Over two hundred years ago, the five heroes defeated the god of darkness; Ragnarok, in a climactic struggle for the fate of the world. Banished back to the realm of darkness known as the Abyss, the threat of the evil god had finally been put to rest once and for all...or so they thought.

Umbral Soul follows the story of Ragnarok’s loyal servant, Pandora, who joins her master in a quest to conquer the world and reclaim his lost power. In order to shroud the world in eternal darkness, they will have to find and recruit new allies, build an army of powerful monsters, and raise a force strong enough to crush anyone who dares to oppose them. Heroes, generals and rival overlords all stand against them. Do you have the power to make the world yours?

Pandora
A powerful dark sorceress with the ability to call forth monsters from the Abyss and enslave them to her will. Her burning hatred for the world and its people leads her to follow Ragnarok with unwavering loyalty.

Ragnarok
The god of darkness, who seeks dominion over the human realm. Once an extremely powerful being in the form of a monstrous demon, he has now been reduced to a mere soul. He wishes to plunge the entirety of the human realm into darkness, in part out of spite for his counterpart; the goddess of light, Lumielle.

Lanith
Beautiful, deadly, and self absorbed to a tee, Lanith is a succubus with a never ending hunger for the lifeforce of men. Having served under Pandora since she was only a child, she has a knack for getting under her skin, and does so whenever the opportunity arises.

Damien
A deeply twisted and sadistic young man, Damien loves nothing more than manipulating others and watching them squirm. While he has kept his true nature a secret, Ragnarok’s uprising marks the perfect opportunity for him to cut loose and have some fun...by killing as many enemies as possible.

Azrielle
The lord of all demons, who is fiercely loyal to Ragnarok and possesses an extreme, seething hatred for humanity. After failing to aid his master in conquering the world the first time, he has no intention of repeating the same mistakes again.

I'm back, baby!

Hey everybody, hope you've been doing well. I'm pleased to say I was just recently discharged from rehab, so at long last after over a month I'm home. They ran a whole lot of tests on me and I had several surgeries, so I am finally no longer in danger of croaking. That means I'm finally free to double down on game development, when I'm not stuck sitting in some doctor's office that is. Thank you all for your well wishes, they went a long way towards improving my mental health through that strenuous time. Welp, that's enough chatter. I've got some game making to do.

Posts

Since that particular puzzle seems to be giving people a lot of trouble, I've removed the last two notes for the ultimate edition. I'll also include the solution in the walkthrough so I won't have to pay Elvario for tech support anymore.
For the sound puzzle, you have to think of the notes like the sound of an actual keyboard.
I thought about the notes internally and that helped. Also you could, A. record the sound on your phone and play it back that way, download a keyboard app and try to mimic the pattern, or just sing the notes out loud and memorize them.
Hey Wheels, got an idea here.See if you like it.
Instead make Rosalin one more summon have her as permanent character.
I know you made interaction events with just 5 characters included Pandora in the party. But since Rosalin and Fire Demon have kinda same personality and hate each other you could make the player have just one of the 2 in the party using the same textbox for whichever character.
I believe it would not need much edition i guess?

Oh BTW, i don't know if you noticed but last form of chimera says it caps at LV 15 when it actually caps at 99.
the games has limeted to shops that suck and how ragna can talk to pandora we cant see it
Here's part 11,12 and 13 of my let's play. In which I explore the different places of the world, and embark on some side quests (and a little bit of grinding)
There will be one more sidequest video after these, and then we will continue into the Abyss.

Hope you have fun watching! ^_^

rhb84- Note to self. Cross off "annoyingly difficult sound puzzle" from the checklist of my next rpg.

Bungholio- Thanks for the tip off about the chimera, bro. Being a completely unreasonable perfectionist, I'd want to write entirely new dialogue for Rozalin if I were to make her a permanent character, which would mean adding at least another 16 scenes to the game based on the player's party combination. In hindsight, I do wish there was a way to give Rozalin more screentime, since she's one of my favorite characters.

guillaume- Shops, weapons and armor are all crutches for weak heroes, so I made them intentionally bad. A real villain can claim victory using their own resources, and their own strength.

