Over two hundred years ago, the five heroes defeated the god of darkness; Ragnarok, in a climactic struggle for the fate of the world. Banished back to the realm of darkness known as the Abyss, the threat of the evil god had finally been put to rest once and for all...or so they thought.

Umbral Soul follows the story of Ragnarok’s loyal servant, Pandora, who joins her master in a quest to conquer the world and reclaim his lost power. In order to shroud the world in eternal darkness, they will have to find and recruit new allies, build an army of powerful monsters, and raise a force strong enough to crush anyone who dares to oppose them. Heroes, generals and rival overlords all stand against them. Do you have the power to make the world yours?

Pandora
A powerful dark sorceress with the ability to call forth monsters from the Abyss and enslave them to her will. Her burning hatred for the world and its people leads her to follow Ragnarok with unwavering loyalty.

Ragnarok
The god of darkness, who seeks dominion over the human realm. Once an extremely powerful being in the form of a monstrous demon, he has now been reduced to a mere soul. He wishes to plunge the entirety of the human realm into darkness, in part out of spite for his counterpart; the goddess of light, Lumielle.

Lanith
Beautiful, deadly, and self absorbed to a tee, Lanith is a succubus with a never ending hunger for the lifeforce of men. Having served under Pandora since she was only a child, she has a knack for getting under her skin, and does so whenever the opportunity arises.

Damien
A deeply twisted and sadistic young man, Damien loves nothing more than manipulating others and watching them squirm. While he has kept his true nature a secret, Ragnarok’s uprising marks the perfect opportunity for him to cut loose and have some fun...by killing as many enemies as possible.

Azrielle
The lord of all demons, who is fiercely loyal to Ragnarok and possesses an extreme, seething hatred for humanity. After failing to aid his master in conquering the world the first time, he has no intention of repeating the same mistakes again.

I'm back, baby!

Hey everybody, hope you've been doing well. I'm pleased to say I was just recently discharged from rehab, so at long last after over a month I'm home. They ran a whole lot of tests on me and I had several surgeries, so I am finally no longer in danger of croaking. That means I'm finally free to double down on game development, when I'm not stuck sitting in some doctor's office that is. Thank you all for your well wishes, they went a long way towards improving my mental health through that strenuous time. Welp, that's enough chatter. I've got some game making to do.

Posts

The following comment is filled to the brim with spoilers. All ye who do not wish to be spoiled, avert your eyes. Avert them with all due haste.

Alright, now that the disclaimer's been given, let's start chipping away at this massive comment of yours. By the time we're done, you'll be so satisfied you'll think you'd have eaten two thanksgiving dinners.

I counted seventeen summons in all excluding the evolutions, so it sounds like you're missing one. From what you've told me though, I have a pretty good idea of which one it is. This also addresses your missing scenario problem, so it looks like we get to kill two birds with one stone.

The scenario in question is a reward for completing a sidequest in Rozalin's castle. After beating the vampire quest, enter the music hall and talk to the singing woman twice to start it. Completing it will net you a scenario and a summon. If you don't want to go through the trouble though, there are a few playthroughs on youtube you could watch.

You know what's funny? I made an interaction for the pillow event for when Demora and Azrielle are in the party, but I completely forgot to make one for Grealda. Well that's no longer true as of this post, so thanks for the tip off.

Yeah the balance of this game is definitely tipped in your favor bigtime, and I downplayed the importance of items as much as I could. Why you ask? Because villains don't rely on items, those are for weak pathetic heroes. Villains use nothing but their own stupidly strong abilities to get the job done. I wanted to replicate that feeling, hence the OPness. I will say however, that I didn't intend Demora to be as broken as she is. "Here, let me just give a full party magic reflect spell to this character in a game where nearly every boss spams magic. What could possibly go wrong?"

Revisiting the final boss I do agree that it was too easy. It doesn't use damaging attacks as often as it should in its second form, seeing as how you have so many party members and options. Unfortunately by the time you get to the final boss you've already kicked all the heroes butts, so the giant angel statue of death is the only thing left to fight. The fight against Athena was meant to be the climax of Pandora's personal gripe with the heroes, but it must have felt underwhelming because of the true goddess of darkness and her OP magic reflect spell.

