Over two hundred years ago, the five heroes defeated the god of darkness; Ragnarok, in a climactic struggle for the fate of the world. Banished back to the realm of darkness known as the Abyss, the threat of the evil god had finally been put to rest once and for all...or so they thought.

Umbral Soul follows the story of Ragnarok’s loyal servant, Pandora, who joins her master in a quest to conquer the world and reclaim his lost power. In order to shroud the world in eternal darkness, they will have to find and recruit new allies, build an army of powerful monsters, and raise a force strong enough to crush anyone who dares to oppose them. Heroes, generals and rival overlords all stand against them. Do you have the power to make the world yours?

A powerful dark sorceress with the ability to call forth monsters from the Abyss and enslave them to her will. Her burning hatred for the world and its people leads her to follow Ragnarok with unwavering loyalty.

The god of darkness, who seeks dominion over the human realm. Once an extremely powerful being in the form of a monstrous demon, he has now been reduced to a mere soul. He wishes to plunge the entirety of the human realm into darkness, in part out of spite for his counterpart; the goddess of light, Lumielle.

Beautiful, deadly, and self absorbed to a tee, Lanith is a succubus with a never ending hunger for the lifeforce of men. Having served under Pandora since she was only a child, she has a knack for getting under her skin, and does so whenever the opportunity arises.

A deeply twisted and sadistic young man, Damien loves nothing more than manipulating others and watching them squirm. While he has kept his true nature a secret, Ragnarok’s uprising marks the perfect opportunity for him to cut loose and have some fun...by killing as many enemies as possible.

The lord of all demons, who is fiercely loyal to Ragnarok and possesses an extreme, seething hatred for humanity. After failing to aid his master in conquering the world the first time, he has no intention of repeating the same mistakes again.

I'm back, baby!

Hey everybody, hope you've been doing well. I'm pleased to say I was just recently discharged from rehab, so at long last after over a month I'm home. They ran a whole lot of tests on me and I had several surgeries, so I am finally no longer in danger of croaking. That means I'm finally free to double down on game development, when I'm not stuck sitting in some doctor's office that is. Thank you all for your well wishes, they went a long way towards improving my mental health through that strenuous time. Welp, that's enough chatter. I've got some game making to do.

I played the game.

You can expect a fully written review around late April.
I am both excited and terrified. I never imagined this game would get so many reviews. I hope you enjoyed your time with it!
Do you have a timetable for when Umbral Soul 'Reverse' will be released?
Uh...not really to be honest, I'm pretty horrible with deadlines. I'm trying to get the reverse campaign, the sequel, and a joint project I'm working on with a friend done by the end of the year, so I can say that much. You shouldn't have to wait too much longer for reverse though. I hope my vague and ambiguous release dates have provided you with a satisfactory answer.
Maybe I'm being dumb, but when I download the game, there is no "game.exe" ; so I can't play it...

Edit : Ok... I just pasted a game.exe from a new project and it seems to work...
Yeah, you're not the first person that's happened to. Certain antivirus programs don't seem to like the exe and delete it, though I an assure you it's safe. Let me know if you have any more trouble!
Had to register to say that was spectacular.

One of the reviews described it as "Story Addiction: the game" and I'd say thats pretty accurate. I found myself taking time away from full big budget commercial games to finish this because I couldn't stop playing. The strength of the premise and the characters was a real hook. I loved Pandora, Lanith, Damien and Grygor (last one is probably abit more two dimensional than the others but he's hilarious and was a main fixture in my party from the minute he started talking). Their cause wasn't just but you could relate to their vulnerability and desire to strike back at the world that broke them.

Layered interesting evil personalities without any last minute redemption plot twists which I was admittedly starting to dread by the end.

Everybody knows the hero's journey, we've seen and played it a thousand times, the stories start to blend together and the thrill of the adventure can start to wear thin when you sometimes feel like you're constantly just repeating history but games like Umbral Soul where you don't really feel like you know where things are going to go, characters that can surprise you and are not afraid to be unlikable or without the best intentions are still rare.

Not sure how I feel about the idea of a reverse campaign since my favorite parts of the game might have very well been when you actually got to take down the cliche band of heroes complete with their cheesy hopeful dialog and banter but I'll definitely give it a shot

Reopened VX Ace for the first time in years and started tinkering around with a random project. I doubt I'll finish anything but this has been a nice reminder of how fun it is to just to mess around with RPG Maker.

Working for Ragnarok was a pleasure. Would leave a good review on Glassdoor.
Hey, what's up Doc! Sorry, I couldn't resist. Thank you for going out of your way to make an account and share your thoughts, I'm always overjoyed to hear when someone has had a good time with the game. It gets me hyped up to polish my skills and create something even better.