I almost forgot. Ragnarok can speak to anyone telepathically through their darkness, much in the same way Lumielle used to speak with humanity.

Owmeeye- Ha! Wow, you're really getting into the world, aren't you? I've spotted some more glitches thanks to your let's play, which I've already fixed for the next version. Thanks again for posting this awesome series.

Wait, I was supposed to be paid for this? In that case...

I suggest that you make a lot more puzzles for the sequel, and I suggest you make them as complicated as possible instead. Oh, you can even call it Turbidus Soul.

Yeah, I've gotten quite into it, the game is very engaging. It's possibly the best rpg maker game I've every played, out of a 100 or so. And as for what I've seen so far, right now I feel out of all similar styled rpgs the only ones that I still feel are better are chrono trigger and golden sun, but your game is quite close behind. The writing in your game is quite phenomenal, but what really makes a masterpiece is all the little touches that most people miss in creation.

All the little details, like letting me skip walking when I finish a boss (and often I'm still asked about it), when I defeat the quest and then the book becomes my weapon. The puzzles which are just the right size, grinding which is done in a fun and engaging way, battles don't take too long or too short. Different locations on the map having hero's graves and memorials. All the little story elements which flow one from another in a logical way, a little girl who talks about her imaginary friend, but then you meet the boy who is not imaginary. The writing is excellent, the music really fits the scenes.

The maps are full of details yet they aren't needlessly spacious, but they aren't tiny either, it's all really well polished. It's done in nice, subtle way as well, the necromancers who gradually become insane and kill their friend, but then in the dungeon we have this ghost who is trying to posses pandora multiple times, it feels like it is that killed girl. We have these souls deteriorating but trying to hold on. We have nicely set up skills, like having a special skill which takes lots of TP but lets you freeze bosses for a short while. We have these really dramatic backstories and visions of the past. We have a party full of creatures which feel very unique and with unique skills, a wasp which is defensive, or a succubuss which has skills that only work on males. And then we get that really cute scene with pandora's and lanith's and bed stories. The flavor, the detail, damn, even stuff like having little ceiling lamps (?) in classrooms.

Or the fact that a nun from earlier revisits me and stops me on the way to the school to point me towards a side-quest, it's wonderful detail. For that matter, I have not yet felt lost at any point of the game, you do a wonderful job at leading me along the way, while still allowing me to roam around to a degree. Never felt lost, and the puzzles were never too long or to tedious so far, and that is not an easy thing to do.

I've been enjoying a lot about this game, and I've been enjoying this game loads. Probably the only thing that I'm missing in this game is some elaborate crafting systems which would let me use all those items that I'm gathering from monsters, because I really love crafting systems... I loved that about rune factory.

Haha, chrono trigger wins when it comes to writing/plot ;p but that's a pretty high bar there. Yes, I just compared to chrono trigger :D. And golden sun has worse writing than your game (but it scores points for stuff like, allowing me to use skill to read people's minds and hidden thoughts and doing all sorts of other fun stuff), more importantly it has better puzzles, golden sun had some damn good puzzles, if a bit on the tough side. Your game is really well written, and writing is always very important for my engagement. It may not be chrono trigger, but it is still an amazing game! Your dramatic writing is absolutely excellent, and excellently combined with music as well. What I'm saying is, your game is comparable to my two fav rpg's of all times! I think it's that's good. You went well beyond a "good" game. This depth of detail and effort is a rarity.

Hmm, the fact that the characters really are evil and tend to be massive assholes does tire a little over time, but it is at the same pretty refreshing to have and the excellent writing makes counteracts this. I do wish at times the game would give me more control and stop with all the "but thou must" from Ragnarok whenever I want to check some place out. But the excellent writing, again, counteracts this, as well as the enjoyment of playing with all the different summons and their different abilities. The amount of work and effort you put into this game is phenomenal! Also, it seems like your game is reaaaaaly long, no idea how long this game is, but, it seems like I'm still far away from the end (currently at the school of magic / tower with golems)

I will have yet to see how the story unfolds and where it will go to. As of right now I think I'm something like 25 hours into the game, and I only want to play even more.
Man, where do I even start? Ok Wheelman, just breathe. You got this. *Ahem* Actually, this response is super long. I'm talking long-winded blog post long. I'm going to put it under this convenient little tab here.

