire, escaping from his former comrades.
They are after him because Lord Meister, vassal of the Emperor, thinks that Seth is linked to the potential solution to the Crisis, but the young runaway doesn't want to return to the Vanguards Castle.

- Character descriptions -

To avoid spoilers, I'll show you only 4 of the 19 playable characters of the game! : )
Seth Sheridan:
Seth is a young man tormented by his past. What happened 2 years ago is the cause of his flee from the imperial guards of Reyel: the Vanguards. Lord Meister, vassal of the Emperor, thinks that Seth is linked to the potential solution to the Crisis: a mysterious Red Crystal.

Rudra:
Rudra is an old varzan (wolf-man) of the Marut clan, a shamans and hunters tribe. He was the clan's chief. His life was based on hunt and pray, but something happened to the clan. A rival tribe attacked the Maruts killing everyone even though they were less than them. Rudra says that they won because they used a strange Red Crystal with arcane powers. He follows Seth to discover the origin of this mysterious crystal.

Ferion:
Ferion is a Maverick, a group of rebels that opposes the Halderos Treaty, the treaty that banned the technology. He and his friends use the forbidden technology to help the people of Reikan Empire. He seems to be linked to the Scarlet Wyrms, a dangerous group of criminals looking for the Red Crystal.

Nadia:
A reserved girl that possesses a strange item that seems to be the potential solution of the Crisis. This item is one of the Red Crystals that both the Empires and the Scarlet Wyrms are looking for, and for this reason she will be involved in the adventure. Nadia is considered a witch by the people of her town, because she is the only one that can use Magic, a source of energy that disappeared many centuries ago.

- Features Overview -
Theia is a classic J-RPG game, so we have characters with Level, Experience, HPs, and so on. Characters level-up killing enemies, etc etc.
These are the main gameplay features:
40+ hours of gameplay (about 25-30 of main story, and 10 of subquests, secondary events and minigames)
14 subquests
12 trophies / achievements
4 different endings

- Characters -

The playable characters of Theia are 19. Each character enters the party with "Guest" condition. As the story progresses, some of them will find a reason to remain with Seth and then lose the condition. A Guest character cannot change his weapons and can't learn new skills.

- Weapon Upgrade and Atlas Shards System -

Each non-guest character has 3 or 4 weapons that can be created and upgraded by using crafting materials.
Many weapons are crafted with Atlas Technology, so the played can insert Atlas Shards inside the weapons to gain bonuses. These weapons also have Atlas Synergies, that unlock extra bonuses according to the equipped shard. This system resembles FFVII's Materia System.

- Skills, Ability Points -

The characters don't learn and upgrade skill by leveling up, but by using Ability Points (AP), a pool of points shared by all the characters.

- Exceed Technique -

The classic Limit Break. Each character has a bar to fill during the combat. When the bar is filled, the Exceed Technique, a powerful attack or buff, can be used. Each character fills the bar using a specific battle command (we can see this command in the Status Menu). Each character has his unique EX-Technique. At the end of a battle, the Exceed bar will empty.

- Mastery and Mastery Skills -

In the right side of the battle screen, there is the Mastery Bar: a special bar that charges up by using aggressive commands such as Attack and Skills, and unloads by defending or using items. The more the bar is loaded, the more bonuses we will receive at the end of the battle depending on the characters we are using. Each characters grants a bonus (EXP, AP, money, HP or SP recovery). We can also use this bar to apply passive bonuses by activating Mastery Skills.
The Mastery Skills are special passive skills unlockable by using APs, that grants bonuses during the combat. We can "equip" a Mastery Skill in the Skill Menu and set it at Level 1, 2 or 3. Obviously, the skills is more powerful at Level 3, but it is also more difficult to charge up the Domain Bar until it reaches the selected level.

- Camp -

While traveling in the World Map, the player can access to the Camp, where he can talk to the other party members and increase (or decrease) their stats, learn new infos about the lore and the characters, and also gain new skills that can be used in combat.

- Hunts -

During the adventure, the player may find Hunting Guilds that allows him to hunt down powerful enemies to gain rare items and equipments. The functioning is similar to FFXII's Hunts.

Thanks for the feedback!

I received tons of messages (here and on the game's social network pages) and I will fix the errors, bugs and untranslated parts. I need to fix some minigames toox I guess. Many of you had some problems with them and I think I'd better do something about it.

I still have to think a good solution but I will do something, don't worry : )

After fixing everything, I should probably add the fifth ending and the extra scenes that you can play in the italian version.