*wrings hands together* Alright, now it's time to get to the good part. All of the criticisms you've raised are completely valid (except for the evolving Demorea thing), and it is my pleasure to tell you that they will be resolved in the new ultimate edition of the game I'm working on. Here's a list of features.

-Demora's magic reflect now shields 1party member for 2 turns instead of the entire party.

-The Hornet Queen and Hydra Raflessia now have 1 new evolution each

-New skills and animations

-Dark Overclock now costs a large amount of TP to perform

-Several bosses are stronger

- 8+ new scenarios

- Improved maps

-New Sidequests

- 1 new summon

- Alternate campaign where you play as Serene and her allies

I might be forgetting something but those are the features that come to mind. I'm hoping that the game will be a different enough experience for players to want to play through it again, and enjoy some new content with Serene's story. The new version will address a lot of the concerns you had, but I'm afraid I can't deliver on the postgame thing. As much fun as it would be, it would be a massive undertaking, and considering how ridiculously overambitious I am, that's saying a lot.

Phew! Alright, now that that's out of the way let me go ahead and answer all your questions. As you surmised, Astranova is a light element spell and therefore cannot be learned by dark type pokemon, even with a TM. Wait, I think I said that wrong. Whatever, you get the idea! I will say however that this isn't the last you'll see of that spell.

After Serene loses against the Acolytes, she sends all 5 of the shards to Reginald, hence why Aegis is able to be completed. All 5 shards are combined to form Aegis, so when it's destroyed its core is revealed to be the completed crystal of divinity, which the villains corrupt and absorb. This is the last you see of the crystal of divinity, as it is now just a powerless rock whose magic now lives within the Acolytes.

Of course, Pandora doesn't even bother to take the one crystal from Serene's party after she defeats them the first time, since she's so sure they're going to bring her all of them at once. Why? Because overconfidence makes villains make stupid decisions. If villains were smart, they might actually win for once.

When you first enter Reddin Cathedral, the preacher explains that Ragnarok's gloom crystals are blocking Lumielle's connection with earth. They feed on darkness to grow more powerful, hence why the dark mages are being hunted. But do the crystals only draw power from dark mages? Hmm, I wonder...

And last but not least, the final question; "Is there going to be a sequel?" The answer is yes. Umbral Soul is essentially the prologue to the complete story which will unfold in the next game; Luminous Soul. In it, you'll play as a new group of heroes working to undo everything the Acolytes have done. All of your previous allies will return as powerful enemies looking to put you in the ground. Pretty much everyone makes a return, and some dangling story threads are wrapped up nice and tidy. That's why I had to leave certain things up in the air, like the conclusion to Lonnie's story with the wealthy woman. Everyone's stories, for better or worse, will come to an end in the next game.

I think that should just about do it. Let me take a moment to thank you for your posts, as they've got me absolutely beaming right now. Whenever someone tells me they enjoyed my game it hypes me up beyond belief. I look forward to being able to share my future games with everyone as well.
Damn, no maid dark goddesses DP infusions :( I mean, in the balance aspect, I completely agree with you, especially with Demora; but there needs to be a better explanation for not evolving while even a slime could. Maybe like this: We've already seen what evolving does. It will heavily change their bodies and minds and likely make them quite mad. Maybe Marcus would warn them on this, and they would choose not to instead of them exploding due to how weak they are. EDIT2: This would also explain why Azrielle also doesnt ever evolve either.

Demora's magic reflect will still be powerful with that. It will only deal half the damage, but thats still really good(NOT asking for further nerfs here!). And it is still enough to win against Athena unscathed(Though I guess this is still broken). Though even with Demora, Athena fight was exciting. I guess it may be bcs I played with draconus first and alt f4'ed and switched to Demora later.

Though the nerfs seem kinda big. RIP Gryger & Demora ;(,

Oh nice, I guess I gotta update the game.