What I find fun
So! When I was making this game, I tried my hardest to include all of the elements I enjoy most in rpg's, while excluding the ones I dislike. Backtracking long distances for example: not fun. Getting poisoned and watching your character's HP sink like a stone outside of battle: also not fun. What I do think is fun is interacting with all sorts of interesting people and objects, which is why I made almost everything in the world have a little flavor.

Sidequests
Thanks to Majora's Mask, I've also become fond of sidequests that have interesting/epic stories behind them. Many times during development I thought to myself, "Not everyone is going to see this, but what the hey! I'll spend 12 hours working on it anyway!" It seems like a lot of people have been finding all the sidequests though, so it looks like they paid off in the end.

Puzzles
Truth be told, I'm not a puzzle fan. Some of the game's I've enjoyed the most have been marred by horrible, game-halting puzzles and mini-games.(I'm looking at you, Ocarina of Time water temple.)For that reason, I decided to include only those puzzles I personally found fun. (Although there is one that has been coming back to bite me repeatedly.)

Unlimited Power!
But what I love most about rpg's is feeling powerful. That exciting rush you get when you overlevel and crush a boss like a month-old saltine cracker. That's why I added the summoning system, so that you would not only be able to play as boss-like creatures, but you would have an army of them at your fingertips, giving you a boatload of combat options. All of the main characters are meant to feel overpowered in their own way.

Mini-Mapping
While studying the maps of some of the most visually impressive rpg maker games I've come across, I noticed that their worlds consisted of many smaller detailed maps linked together rather than a single large map filled with details. Copying that style made mapping a lot easier, and I found that adding fog and lighting effects made very simple maps seem more advanced than they were.

Feeling like a Villain
About the whole crafting thing, I figured that gathering resources for weapons and armor was more of something a hero would do. I wanted playing as a villain to feel completely different. You don't help people. You don't use shops. Items are a joke. You don't forge armor. All you do is recruit more allies to your cause and train your boss monsters so they can eat everyone who tries to oppose you. You grow into an unstoppable force, slowly growing your own strength, because when you're an overpowered villain, you don't need anything else.

The legendary Rpg's
Funny story, I've never actually played Chrono Trigger or Golden Sun (please don't hurt me, I bruise easily). I do know however, that they are legendary names in the rpg universe, so the thought of you comparing my game to them is just...mind blowing. Seriously mind blowing! I am legitimately freaking out here! Thank you so much! I have to try those two games sometime in the future. I tried Chrono Cross, but I heard it wasn't as good as Chrono Trigger.

Evil for evil's sake
So even though I went out of my way to show that Pandora and her cohorts are generally pretty terrible people, I tried to show that they had softer sides as well, and were turned dark by their circumstances. I really wanted to avoid creating villains that were evil for no reason, and had their own reasons for acting the way they do. Even Ragnarok has his reasons for being an uptight tyrannical little ball of malice, but they aren't actually revealed in this game.

Thank you!
So yeah, you're still pretty early into the game and you have a ways to go, but I think you'll enjoy the ride up until the end. Thank you for all those wonderful compliments, and for sharing your joy with me. If you have any questions, I'm just a few clicks away.
ragnarok isevil because he born from bad fellings and why talon have not really personnality and is ragnarock ave a sof side and what is your impirason to create charac backstory why did you create senarios and is the etos sanctuary will be in sequel to whellman zero
Yes, being made of evil has a tendency to make you a bit of a jerk, but Ragnarok has his reasons for wanting to swallow the world in darkness. He doesn't really have a soft side, though. Talon doesn't have much screen time, so his personality doesn't have that much of a chance to shine. You will get to know him a bit better in the sequel however.