Stay tuned for next updates ; )

I've finally finished the game in all of its glory (clocked in around 43 hours)! S-ranked everything and finished all of the optional side quests, too (I'm just missing a single chest...).

I first found out about your game when only the Italian version existed a couple of years ago. I was so excited to play it that I slogged through about 2/3 of the game with Google translate. I never expected an English release to come out until you made an update post about how the translation was coming along, so I stopped playing then and patiently waited until the translation was released. Big thanks to your translation team for making this gem playable in English!

This is probably my new favorite RPGMaker of all time. The voice-acting and the vast amount of side-content with the very fitting OST pulled from so many different sources but combined into one very cohesive game has left me in awe. Seriously, I hope you know that what you've created was a blast to play through!

Are you working on any new games (sequel please! you can't leave us hanging after the "epilogue"...)? I'll be glad to check them out if you are!

Thank you! I'm glad you liked it that much! The only thing to do to support our work right now is "spreading the word" so if you want, write a review or suggest the game to your friends and other people. We'd really appreciate that :D

I'm not planning to make a sequel, unfortunately. I started a spinoff a couple of years ago but I never finished it. I think I'll focus on necroma, the last IGCM winner, next months. After that... I really don't know. I have many projects in my mind (one is the game "teased" in the final secret chapter. You'll understand if you played in Hard Mode XD) but I don't know if I'll make them. We'll see : )
Just finished this with an S rank on hard mode and completed/got everything except for 1 chest. Really amazing game and easily one of the best on the site and likely many other sites. There is quite a bit of untranslated text throughout the game. Most are one off lines and aren't that important, but the in battle dialogue like when facing
Horus
in Halderos, I feel is more important. I recall more than a few fights with in battle dialogue being untranslated. In the after story withered future there is a whole scene untranslated when talking to the wall in the ruins. You can't view details on
Gallion's
Lv.3 Genesis, because of an invalid image format. And Nion's gravity skill crashes the game, due to a file called Spezzagravit.2 not being able to be opened.
I noticed, that I don't get the Master Forger Trophy after crafting all weapons and upgrading them to level 3. When you finish the game, you got an "S" for this part.

And yeah, there is some untranslated text in this game, even with some Latin knowledge, I had trouble to understand it and I don't trust Google Translator.
Especially in the Extremordeal are some explanations in Italian. Or during the Challanges in the Arenathale, when the Domain/Mastery is blocked (AutoFury/AutoSeal).

One problem with Salvation Barrier level 3 - it should give immunity to standard attacks, but the mastery decreases as soon as the enemy attacks - so it is unusable.

Ever tried to equip Horus with the Dominus Omega? - that bug hurts the ears he looks like dead (Horus as the Extra Character). But he stands up as soon a negative ailment is applied.

I got the master forger trophy just fine after fully upgrading all characters weapons. During the ranking at the end, the trophy rank and one other only goes up to an A instead of an S, which I found a little inconsistent since all others go to an S, provided you reach the requirements.
Thank you for all the reports, I'll fix all the bugs and untranslated text. Have mercy, it's a 40-hours game so we may have missed some texts XD

Salvation Barrier lv3 is a little tricky. It depends a lot in the enemy's Threat level. Lv3 Mastery isn't the bar's cap but you can go a little further to maintain the lv3 bonus even if the enemy attacks.
I just finished it a second time, this time with an overall S rank. Only Missions/Trophies were A by default.

Now I just have to review my guide before I make it public. Mostly the original boss names are missing and the Gaia Shards have to get new numbers.

One question:
What is the Original Light for? I haven't found anything in the original guide and neither noticed a change in the ending (b).

And is there a possibility to see the alternative endings (I know that there are 5, not only the 4 mentioned in your guide) in English?

I found the answer to my first question, but most of the text is in Italian - so I don't understand much.
I will fix that part for sure. It's a sort of teaser for another game but I don't know if I'll ever start it. XD

For the fifth ending, there is a Bad Ending in the last italian version of the game but I haven't added it in the english version yet.

I will probably add it next months with a fixed release. But don't worry, you can use your savefiles and you can get the fifth ending with any kind of playthrough.
Hi, I have a problem I cannot do the part where Rudra and Horus are on bikes and have to stop the tank, I can get to the tank but cannot stop the bullets, is there a way to skip this bit please?

Welcome to the club. I had the same problem and a friend to do this part for me.
Just need to know: That is the worst mini game.
All minigames are nearly impossible to win as you have to do no mistakes especially when you have no reflexes and are slow due a physical handicap.
I even noticed that the faster your PC is the more difficult the minigames are.
I am afraid you have either to win this minigame or find someone to beat it for you.
It's not that hard. You could be confused at first, but you can do it in few tries.