I guess I got to hold off on my second playthrough till ultimate edition comes out. Really excited for it!

Oh wait, the spells name was astranova, not astravania. THAT ISNT THE LAST OF THAT SPELL? THE SEQUEL! I guess we may be able to learn it after all, a spell enough to defy Ragnarok.

Also, maybe there were indications of this, but i completely forgot if there were any. Did Lumielle try to execute all dark mages, or was that humans fault?(I think it was the latter, but theres still Lumielle's insecurity at the end. I guess not even the goddess of light can be as white as her light.)

And yeah, even light mages DEFINITELY feed Ragnarok. I mean, even Athena is the Angel of Death. Justice though it may be, it still is Ragnarok's realm. I think only one that didnt feed Ragnarok was Serene.

Tbh playing as evil guys made me want to play as good ones again. And Im hyped for the sequel!

Though I might wish to wreak Havoc after a while and replay Umbral Soul again, lol.

Anyway, I absolutely LOVE the scenarios! Just "watched" them all, and they were awesome! Mira's was hilarious, Lanith met with Marcus' father??? and theres so much!

And Serene makes me think that the sequel will be even more interesting. Will Serene's prayer really be heard? I mean, she DID disobey Ragnarok, did not destroy her heart and gave a WHOLE 30 MATK for Lanith. That rage though, that moment was great. Im really looking forward to a COMPLETELY OVERPOWERED Pandora boss fight.

Though, what about an easter egg? Currently, nothing happens if you take anyone to level 99. But what about instant world domination if we take Ragnarok to level 99? Like, some ridiculous event where in that escaping moment Ragnarok suddenly conquers the world? In an event where even Ragnarok is surprised???

Though it may require a lot of effort for a really obscure easter egg you cant get without cheating. But it WOULD be funny.

Luminous Soul? Thats the healing spells name! Kinda fitting the worlds shrouded in darkness. Wait, Umbral Soul. Luminous Soul. DOES it mean?.. Im looking forward to it!

Though I got a quick question for the sequel: Will we have a tamer in our party?

I got so many more questions & speculations but I dont want to spoil it too much, I guess Ill wait patiently till it comes out!

EDIT1: Spoilers. You should play the game before reading these.

You know, maybe you should refresh the page. I made so many edits. Though this will be the last one so I guess thatd be pointless.

Looking forward to this. Thank you Wheel, you are every cool
Caution: Godzilla-sized spoilers ahead.

Your theory about the dangers of demon evolution is right on the money. It doesn't really come into play until the sequel, but absorbing more power than their body can handle will in fact drive a demon mad, in addition to one other highly unpleasant side effect. It's the main reason why demons are careful about how much power they take in, although certain species like succubi have much higher upper limits than others.

This isn't actually mentioned in the story, but Arielle's current form is actually his evolved form, hence why he was so strong before losing to Jeremy's crew. Losing power doesn't cause demons to devolve however, which is why he looked the same even after sacrificing his power to summon Ragnarok.

Athena won't be quite as easy to cheese due to an adjustment I've made, but for those who do manage to defeat her again, I've made it so that cutscene plays out a little differently.

The persecution of dark mages didn't kick in until after humanity lost contact with Lumielle, so she had no say in the matter. At the end of the game, she cries over the current state of the world and blames herself for it, since the dark mages were being hunted as a means of restoring humanity's connection with her. What she wanted from the very beginning is peace between everyone, including the demons.

What people don't realize is that Ragnarok's gloom crystals don't just feed on dark magic, they feed on darkness itself, so the world's hatred for dark mages is actually making the problem worse. While those who kill in Lumielle's name claim to be fighting for her sake, they are unwittingly helping Ragnarok. Oh the irony!

I'm relieved to hear you're up for playing as the good guys again. A lot of players really enjoyed being the baddies, so they were a little bummed out about having to switch sides. I wouldn't make a party I didn't think it would be fun to play as though, and the heroes of Luminous Soul have some unusual members among their ranks. Sadly you don't get to play as a monster tamer, but I do think you'll enjoy the abilities at your disposal. Your party is by no means a group of weaklings. Each and every one of them is powerful, and that fact is reflected in their movesets.

