Three Ghostly Roses is a retro style game made with RPG Maker VX Ace.

It tells a story about a man named Edmund Brigham, a man who wakes up with only the image of Rose in his mind. Mysterious Gatekeeper tells him that he must reach Garden Tower. And with that, you're off to go punch faces of monsters for the next several hours.

So, yeah the premise of the game is pretty simple. The game immediately gave me the feeling of Final Fantasy 4 from the visual style.

Sadly, the Game does run into problems with the combat though. Edmund heals a little bit of HP each time he kills enemies and learns more moves very soon by defeating cloaked figures. Yet, the battles are especially the start of the game really boring. You're basically basic attacking most monsters and then uppercutting the ones that are immune to basic attack. Since you heal from killing monsters, I never had any troubles and all the enemies up until the first boss felt like minor inconveniences rather than actual threats. I was really starting to get tired of the game's battles already by the time I learnt the dropkick. Speaking of monsters, there's really no clear indication who is weak to what attack, there's pretty much no rhyme or reason to why anyone is weak to certain moves and it's really up to trial and error and then memorization of the weaknesses.

Even worse is the overarching designs of the maps: The game basically has you going in a linear corridor like path, forcing you to fight monster after monster who's blocking your path with almost never a chance to skip them even if you'd want. After the extremely easy start the game gets far harder at Garden Tower but the monotonous forced continuous fights only begin to drag the experience down more. Sometimes you move just a little bit and then just fight monster after monster. I had completely gotten tired of the game's grindy nature of its progression by the time I was halfway through the Garden Tower.

The game has charming aesthetic but sadly there's no full screen support.

Overall it's not a bad game but it really wears out its welcome and feels too grindy for me to recommend it. It's too bad because I really liked how it looked, but I hated how it played.

This makes me think you didn't get past the Garden Tower at all? That's super early in the game. I doubt it's a good representational review if you didn't get past that early stage.

I am aware but I really didn't like having to fight so many monsters, sometimes literally two steps apart from each other without any way of skipping them even if I'd want to. It really killed the game entirely for me since there were just non stop battles that you had to do one after another.
Yeah, for people like me who enjoy that dungeon crawling feel it's fine, but I can see how that is not everyone's cup of tea : ) Glad you got your voice out there.
Excuse me, it's called 3 Ghostly Roses, not 2.5 Ghostly Roses.