Unlike a lot of elements in the game, I didn't really draw from other sources when it came to writing the backstores,at least not consciously. They just kind of popped into my head. The scenario's were a way to add depth to the characters without forcing the player to sit through hours of cutscenes. The backstories and character development are there, but whether or not you want to see them is up to you.
Ethios Sanctuary will indeed play a role in the next game.
this game was and without hesitation the most entertaining, fun, and exciting rpg maker game i have ever played so far which makes it also the best on my list, i couldn't believe you could jump with excitment while playing an rpg maker game but it seems i underestimated what people can do and especially you "wheelman", your game was a straight out masterpiece in my opinion and i can't wait to see what you will suprise us with in the future, i bet your next game will be the new first place holder on my list.you have my full support friend! keep going.
Sheesh, and just when I thought I couldn't get any happier after Owmeeye's comment. You guys are just the best. Thanks for the shoutout hakataki, it's great to hear you had such a good time!

It really is amazing how much untapped potential rpg maker has. I mean, with a little imagination and some work, you can make an rpg about just about anything. While the base engine is somewhat limited, there are thousands of scripts out there that expand its capabilities to the point that you can do almost whatever you want. Got a story you've always wanted to tell? Make it an rpg! The possibilities are simply mind-boggling.

Speaking of mind-boggling, I'm astounded that you would hold my game in such high regard. I have a lot of ideas for games I'd like to make in the future, so don't you worry, there's much more to come. This story will be continued in the sequel, so you can look forward to seeing all the characters make a return.

Thanks for the kind words and support, they really mean a lot to me. I'm so pumped for game making right now!
Hi! Just finished your game, and I wanted to say that it was extremely amazing. This just took the top spot as my favorite RPGMaker game ever, and that's no easy feat since I've played some really, really good ones. I'm already excited to play the sequel, and I'll certainly be giving the ultimate edition a shot.

I haven't scrolled through all of the other comments, but any chances that Lanith will return to play a major role in the sequel? I'm sure she'll be there, but I admit I'm going to dreadfully miss her if she's not playable. She was just one of those characters who really grew on me. (I couldn't stand her originally) So great job on doing that particular aspect really well!

I'm also one of those crazy people who managed to defeat Athena during the first round around level 28~ I managed this through good use of double infernal awakening and Sadistic Lash and being really, really careful with my healing. Really damn tough battle!

One final question. I've beaten the entire game, and yet I'm still missing the very last 4 scenarios/cutscenes you can view when activating the bed. Any chance I could get a hint/some help? I'm really stumped at the moment.
Whoa, that's quite the compliment! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the game, Sandrack, I still can't get over how much people are enjoying it.

Major spoilers ahead. All ye who have not completed the game, turn back now.

In the sequel, you'll be playing as heroes attempting to undo everything you did in this game. All of your previous allies and summons will become bosses, including Lanith. Sadly that means you won't be able to play as them anymore, but the characters you do play as will have some interesting abilities to mess around with.

You beat Athena too?! How do you guys keep doing that? Even I couldn't beat her! Good thing I gave her an exp drop.

By the sound of it, it seems like you missed a sidequest. If you have a save before you entered the capital city, head back to Arcfall and talk to the black-haired woman in front of the inn to kick it off. It will lead you through a series of quests that will unlock the final 4 scenario's.

I hope that answered all your questions, and feel free to ask more if you have them. Thanks again for playing my game, bud!
BUT IF THE HERO TEp temp to destroy what the acoythesw it nonsence besause the acolyth did noting we can change apcept the poison barrer than not logic and i taught joel wll fllw lumielle so he dont want kill acolythes and why marcus fellow ragnar if he feel bad about kill people and evil stuff and his goal is the samelle as lumielle wtf there will be how many boss question to wheelmanzero anser me by email
Managed to find all of the final scenarios with your help, thanks!

Anyways, everything was great, the game has some grammatical issues but I'm sure several people pointed that out already. Oh and there are some mapping issues inside the bandit den in North Pass (you can walk on treasure and shelves and whatnot) but asides from that, very much glitch free, good job.

I think if I were to suggest anything it'd be two things. One would be to have a 'superboss' a kind of optional boss for people to have a true challenge against. Those are always fun, and overall the difficulty curve of the game is a bit low, which isn't necessarily a bad thing! Focusing on the story is important too. But yeah, I only ever had a party member die once, and it was during the Athena fight. The one you're not supposed to win. >.>

My other suggestion would be a New Game + mode, just to be able to replay through the game with an absurdly powerful party (keep that exp from the final boss!) and mess around, maybe try some summons you haven't yet and whatnot.