Mild sequel spoiler:

There is a completely overpowered Pandora boss fight. Make sure you have your max elixirs ready. All 99 of them.

Hey, I'm all for easter eggs, but Ragnarok spontaneously becoming all powerful would throw a little bit of a monkey wrench in the story. He'd be all, "Wait...why did I raise this kid for 20 years if I could just do this myself?" Nope, evil gods gotta revive themselves the old fashioned way; through the efforts of their loyal minions.

Thanks so much for the encouraging words you guys. They really mean a lot.
So I made an account here just to post this. I played this game a while back about 3 or 4 years ago, and still to this day it's one of the best games i've ever played. Definitely in my top 3 all time favorites, alongside other masterpieces such as FF3/6 and Chrono Trigger. I heard a piece of music that reminded me of this game a few days ago, and decided to come back and give it another play through again. I'm ecstatic to hear that you're planning on releasing a new ultimate version for it here soon, I can't wait!

I see the game has gotten alot more popular since I last played it, although it's nowhere NEAR what it deserves. I just wanted to say thank you for sharing this awesome creation with us, you're extremly talented and your work is definitely appreciated. I look forward to seeing what's next!

About the new ultimate edition that you're planning on releasing, do you have an estimate of when it'll be done? Not in any rush, just wondering if I should go ahead and do another play through now, or just wait on the ultimiate edition if it'll be out in the next few months
I don't think my brain can fully process this post. I mean I can read the words but it doesn't really sink in that you'd call something I made one of your favorite games. It's been ages since I posted this game, but I still haven't given up on the possibility that this is some kind of really drawn out, overly elaborate hoax designed to give me a heart attack, and that somewhere there's a Discord server conspiring to keep it going.

But just in case that isn't true, let me just say you're welcome! This is the only real instance of me putting something I made out there for the world to tear apart into little pieces see, so I'm glad it went over as well as it did.

I was initially confident that I'd be able to finish the new version by the end of the year, but of course life had other plans for me. That said, it's probably going to take a couple more months before I'm done. I should probably make a big depressing blog post going into the details, but I've been dreading writing it. Do you hear that? That scraping metal sound? It's the sound of people sharpening their pitchforks.

I'd love to give you an exact release date but I'm absolutely terrible at meeting those so I can't make any specific promises. Probably a few more months if nothing else terrible happens. If you can hold out till then, great, but if you can't, I don't think it'll ruin your enjoyment of the newer version, since I've added a lot more bells and whistles. Thanks for the post, it was amazing!
funny you can save the game when you been burn by fire at rallen tower.

i notice we can get a other compagnon in lanith side quest like damien if you switch betwen compagnon after firth visit in sadistic

last in forest of athena there as lot fight compare previus area is that a bug
from everything i have noticed regarding your fans (yes, senpai, you have fans, real, proper fans! and not even the ones of the ventilating kind xD), we would probably prepare blankets and hot cocoa for you instead of pitchforks if you posted a, to quote you, big depressing blog post. we want you happy and healthy, and working on your game/s should be something that brings you joy, not something that causes you stress and negativity. you have already gifted us with an AMAZING game (still my fave rpg maker game ever, after all these years, and i don't see it changing), completely for free, and we have absolutely no right to demand anything from you. please take care of your health, both mental and physical, that is more important than anything else. life is hard already by itself, and these past few years have been... an experience. i definitely can't wait to play the ultimate edition and the sequel, though, i know they will be amazing :3
Sellkadoom22- No worries, I double checked the events and everything looks up to snuff, so while you might be able to regain party members when you return to the castle, they're removed when you go to Sadithis, which you need to head to in order to reach the mausoleum. If there was an issue there, I must have fixed it in the version I'm working on now.

