Sacred Reviews: Dilemma

Introduction

Dilemma was created by MethodicalMermaid using RPG Maker 2003 and is meant to be a game about the concept of choices. Sadly, this game doesn't really live up to this concept in my opinion. This is because your only given one choice that has any impact on your situation. And that is to eat mushrooms. Your only other options are to sit still and do nothing, wander around aimlessly waiting for a rescue that will never come, or drink water until your ready to burst. As such it's hard to recommend taking a look at this project even if it is a rather brief affair since it's not a fleshed out experience for the player.

Visually speaking the game starts out rather plain and off-putting in my opinion. This is the result of many factors in my case but to start with the choice in tile feels a bit off. If the player is trapped in a cave it would make more sense for the tiles to be grey in color in my opinion, and if the player was trapped outside in a pit it would make more sense to include some patches of grass and flowers in order to spice things up a bit. Another issue is that the player is trapped in a room that is unbelievably box shaped.

On the bright side it looks like we were trapped in the cave with a large supply of fly amanita. A mushroom that is known to have hallucinogenic properties. So, I suppose we can assume that all of the events that occur in this game are the result of the player character hallucinating. Though, it does make you wonder why the player character doesn't just keel over from a drug overdose after a while.

Conclusion

While the concept behind Dilemma is interesting. The execution leaves a lot to be desired. As it stands, I'd suggest giving this project a pass.