Other than that, nothing I can think of. I hope the sequel will manage to keep the story just as interesting. I believe Umbral Soul's strongest point is that it tells an atypical story, often JRPG tell the story of the bad guy, sure, but inevitably at some point they turn around and become good guys and that just gets... Boring. I'm glad the storyline stuck to it's guns with this one, while still giving the characters plenty of personality.

But yeah, I'm just worried that a typical story about heroes saving the world won't be nearly as entertaining. But perhaps you can manage it! I look forward to it either way, good luck!
guillaume- All of those questions will be answered in the sequel. If you were to know everything now, it would suck all the fun out of the next game. I'm not sure how many bosses there will be since I haven't counted them, but trust me, there will be a boatload.

Sadrack- Phew, I thought maybe you had saved in the capital and locked yourself out of the rest of the world map. I hope you enjoyed the scenario's and that last sidequest. A lot of the grammar mistakes have been corrected, and I think I've exterminated nearly all of the "thier's". That tip about the bandit's lair is new though, I'll have to check that out.

I'd say a superboss sounds like a great idea, I just have to think of something "super" enough for the player to fight. For the next version, I've made several enemies more difficult, while increasing the accessibility of gold and exp. Pandora's healing spell will also be removed, which will drastically change the way you fight.

I considered adding a new game+ before, but then I realized it would be an eventing nightmare. I can't think of a way to do it that wouldn't completely glitch up the game. Yanfly has a script for it, but it requires his save script as well, and I really don't want to ditch Moghunter's save script. It's a shame though, because I love games where you can start over with all of your gear.

Your concerns about the sequel are definitely warranted. It would be a shame to end this story with a bland, generic tale. The deciding factor that will make this story different however, is the characters. In the sequel, you will (hopefully) find yourself getting attached to characters on both sides of the conflict.

In a usual rpg, you find yourself going up against a boss and thinking to yourself "Oh look, a generic dragon. Time to beat its face in!" In Luminous Soul however, you'll find yourself thinking "Oh look, it's Draconus; the dragon I spent an entire game raising. What? I actually have to fight him?!" The power that you nurtured will be turned against you. The characters you've come to know will become your enemies. In Luminous Soul, there will be no such thing as a generic boss, because all of them have depth of character to a certain extent.

Of course, even with that being said, I have no intention of writing typical generic hero story. There will be plenty of dramatic moments, epic bosses, and new scenarios to keep you engrossed in the world. In the war of good vs evil, you'll be invested in both sides instead of simply cheering for the heroes. Overall, I don't think you'll be disappointed, as I have a lot of exciting ideas planned for the future. I hope you'll join me, and thanks!

i think the acolythe will are too cheam a mean azzy who can kill evrebody with marcus who create gigatic storm ect there too cheater i wonder if joel team has a beat the acolythe personally i think they will faill but who know imamid my favorite part is when i faught heroes n water i beat team in trhee turn heroes is easy as slime. temple the irony is i hate water aera in vedo games xd and i image a epic boss vs the slime xd and you cant give charcther same importance in story there too many with seneriaos and present thant confusd i try to create timeline but it complicated with less information of heros xd
Ah yeah, I understand the concept about New Game +, I've dabbled in RPGMaker coding a bit before, and I can definitely see why it'd be a nightmare.

No healing spell for Pandora anymore huh? I can see how that'd change the whole dynamic since she was effectively my main healer. Without her doing that, I might finally have an excuse to use Demora! Yay. I loved her, but since Lanith was so devastating and I already had a healer, I couldn't justify taking Demora with me.

I look forward to seeing the difficulty changes made in the ultimate edition, for sure, and I'm glad to hear that you share the same concerns as I do over the sequel's storyline. It's good to be self-aware when it comes to these kind of things, it'll definitely help with the quality of the game and the writing.

Oh and I'm the type of person who usually keeps several backup saves. So no worries there! I learned the hard way.
