Over two hundred years ago, the five heroes defeated the god of darkness; Ragnarok, in a climactic struggle for the fate of the world. Banished back to the realm of darkness known as the Abyss, the threat of the evil god had finally been put to rest once and for all...or so they thought.

Umbral Soul follows the story of Ragnarok’s loyal servant, Pandora, who joins her master in a quest to conquer the world and reclaim his lost power. In order to shroud the world in eternal darkness, they will have to find and recruit new allies, build an army of powerful monsters, and raise a force strong enough to crush anyone who dares to oppose them. Heroes, generals and rival overlords all stand against them. Do you have the power to make the world yours?

Pandora
A powerful dark sorceress with the ability to call forth monsters from the Abyss and enslave them to her will. Her burning hatred for the world and its people leads her to follow Ragnarok with unwavering loyalty.

Ragnarok
The god of darkness, who seeks dominion over the human realm. Once an extremely powerful being in the form of a monstrous demon, he has now been reduced to a mere soul. He wishes to plunge the entirety of the human realm into darkness, in part out of spite for his counterpart; the goddess of light, Lumielle.

Lanith
Beautiful, deadly, and self absorbed to a tee, Lanith is a succubus with a never ending hunger for the lifeforce of men. Having served under Pandora since she was only a child, she has a knack for getting under her skin, and does so whenever the opportunity arises.

Damien
A deeply twisted and sadistic young man, Damien loves nothing more than manipulating others and watching them squirm. While he has kept his true nature a secret, Ragnarok’s uprising marks the perfect opportunity for him to cut loose and have some fun...by killing as many enemies as possible.

Azrielle
The lord of all demons, who is fiercely loyal to Ragnarok and possesses an extreme, seething hatred for humanity. After failing to aid his master in conquering the world the first time, he has no intention of repeating the same mistakes again.

I'm back, baby!

Hey everybody, hope you've been doing well. I'm pleased to say I was just recently discharged from rehab, so at long last after over a month I'm home. They ran a whole lot of tests on me and I had several surgeries, so I am finally no longer in danger of croaking. That means I'm finally free to double down on game development, when I'm not stuck sitting in some doctor's office that is. Thank you all for your well wishes, they went a long way towards improving my mental health through that strenuous time. Welp, that's enough chatter. I've got some game making to do.

Posts

Thanks Wheelman, for this game. With the unusual plot of letting us be the antagonists in the story, you created something that, at times, made me feel conflicted.
Especially the exchanges between Pandora/Lianna and Serene made me wish for a way to make Pandora turn her back on Ragnarok. The Serene Grace scenes even made me consider to stop playing the game.(Thanks for the somewhat mild treatment Serene got in the end. That way I can at least imagine that she might free Pandora from her anguish eventually)

That said, I believe I found some bugs:
In the temple of Aquarius, when you attempt to back-track, trying to leave the maze always makes you end up in the room with the dead monster yelly(So basically, both exits of the maze lead to the same location)

The pocket dimension created by the betrayer can be exited and re-entered with Pandoras portal ability. It is then possible to add an additional character to the team. This causes some weirdness, where you can't switch some characters because there they are already in the team but cant fight.

Lastly, there is still a character (probably left over from testing) next to the door for the second fight with athena. Said character says nothing but allows bypassing the door seal.

I also noticed some inconsistencies in the story:
In the Aquarius temple, Pandora thanks the heroes 'for
placing the shard in my hands', meaning she took it with her(Which makes sense, since all of them are needed for the weapon Reginald wants to make; So taking just one of them away ruins that plan).
However, at the hostage exchange, the heroes suddely have all 5(there is no mention of Pandora taking the one from the Aquarius temple with her).
For dramatic effect, it makes sense for things to play out as they did but this seems like a clear plot hole to me(which could be rectified by Pandora taking her shard with her and adding it to the other 4 right there).

Before the second battle with Athena, she claims that she escaped thanks to the other people locked inside with her, but it's never explained how that would work(They are locked inside with the miasma, which weakens/blocks her powers and it's mentined that not even a dragon would be able to break through that barrier).
Also, she demands Pandora lifts the barrier and free those trapped inside but they should all long be dead by now. After all, Pandora estimated they would last 5, maybe 10 minutes in the Miasma and the whole Tournament(and potentially the whole qualification) as well as the attempted hostage-exchange happend since then(meaning at least hours but most likely days have passed since then).

Lastly, the spelling is quite distracting at times. Especially 'thier' is a repeat offender here.

Anyway, good job on this game, did you really make it on your own?
Whoa, thanks bud! Yeah I made this game on my own, but I did get a lot of helpful suggestions on how to improve it, like yours for instance. You'd be surprised what you can do with some time, patience, and motivation. Of course my soloing this project did result in a bunch of issues I missed leaking through. Well never again I say. Next time I'm having playtesters. Playtesters out the wazoo!

I'm glad Serene and Pandora's conversations had the impact on you that they did. The way you felt about them was exactly what I was aiming for. Don't worry though, the story's not over, so I don't plan on leaving you hanging.

Ah yes, the glitches; the bane of my existence. So baneful in fact, that I decided a while ago that I would no longer tolerate their presence. Every last bug will meet its end at the tip of my mouse. That's why I'm releasing a revamped version of this game with all the glitches and spelling errors fixed, along with a bunch of new content. I wouldn't feel comfortable walking away from it otherwise.

Spoiler because spoi- Bah, you know the drill!

I had thought about Pandora's not taking the shard with her being dumb before, but the way I have things planned it actually needs to happen that way. Villains make incredibly stupid mistakes that lead to their inevitable downfall on a near constant basis, so I figured I'd chalk it up to an error in judgement. If villains were smart, they might actually be dangerous!