In the first part you just need to dodge the rocks. It's as easy as it seems. Just stay in the free "cells" and avoid the rocks.

The second part is a bit tricky. You just need to continue to dodge: same for the first phase, but you must pay attention to the gatling gun now. As soon as the tank finishes to pull out the gun, press the deflect/parry button and you'll be all right.

I know it may seem hard at first, but it's completely doable. The game was released four years ago and this is the first time someone complains about the difficulty of that part. ^_^"
I will search for a walkthrough on youtube and I'll link here the part with the minigame.

You must understand that the PC have become faster in 4 years. I noticed the difference with another RPG Maker 2003 game and its minigames, as those suddenly became nearly unbeatable for me.
In the extra chapter for example, it is nearly impossible to beat the traps in both minigames, even when doing it perfecty.
I did it after x tries, but even experienced players will have trouble with those minigames.
In the motorcycle minigame and the drinking contest even my friend had trouble - the timing is really difficult.
As an experienced player, I got it done on try three. It was a bit challenging but not that bad.
Thanks you all for advice, but my PC is REALLY fast, and I cant do it, I have tried numerous times, the motorcycle bit is ok,ITS THE TANK. I will give it a few more goes but if not,it looks like new game time.

The extra chapter's traps are a bit too hard, that's true. I should really slow them down a bit. However I tried the motorcycle part in my 2-years-old pc and it runs as fast as in my older laptop.
From what's been written here, I can either assume this issue is due to some type of hardware acceleration being enabled, or maybe this depends on the monitor's refresh rate. It is true that the game has been tested, in the course of four years, on many different setups and this hasn't been a common issue. Technology changes, that much is true too.

Now, please do understand that we have very little control over the hardware side, since this is not our own executable: Theia uses a patched RPG Maker 2003 engine, after all. There is only so much we can do, on our end, to address these issues (also because they seem to affect a minority of the players).

Given our limited resources, the fact that this is not a paid effort, and the fact that we have very little information on your setups ("my PC is very fast" is not much to work with), it should come naturally that support is not something we can snap our fingers at. I wouldn't write Sierra an angry email because my PC doesn't run MSDos point&click adventure games natively. :) If you're finding an issue with your own setup, but you still want to play the game, you can probably look into the cause and correct the issue on your end way faster than we would. And you said it yourself: another RPG Maker 2003 caused the same issue.

There's many options available to keep playing the game: you could just copy your game files to a different machine, play through that part, and then resume your game on your PC when that's done. It's not ideal, but it's something easily done. Better than wait for us to patch something we have no control over.

Of course, no one's asking you to do anything. Theia is provided for free, and you can keep playing for as long as you enjoy it. If the troubleshooting to play RPG Maker 2003 games on your machine is too much for you to bother, then don't bother. It's a bummer, because we want people to enjoy the game, but we won't be throwing Exceeds at anyone if they stop playing because their setup doesn't work.

I was not complaining about it, believe me, a bigger problem is my arthritis etc. that is moreso the reason i cannot do it. Thanks anyway
If you hit enter as soon as the cannon door opens it should see you good.

I will admit that there's no real room for error with a lot of the minigames, which isn't a good idea. You either skim by with a last slither of health or have to restart again and that's not great design. Even a bit more health given during those minigames which require timing could probably help a bit so that you have a fairer chance. For example, hiding from the sniper was extremely hard because as soon as you entered a new screen you were going to get hit no matter what. I think I avoided it once and that was the one time I managed to get through to the end of that section.

That said, it's not incredibly hard, but it IS still a bit too challenging especially for those who have slower reactions. Perhaps even a "skip minigame" after a certain amount of times choice would be a good idea (if you want to make it a detriment to use, give prizes for completing the minigame manually - as with the stealth sections - and if you have to resort to a skip, just remove those rewards. Easy way to promote people playing the minigames, but allow for people who can't do them to continue the story).

PS: if you send me your save file I'd be happy to do the minigame for you. Just host it in your locker (hover over name in black bar up top, go to locker, upload file, grab link and PM me that link.)
Thanks for your advices, I'll try to adjust some numbers here and there XD
Hi.
This gonna be the next game i play (looks and seems to be a wonderful game), after i finished Everlong that has a skip puzzle option in the beginning of most of the puzzles. Is it possible to have 2 options, nomal and easy? With some different prices?
It`s still something special with RM2K3, and so fun that it`s still coming out wonderful games made with that engine.
