Over two hundred years ago, the five heroes defeated the god of darkness; Ragnarok, in a climactic struggle for the fate of the world. Banished back to the realm of darkness known as the Abyss, the threat of the evil god had finally been put to rest once and for all...or so they thought.

Umbral Soul follows the story of Ragnarok’s loyal servant, Pandora, who joins her master in a quest to conquer the world and reclaim his lost power. In order to shroud the world in eternal darkness, they will have to find and recruit new allies, build an army of powerful monsters, and raise a force strong enough to crush anyone who dares to oppose them. Heroes, generals and rival overlords all stand against them. Do you have the power to make the world yours?

Pandora
A powerful dark sorceress with the ability to call forth monsters from the Abyss and enslave them to her will. Her burning hatred for the world and its people leads her to follow Ragnarok with unwavering loyalty.

Ragnarok
The god of darkness, who seeks dominion over the human realm. Once an extremely powerful being in the form of a monstrous demon, he has now been reduced to a mere soul. He wishes to plunge the entirety of the human realm into darkness, in part out of spite for his counterpart; the goddess of light, Lumielle.

Lanith
Beautiful, deadly, and self absorbed to a tee, Lanith is a succubus with a never ending hunger for the lifeforce of men. Having served under Pandora since she was only a child, she has a knack for getting under her skin, and does so whenever the opportunity arises.

Damien
A deeply twisted and sadistic young man, Damien loves nothing more than manipulating others and watching them squirm. While he has kept his true nature a secret, Ragnarok’s uprising marks the perfect opportunity for him to cut loose and have some fun...by killing as many enemies as possible.

Azrielle
The lord of all demons, who is fiercely loyal to Ragnarok and possesses an extreme, seething hatred for humanity. After failing to aid his master in conquering the world the first time, he has no intention of repeating the same mistakes again.

I'm back, baby!

Hey everybody, hope you've been doing well. I'm pleased to say I was just recently discharged from rehab, so at long last after over a month I'm home. They ran a whole lot of tests on me and I had several surgeries, so I am finally no longer in danger of croaking. That means I'm finally free to double down on game development, when I'm not stuck sitting in some doctor's office that is. Thank you all for your well wishes, they went a long way towards improving my mental health through that strenuous time. Welp, that's enough chatter. I've got some game making to do.

Posts

I updated to Dark Rebirth version, transfered the save and finished the game.

There's still a few more bugs I came across

1) Portal to Abyss is not sealed during the final dungeon, this means you can go back to your castle, recruit characters even when you're supposed to be with Pandora alone and 4man the first fight against Athena. What's worse, the two characters you had when you entered the dungeon will be gone from your castle and if you recruit Azrielle, you will be shown once again the scene when he opens the room to the Ebony Cauldron for the first time. Kinda like a time machine. =D
I suppose the easiest fix would be to properly seal the Abyss portal spell when you're in the final dungeon and make sure it doesn't unseal by accident.

2) Slime's final evolution does not have the fluff text if you try to enhance it like other final forms, if you try it, nothing happens. (usually Marcus makes a comment on how awesome that final form is :P). This is minor, but I suppose it's worth noticing.

As for the autorun, what I meant was the Yanfly's system option it has an option (which can be reversed any time in-game), that inverts the function of the shift key. IF auto-run is enabled, then shift will slow you down to walking speed, othrewise it's like normal VX ace, but the max speed is still the same, it's just about not having to hold down shift the whole time.

About retroactively updating characters that are modified by patches without forcing a restart of the game, it can be done with a common event (all in one), run every time you interact with a restoration crystal.
Heck if there's a common event on those crystals already, you could simply slap this code on top of it.
The common event would be like this:

Control Variables: {xxxx} = {Pandora}'s level
Conditional Branch: Variable {xxxx} >= Y (Y is the level where the new skill is learned)
>>>> Change Skills: {Pandora}, + {NewSkill}

Rinse and repeat for every character and every new skill made, but this can all be under the same common event, which would be called every time you used the restore crystal and it would retroactively fix the missing skills for those who transfer the save from older versions of the game without forcing a restart of the game.

For the Chimera's level, in a similar fashion:

Control Variables: {zzzz} = {Chimera's Level}
Control Variables: {zzzz} -= 15
Conditional Branch: {Chimera} is {Final Form} (Monster evolution changes the actor's class, right?)
>>>> Conditional Branch: Variable {zzzz} < 0
>>>>>>>> Change Level: {Chimera}, - Variable {zzzz}

As for the final boss, I'm sorry to say it never felt like a threat, not boasting, I'm being honest :P

Now I have a question for you though. I never got access to the Sullivan Manor, is it there just for decoration or did I miss a sidequest somewhere?

Looking forward to Umbral Souls 2. *winks*
Dasgibsnet- Doh! I added the slime questline toward the end and completely forgot it can be accessed before Damien's battle. I thought I had considered all the possibilities while making this game, but there are so many I hadn't accounted for. Blast, I can think of more than a few ways to make Damien taking control of a slime funny too.