The fire death glitch has been dealt with too. Who would've thought anyone would be crazy enough to open the main menu while in the process of dying? Not this guy, that's for sure. The encounter rates aren't bugged though, so there's no need to worry about that.

gothicmiriel (aka grasshopper)- Yeah, you're certainly right about that. Ever since I joined this community, I've been shown nothing but kindness, patience and understanding from just about everyone I've talked to. I guess that's part of why I'm bummed about failing to meet my deadline. People have been so awesome to me I just want to give back by presenting them with an awesome game as soon as possible, so I end up stressing about things when no one's even cracking the whip at me.

But you know, that's actually pretty dumb and I should just enjoy what I'm doing while making the best experience I can with my current skillset. Things tend to go better when I'm having fun after all.

Alright, you guys have gotten me all hyped up, so I'm gonna go ahead and make that big scary blog post I've been dreading. You've all been awesome, so I've probably been worrying for nothing. Thanks a lot everybody, and especially you, grasshopper. You're a special kind of awesome.
yasss, senpai, that's the right attitude! love to see it ^__^ see ya at the blog post xD and thank you so much for your kind words!! you are the awesome one!
the reply got posted twice, so this can be ignored
i wonder if wheelman has finish his double project whit his friend for berry content.
personal note i notice people talked to you about senpai . why no japenese people use japenese term is strange ps You shoy put the seren god boss much harder
Oh, got a honorable mention in the blog, lol.

Don't worry about it though - I only ever asked about approximates for release anyway, there is no problem it's not coming exactly this year end.

Good luck with your job search and happy coming Xmas/New year :)

I didn't want to leave you hanging, so I thought I'd mention it. I'm sure there were other people wondering the same thing, so you ended up addressing their concerns too. Thanks for being awesome, this site is full of beautiful people. *sniffle*
Hey creator, while you still working at this game I just wanted to give you suggestions so that may interested you to make the game more enjoyable and better because how really great this game already
I don't know if this has been mentioned by anyone before, but if anyone is curious, this game seems to be fully compatible with JoiPlay. The only exception I've found is one boss fight.

When you fight Damien and he takes control of your monster, the game crashes if you beat the monster first. Pretty sure it's the emulator and not the game. Beating Damien before the monster doesn't cause a bug.

Other than that, it's been fun being able to play this on my phone during my breaks at work. The game... isn't what I was expecting, but it is good. There are quite a few flaws (what game doesn't have them?) but there's a lot that's really well executed and isn't seen often in other games. Enjoying it so far!
Oof, yeah I remember that bug. Unfortunately the issue is with the game itself; something to do with the sound effects that play when a controlled summon dies if I remember correctly. I've fixed that glitch and others, but those changes won't go into effect until after I've completed the game's ultimate edition. I hope you can bear with my goof ups until then.

Still, I'm glad you're enjoying yourself in spite of the issues, and it's great to hear that something I made has been able to entertain someone at their job. Man, I wish I knew how to play rpg maker games on my phone. I know all too well how it feels to be bored out of your mind during breaks, and tetris just isn't cutting the mustard anymore. Thanks for giving my game a go, I hope you enjoy it all the way up to the end.

Foo, I'm certainly open to suggestions, so feel free to shoot me an email anytime you like. Thanks for trying to help make the game even better!

Merry Christmas everybody!
there is an emulator for android that supposedly runs most of the rpg maker games with no issue. i have it downloaded, but... haven't even properly tried it out yet, cause i am a terrible procrastinator xD hope we are allowed to post links: https://joiplay.cyou/ it is on google play and has an ok rating, so i don't think it is any kind of scam or anything dangerous (i have notifications turned on for umbral soul, that is why i always pop up here when new comments appear, hope it does not seem stalky xD)
Nah, it's not a scam, JoiPlay is pretty solid. It's legitimately the only way I play my own game now, since my laptop is suuuper slow. It takes a bit to actually get a game on there, you've basically gotta create a separate folder in your phone with the game fully extracted, then select the .exe file when adding a new game from the app, so it pretty much requires you to hook your phone up to a computer and manually set it up, but it's worth it IMO. Still has some bugs though and not every game works on it. But this one does!
