The Saga Begins

The review for this series will be set in terms of a story, a complete chronicling of the events of Legion Saga I, II and III in their entirety. As such, this will be very much a spoiler review, though I suppose you would rather call it an overview. This is an experiment for the third week of the Meat Your Maker review event. Let's begin:

The following content contains spoilers for the story of Legion Saga I. If you haven't played the game yet and don't want to be spoiled, do not read this review.

Legion Saga I
By Kamau

Durane is sent by his father the king of Meluvet to seize control over Seimu and push the Garalasian military out of it. With unwavering trust in his sovereign's command, he succeeds in his mission and returns home to report on his conquest... but not all is well. During the night before he's sent out on his next mission, he finds himself unable to sleep, thoughts of the soldiers he's killed swarming his mind. "Is what I'm doing right?" he questions. A new day dawns...

He is ordered by the king to recruit the help of a ninja named Shotan who resides in the coastal settlement of Chiopu. Once he arrives, however, the ninja is nowhere to be found. Only by luck does he happen across him and gives him the 5,000 canu provided by the king, but even this isn't enough. Durane must prove himself worthy of the ninja Shotan's assistance by means of a duel. A fierce battle ensues that sees both men bloodied and bruised, but Durane has done it; he has won the favor of Shotan and has recruited a new ally. They leave the house when suddenly soldiers of the Meluvet military surround them, claiming Durane is instead the traitor Ridman, leader of the Rebellion, and him and his colleagues are wrongly imprisoned in the island prison of Irassia.

After being rescued by a woman by the name of Mikoto who also mistakes Durane for Ridman, the two of them free Durane's other allies and make for the shore to return to the mainland. On the boat ride there, Durane questions his loyalty to his father and ultimately decides to desert him and turn his allegiance to the Rebellion.

At Ceratapin Castle, he makes his new home with the Rebellion and starts doing small tasks for them such as recruiting a master forger by the name of Jubei to help them gain access to the depths of the Garalasian region and wipe their military off the face of the map so that they can turn their attention to Meluvet in the future.

On his travels, he recruits many new allies, one such needs his help protecting his village from a dreadful demon known as Diablos. The elder of this new ally's people, the clan of Genryu, is shocked to find Diablos still alive, but Durane (now going by the name Ridman) tells him to "never give up hope." Suddenly he has a flashback to a memory between Mikoto and Ridman that he shouldn't have if he's truly the Durane he's always known himself to be. A new mystery reveals itself... Who is Durane?

Another mission sends him to destroy an airship fueling station of the Garalasians, but this only slows them down and they must recruit the help of the fabled Dragon Knights to give them wings to meet their enemies in the skies.

With their help, the skies fill with dragons and Ridman and his crew assault the enemy airship, Lodaria. There, Ridman finds a couple claiming to be his parents. It's then that he learns the terrible truth: the man he thought was his father is instead an evil lord who used a mind control device on Ridman when he was very young and stole him away from his birth-parents, turning him against them and against his own people. Ridman is rightfully shocked but comes to understand the truth. The dragons continue to attack the airship and it is felled... Ridman's father doesn't survive.

And just when it seems the day couldn't get darker, Ridman's lifelong friend Eva must answer for her actions, why she turned him away from Meluvet and towards the Rebellion. Once the truth comes out, she draws her sword and directs it towards him. Shocked, he must defend himself against the only friend he's ever had. "Why, Eva?" "Because you know too much." After the conflict, Eva takes up a dagger and impales herself on it. Now she is buried beside Ridman's father and he's lost all that he's ever known.

But in the wake of all this tragedy, Lord Meluvet does not rest. Instead, he's kidnapped the love of the Dragon Knights' commander, Larla, and has taken her to Leviathan's Dwelling. Upon her rescue, a shadowy creature known as Xaertrix reveals itself. It is discovered later that this same creature has the Lord Meluvet in its hand and is indeed the true evil in the world and must be stopped at all costs. By order of the lord of the Rebellion, Ridman is sent back to Seimu to push the Meluvet soldiers out. With them vanquished and the checkpoint to the north cleared, Ridman and the Rebellion push forward to Bargon city to confront Lord Meluvet once and for all.

But what's this? General Regule of Meluvet's military is waiting for Ridman outside of Bargon City! With his army of 5,000 strong, a mighty war breaks out along the wastes of the Bargon capital. Eventually by a stroke of luck Ridman emerges victorious and parades into Bargon City to finish his duties and confront not only General Regule, but his "father" Lord Meluvet.

After the general falls to Ridman's might, Ridman confronts Lord Meluvet only to confirm his greatest fears that Xaertrix is truly behind the king's madness and will stop at nothing to seize control over the entire world! When the king's mortal body falls, he calls out to his master for new strength and becomes a large, hideous creature of pure darkness. The Lord Meluvet beloved by his servants and even Ridman himself is no more and the creature that now takes his place must be felled.

With his defeat, the once more human Lord Meluvet speaks reason to Ridman and commands him to live his life far away from Bargon City, far away from the influence of Xaertrix, and to unite the countries of the world into a peaceful domain.

And thus the first chapter of the Legion Saga closes.