Clangeddon- Abyssal Portal is supposed to be sealed for the endgame, but I think the gloom crystals are removing the sealed state, another factor I hadn't accounted for. Looks like I forgot the fluff text for slime's final form too. Darn, that was a missed opportunity.

Ah, so yanfly's script can be toggled on and off in game huh? I might have to look into that. I think I might've been underleveled when I fought the final boss since I was rushing to finish the game and didn't grind all that much. I'm glad it wasn't too much for you though, but I hope it at least felt a little bit epic.

That idea for the patch is great, I'm just a little hesitant to release yet another version. I don't want to force everyone to download the same game 5 times, but at the same time, I want all of these issues addressed. Aggh, I don't know what to do.

Don't worry, you didn't miss anything. Sullivan manor is not accessible in Umbral Soul. It will be accessible in the sequel however, along with several locations not shown in the game. I've already started working on the sequel, which shouldn't take nearly as long to make. You can look forward to it!
If you want someone to test the sequel for you, I'm happy to offer my services (give me something to do while unemployed that isn't searching for a job and crying myself to sleep! LOL)
please you don't have to update it again, it's fine as it is :D
looking forward to that sequel you are starting to make, sometime in the future

btw if you need an idea for a character ask away :D
Thanks rebel, I don't plan on making the same mistakes I did with the initial release of this game. The sequel will have testers, testers galore! I'll shoot everybody an email when the time comes.

Thanks dgmn, I already have the story and characters all planned out. It will be at least 3 different kinds of epic my friend. At least 3!
Just finished playing the game, wanted to drop a line and say it was amazing. Very glad to hear there will be a sequel.

Two questions (well, 3, but you JUST answered that I can't get into Sullivan Manor no matter what; you have no idea how many times I tried to talk to Miss Sullivan...)

First - if I filled out the full list of scenarios/cutscenes, does that mean I found all the major content? I went through constantly worried I had missed something, seeing how I almost missed several quests along the way, and a number of cities wound up *cough* sort-of destroyed.

Second - and a bit of a spoiler:

I actually beat Athena in the end-game, in the fight with just Pandora and a level 15 Abomination. It turned out Pandy's group healing spell is just enough to (eventually) pull it off, and the not-levelled monster did just enough to out-damage her healing. I did get a nice chunk of XP, but the text afterward made it sound like I lost the fight. Was that intended? Any thought of adding some variant text?

Hey there Varn, glad to hear you enjoyed it! Don't worry, if you've unlocked all the cutscenes, you've pretty much completed all the content the game has to offer. I tried to make all of the sidequest content pretty easy to stumble upon, because I wanted everyone to experience it. There were some intentional loose ends in there to be used as shameless sequel hook bait.

About the end spoiler

I didn't actually expect anyone to defeat Athena before the party arrives, but I suppose the addition of Pandora's healing spell made it possible. I added a little snippet of dialogue during the battle that was meant to convey that the battle was impossible to win with just Pandora, but you must've been seriously well leveled and/or skilled to survive her OP light spells. Now that I know that battle is winnable, some alternate text does sound like a good idea. I'll probably have her full-heal herself like Lilith did.

Just remembered, the Sacred Sanctuary is a sidequest location that doesn't have an unlockable cutscene associated with it. Sullivan Manor is the only location that stays locked the whole game, so if you've been everywhere else and unlocked everything, give yourself a pat on the back!
I'm really enjoying this game and just thought I'd chime in and say that you did an amazing job! :D
Yeah, I found the Sacred Sanctuary. It's good I didn't miss anything major. Though I'm sure I missed a LOT of funny lines; going around Azrielle's castle with different party members was always good for a laugh.

About that last battle:

Yeah, I saw the snippet saying: "Go ahead and give up now" - thing is, it came right after I found the combination that would probably work. Pandora WAS grossly overleveled - 42 I think? I gave her every single Dharc Draught in the game, and she was present all those times I tried levelling up summons. If I replay this someday, I might just treat Lanith as a permanent party member, and neglect all the other summons as much as possible ... certainly wouldn't try to level them all up to 20 or so to see what they learned.
Fernyfer775- Hey thanks man, I'm glad you're enjoying it! To be honest, even the latest version could use some polish here and there, so I'm working on spiffing it up. Just when I think I've gotten all the glitches, another one rears its ugly head. I must achieve perfection!

Varn- Level 42?! Holy moly you must have curb-stomped that boss into oblivion with those stats! I'm actually working on a little something that'll make replaying the game more appealing, but that's all I'll say for now, heh heh heh.