I'm glad you thought Athena's explanation for escaping was incomplete, because the truth is, it IS incomplete. The details of how she and the villagers lasted that log in the miasma, as well as exactly how she made her escape are revealed in the sequel. I left a bunch of cliffhangers and half-finished stories in the game so they could be wrapped up in the sequel. I hope you'll join me for it.

And I think that just about does it. Thanks for the comment 4normaly, you just brightened up my day.

Thanks for the fast reply WheelmanZero
I don't think the 'Villains make incredibly stupid mistakes' explanation really works here. After all, the whole goal of intercepting the heroes was:'stop the good guys from getting all the shards'.
Allowing them to carry on collecting them poses the risk of them handing them over to the king anyway.
So I maintain that it would be more reasonable that Pendora is stupid enough to take her shard with her for the meeting of the heroes instead of letting them have the Aquarius one.
And even if she were to leave the Aquarius shard for them, it should at least be mentioned(instead of just assumed) to avoid confusion.

Another thing I noticed about the Aquarius temple, is that the entrance is opened by Serene using that orb. This allows the conclusion that only Serene is capable of using that orb to allow passage into the temples. Which in turn would make the heroes quest to receive the other 2 shards an impossible one.
And speaking of the temples, it is mentioned the heroes already visited 2 temples and the Aquarius one is the 3rd. Meaning, they would already have 2 of them at that point(unless they dropped them off at the king's place beforehand, which poses the challenge of convincing him to give it back).

Anyway, I'm glad the story is not over yet and curious how those gaps in the narrative will be filled.
for a prequel there blot question about the world need to e fill like where gods came from or who create world why the war vs dark mage star

For a prequel wheelman that lots anser not question it sem you dont great lot background in your story because i have the feeling to play a segond game in a trilogi strange eeling
This might be a stupid question but is there a way to get the game to actually play? All I have is an RGSS file.
Worry not my friend, for tech support has arrived. If the original download is giving you trouble, click the "downloads" tab at the top of this page and click the third link. That version includes RPG Maker VX Ace's rtp, which is required for the game to work.

Once it finishes downloading, click the file, which should appear as a blue hexagon, and the game will be extracted to a new folder. Enter that folder and click the red dragon head, and you're off to the races. Let me know if you have any trouble.

EDIT: I went ahead and made the rtp inclusive download the main download so no one else runs into the same problem, assuming that was the problem. The non-rtp version is still available on the download page.
hey wheel is yourdevlopment of ultimate progress fine and ow unluc te quest of sanson and te ow unlock last senario in te list please im in te forest act
Things are going quite well, thanks. I've received a lot of great resources from a friend of mine, so I've been excited to show them off. Completing the quest line given to you by the black-haired woman in Arcfall unlocks the last 2 scenarios. Talking to her after you've done so will unlock another one.
Is there a walkthrough or something anywhere? Feel like I'm missing content and would also hope for their to be more than just one ending, a lot of stuff seems openended as far as I've got.
TheMoonlitShadow
the creator will make a guide in a other version and the game is a prequel it need to to put open end to prepare for the sequel when you will play new hero s trie to defeat the villains i hope the ultimate dont take aanther year to release xd
If you've got all the scenarios, you've pretty much gotten all the story content. Like dd33 said, a lot of story arcs were left unfinished so that they could be resolved in the sequel, which is in the works. The improved version of this game, which I'm working on right now, will have a considerable amount of additional story as well as a walkthrough, so there'll be no need to worry about missing anything. Thanks for playing!
This is the first ever rpg maker game that i played, and i dont regret it. The story is very well made, sprites are even better. The whole game is an overall good job to the team that worked on it. Thanks for making such a masterpiece!
Wow, so this was your first rpg maker game? I'm glad I was able to leave a good first impression then. It's incredible what you can do with the engine with a little know-how and some imagination. Thanks for the comment, and welcome to the wonderous world of rpg maker games.

Hey there! First off, I would like to say I really LOVE your game! The pacing, the plot, the character development are absolutely fantastic, and I like that we are playing from the perspective of villains, which is quite interesting! I've been playing a lot of rpg maker games recently and I was growing quite bored until I played yours! Great job :))

Alright, truth be told, I created this account not just to praise your game on how exemplary it is, but also to report a bug as well that happens near the end of the game. I was so close to completing the game but I couldn't find ways to get rid of the bug :(

So in the part where you are in the battle capital, you are supposed to go both east and west to get rid of the sisters that have placed a light barrier over the entrance to the castle. But its the west part I am having problems with, when I reached the top of the tower and enter, the screen just remained black for a long time! I'm sure there was supposed to be a cutscene playing but it didnt play at all. And the only thing you could do was bring up the menu, and use the Abyssal Portal. That seem to trigger another bug-even though Damien is not in my party, I could see him on the menu screen in my party. It's like it stuck there and I can't get rid of it. and yeah that's all the bugs I could find in the game, I hope you have a solution to this because I really want to complete the game :(

Wheel Inc. tech support has arrived! I'll shoot you a message with some questions, but I have a feeling I already know what the problem is.
it mos be hard foryou wheel to create 16 party member comare to the sequel itfour main member plus mabe few guest member how fair are i you team project
Hey Wheelman, amazing game you made here. I've been around the RPG Maker community for a while and I have to say this is one of the best games to come out of it. Not many people manage to finish their epic fantasy projects, let alone make them with this level of quality. Wanted to report a bug tho that I found just recently as I've been replaying. In the Damien fight he grabbed my Chimera and I summoned out the hornet. I decided to kill the Chimera first and burst it down, but as soon as it died the game just crashed. Unfortunately I don't remember what the error code was, but yeah just wanted to bring this to your attention in case you didn't know of it.