Personally I haven't played nearly as many rpgs as most other people, which is probably why I never really grow tired of good ol' traditional tales of good vs evil. Even so, I've always wanted to play from the other side, wielding dark powers and giant monsters while beating the tar out of heroes. I'm glad so many other people share my tastes.

Nice, it's great to see someone have their interest in rpg maker reignited, the things you can do with it are nothing short of amazing. If you ever want to learn how to do something you saw in Umbral Soul or just want to shoot the breeze, feel free to message me. All you have to do is click my name, hit "send user a message", and type away. Thanks again Doc!
Hello, I have recently downloaded this game and have been enjoying it so far, but my save files are disappearing when I close and re open the game. It shows up as an exe file with a blue cube icon in my downloads folder, and opening it there comes up with something about extracting so I have been opening it with WinRAR, where it comes up as a folder with the Game.exe file. I'm not very good at this stuff. Please help me :(
You're actually almost there. Open the folder you mentioned and click the game exe, which should look like a little red dragon head, to launch the game. If the game exe doesn't happen to be there, it means your computer probably deleted it. If that's the case, you can copy/paste a new one from any other vx ace game and it should work just fine. Let me know how you make out.
I launched the game just fine and got about an hour into it, but closing it and opening it again made all my save files disappear.
After a bit of clicking around I got the WinRAR wizard to extract the files for me, and now everything is working properly. Yay!
Huzzah, that's a big relief! Have fun being evil.
This is a good game!

How many monster summons are there in the game? I'm trying to find them all, but there is too much guesswork.

Also, Ragnarok's intro sounds familiar... where is it from? It's eating me alive, but I can't remember where I heard it from. (the light barrier fight emergence Ragnarok intro not the prelude one)
I'm happy you're happy ZH! There are 17 summons in all, not including evolutions. If you need any help finding some of them, shoot me a message, but several of them are unlocked naturally as you progress through the story.

That intro is actually a snippet from a song called "Roar of the Departed Souls"; the final boss theme of Lost Odyssey. The theme that follows that one is called "Battle-Armageddon", and comes from the Rebel Rapture DLC music pack available on steam and rpg maker.com.
It's been ages since I last played Lost Odyssey, but I still don't remember hearing this song from it. Ugh. Anywho, this game is definitely on my list for best rm games ever made.

It's pretty bland mapping-wise, but when it comes to atmosphere, story direction, and mechanics I'd say it's pretty awesome. I'd say I'd buy it if it were available for commercial release, but copyrights and such limits that. I played through the game three times and I'd say ignoring Pandora's comically evil tangent she's a viable anti-hero and her actions make sense. In fact, the true villains are:

Az(barely, as he's just acting out of interest of his subjects), Ragnarok and Samson ( the others are just acting in self defense as being a dark mage is a literal death sentence)

so, I don't think I'd I'm unsure how a sequel to this game would sit with me.

Pandora's party are not villains in my eyes, but neutral evil/ chaotic-good anti-heroes

Whatever you release I'm sure it'd be compelling as you seem to have a natural talent for atmosphere and weaving an interesting tale. Though, there are rough patches of where the dialogue feels camp the overall direction is refreshing.
Uh...wow. Your comment is making me feel very "wow" right now ZH. I still haven't given up on the theory that I've somehow been trapped in the Twilight Zone and all of this is just a really, really long dream. But hey, if that's the case, I hope I never wake up!

Let me tell ya bud, mapping is the bane of my existence and the part of rpg development I loathe the most. It's one of those kinds of things you get better at the more you do it. When I first started tinkering with rpg maker, I made huge empty maps that I actually thought looked good, but as I kept practicing and looking at other's work, my eye became more critical. Looking back it's almost laughable that I had once considered my very first maps passable. The feeling of turning an empty canvas into an actual living breathing world is downright magical though, so it's not all bad. I don't know if I'll ever be able to reach the staggering heights of visual magnificence that games like Star Stealing Prince have attained, but that's my longterm goal. If you shoot for the moon, you'll at least reach the stars, as they say. Wait, do people say that?

Hearing that you'd actually pay money for the game is kind of amazing. I appreciate your hypothetical patronage good sir! Sadly, money always makes things more complicated and like you said, I'd get my pants sued off without replacing 95% of the assets in the game. But hey, that's no big deal, I'm satisfied with simply bringing the story in my head to life while entertaining my fellow gamers. I thought it would be interesting to have the player become invested in both sides of a conflict, adding some tension to the final outcome. It sounds like you're already invested in Pandora's crew, so my job is already half done. As for the other half...well we'll see I can pull it off, though as it stands I'm very pleased with the sequel's story. Not that I'm biased of course... Thanks ZH, I hope you enjoy my future releases just as much!