... Oh god n- YES! ... This means I will have to tweak my ass around the entirety of the enemy sets again though.... or I could play vanilla for once.... Nah. (Athena with 1-1,8k aeo's standart and top damages of 4k on one (I think her base magic power is 450 now...+50% when she goes Super Sa- er I mean "rage" mode.) is kinda my style with bulky villains ^_^)

Though I would really like to see what you are planning to do about replay value with one animation list as full as yours... maybe hidden extra bosses? Alternative story line? New Monsters somehow~? Slice of life story focus with lilith and gramps ragnarok? Limiting party member selection? New Script gimmics? Oh well wonder I may and still will for a while, at the end i shall know once a new version will be released xD

I've always found the concept of a game where you are the villain to be interesting and appealing to me. I just have to say this game delivers on pretty much all that I hoped it would be. The characters are great as villains and even empathetic, you don't feel as if these people are just evil for the sake of being evil, even if they seem to go much go that route occasionally. The back stories and flashbacks that the player can view only serve to make the characters seem more realistic and interesting. I absolutely love this game.

I've only have one complaint, that I have no idea where to get all of the "scenarios". I have unlocked all of them but one. The the third one, the one between "Marcus and the Dark Mage" and "An Insatiable Hunger part 1". I have completed the game and have no idea what I missed or where I would of missed it. Unfortunately, I have no save far back enough that I can even go and look. It's driving me mad thinking about it since I have completed the game and enjoyed it, and I just have that one scenario that I can't unlock without starting the game all over again, and I have not a clue where I could find it even then. I would have to search the entire game all over again. :(
Soooooooooo.....what should i do if the game launcher doesn't come with the download? I downloaded the no-RTP version and the launcher is nowhere to be found, and for some reason when i try to download the RTP version the download crashes when it's lasting 1 sec or so. I don't know if this is a bug or something that i don't have in the moment, but i really want to play the game, it appears fantastic.

Try something where you may get your baked stuff for breakfast regularly... it feels quite out of place. You would have it naturally if you had every monster... try to take marcus around and talk to everything that may seem suspicious... if I remember right, you may just get what you seek if you look for it... ;)
Kodek- Have no fear, the geek squad has arrived! I just downloaded the "no rtp" version of the game to test if it was working right, and everything seems in order. After downloading, the game should appear as a little blue crystal-looking icon. When you double click it, it should extract everything to a new folder called "Umbral Soul (Dark Rebirth). Open that folder and click on the dragon head, then the game should start up. Please let me know if you have any more trouble, and have fun!

theangryginger- I'm glad you're enjoying the characters and various stories, they were a lot of fun to create. That particular scenario is unlockable for the entire game, so as long as your only save isn't during the final battle segment, you should still be able to get it. Sounds like there's a sidequest in Vallwin you have yet to unlock. If you explore enough, it should be pretty easy to stumble upon.

Being the villain for a change sounds fun - and I admit it actually is sometimes. But seriously, this game more often than not makes me feel really terrible about my actions, especially when they involve unleashing the latent evil within potentially good people. The writing in those scenes is very impressive, and if it weren't for the huge amount of comic relief through the tons of flavour text, this game would be genuinely depressing (not necessarily in a bad way, of course).

There's quite a few smaller issues here and there, mostly mapping errors, small oddities in the combat system, and of course typos. I do want to report one more severe bug, though: If you leave the Abandoned Tower to go back to the world map, and do so by using the rightmost tile of the road, you get transferred into a river on the world map and can't move any more.
(If this has already been reported by someone else, I apologise for wasting your time.)

If I see any more game-breaking bugs, I'll make sure to let you know right away. Until then, it's back to being a horrible person for me, I guess.
Thanks for the heads up NS, this is why I wanted to hold off on releasing another version just yet. I'm working on finding and squashing all the little bugs and spelling errors, but it's a lot to do myself. The bug reports I've been receiving from players have been tremendously helpful, so I appreciate your assistance.

While I had begun working on the sequel, I have something special planned for the future of this game and want to take some time to spiff it up. A word of advice; embrace the horribleness, my friend. Embrace it!

Also dasgibtesnet, there's no way I'm hiring you as my game balance coordinator. You'd probably give the slime Sigil of Oblivion and quadruple its stats.

The sequel truly shall bring this darkness onto new heights I bet.... Up or down below who knows but I bet it will be interesting at least... ;)

Tch if I had attempted to apply for the job you would have broken my heart just now... how evil.... And I wouldn't have. Probably. My ideas for the slime were different. And if Athena without knowing her boosted moves and fountain of light gets me the reaction, than I don't wanna know what you would say to a 45min hero fight... *cough*

To the slime:

I only would have given the slime:
HP 2500
Atk 50
Def 40
Mdf 40
MAT 50
AGI 1

Intercept (With Substitute Flag) useable every 10 turns working for 5 turns
Splatter
Tentacle Crusher
Tentacle Fury

+ 5% HP Regeneration
+ 2 TP Regeneration

(To be fair my damien can attack once he reaches 50% HP and has according states...)

With a comment on why the slime is this strong from Damien... '_'
At least that's what I planned to start with...
