Over two hundred years ago, the five heroes defeated the god of darkness; Ragnarok, in a climactic struggle for the fate of the world. Banished back to the realm of darkness known as the Abyss, the threat of the evil god had finally been put to rest once and for all...or so they thought.

Umbral Soul follows the story of Ragnarok’s loyal servant, Pandora, who joins her master in a quest to conquer the world and reclaim his lost power. In order to shroud the world in eternal darkness, they will have to find and recruit new allies, build an army of powerful monsters, and raise a force strong enough to crush anyone who dares to oppose them. Heroes, generals and rival overlords all stand against them. Do you have the power to make the world yours?

Pandora
A powerful dark sorceress with the ability to call forth monsters from the Abyss and enslave them to her will. Her burning hatred for the world and its people leads her to follow Ragnarok with unwavering loyalty.

Ragnarok
The god of darkness, who seeks dominion over the human realm. Once an extremely powerful being in the form of a monstrous demon, he has now been reduced to a mere soul. He wishes to plunge the entirety of the human realm into darkness, in part out of spite for his counterpart; the goddess of light, Lumielle.

Lanith
Beautiful, deadly, and self absorbed to a tee, Lanith is a succubus with a never ending hunger for the lifeforce of men. Having served under Pandora since she was only a child, she has a knack for getting under her skin, and does so whenever the opportunity arises.

Damien
A deeply twisted and sadistic young man, Damien loves nothing more than manipulating others and watching them squirm. While he has kept his true nature a secret, Ragnarok’s uprising marks the perfect opportunity for him to cut loose and have some fun...by killing as many enemies as possible.

Azrielle
The lord of all demons, who is fiercely loyal to Ragnarok and possesses an extreme, seething hatred for humanity. After failing to aid his master in conquering the world the first time, he has no intention of repeating the same mistakes again.

I'm back, baby!

Hey everybody, hope you've been doing well. I'm pleased to say I was just recently discharged from rehab, so at long last after over a month I'm home. They ran a whole lot of tests on me and I had several surgeries, so I am finally no longer in danger of croaking. That means I'm finally free to double down on game development, when I'm not stuck sitting in some doctor's office that is. Thank you all for your well wishes, they went a long way towards improving my mental health through that strenuous time. Welp, that's enough chatter. I've got some game making to do.

Posts

IKnight42- No sweat. Truth be told, I don't like puzzles that much either. I only added ones that I thought were fun, though I suppose everything seems easy when you know the answer.

guillaume19977- Thanks for letting me know about this, I've found the problem. You only need to defeat Damien to win the battle, so focus your attacks on him.

guillaume19977- Tha] The game is great but too easy yor lv to 30 and beat the final boss oor heal at castle when your wound and the sop is to costy
Access to the caste is actually supposed to be sealed for the final battle segment, an error that will be corrected in the game's next version. I initially didn't give Pandora a healing spell, so I think I'll remove it. It seems to be making the combat a little too easy. I struggled against the final boss before Pandora could heal, though my party's levels were in the lower 20's. Thanks for your input!

Oh, I forgot to mention that I do intend to have sidequests and scenario's in the sequel.
i keep running into a virus on my download a false positive
I ran a virus check with AVG Anti-Virus before releasing the game. Just did another check now and everything is coming up clean, so you should be fine. For some reason, some anti-viruses seem to mistake vx ace game launchers for viruses.
Welp. I just beat the game, and wow that was one hell of a game. So many positives in the story telling. It had me wanting more, and more from the game.

I feel like the combat was a bit un-balanced, and leveling up felt super underwhelming. @_@

Overall though I greatly enjoyed the game.

Gah! It's Pandora's blasted healing spell I tell ya! I think it changed the battle dynamic for the worse. I'm removing it in the next version. Regardless, I'm glad you had a good time.
Hey.. Just as Pandora wanted to kill "The Angel of Light"
after the revival of, lenith
a game over screen comes! What is this?
Looking into it now, Silver. Did you manage to beat the second round of that boss with Pandora still alive? If you wouldn't mind using the hide button to conceal your comment, I'd appreciate it. It has a few pretty huge spoilers.
Oops. Hey extremely sorry. was so annoyed, by that and forgot about the spoiler. Read the hidden, text
I,had pandora Level 40, and fully evolved slime of level 40 with me. The battle was heard, and pandy even died. But the next turn i was able to win using the slime. Anyway, everything was smooth and pandy revives lanith. But then suddenly game over screen.

There is two things that i must mention now:

1. I didnt have to kill two, guys to open, the barrier to throne room. I defeated the left one and on my way back checked, the barrier and it was gone. I remembered Ragnarok saying i had to defeat two of them, but actually i defeated only 1

2. After the error, i reloaded and this time let the "angel" defeat me. Then after the cutscene everything was normal.

I dont know what just happened! Maybe i wasnt supposed to win at all the first time!
Nah, don't sweat it bro. That first battle was supposed to be unwinnable, but the addition of Pandora's new healing spell apparently makes it possible to win. (That blasted spell is really coming back to bite me in the butt...) I'm looking into that barrier issue as well.

Seems like there were a lot of situations I didn't think to test for because I knew exactly how to play the game, but I'm squashing all the bugs as people report them. That being said, thanks for the heads up, the next version should be much cleaner.

Sorry for the hiccups you've been encountering, but I hope you've been having fun in spite of them.
If you remove Pandora's healing, the game goes back to "use Demora and ignore all the other summons"

Maybe give her the single target spell, or increase the amount potions heal, and decrease their cost.
Love the game lots I am curious if you are able to get into the sacred sanctuary though. Can't wait to play the sequel I am assuming we will be playing the good guys considering the cliff-hanger you left us. Another thing I really enjoyed about your game is that rarely do you find games where you actually play as the bad guys most time your always playing the good guys so this game was really something special well done.
rebel1223- One thing I wanted to avoid was having this game feel like a typical rpg with a villain wrapper slapped over it. Heroes rely heavily on potions, but I wanted the villains to play a bit differently, which is why I made potions almost useless in this game. The battle rhythm I was going for was to have the player start with offensive summons, switch to a healer when necessary, then switch back to an offensive summon. For that reason I was careful not to make any enemies that could one shot a decently leveled party member, and had most of them focus on gradually dealing damage. I wanted the player to use the summon mechanic as much as possible.

In hindsight, I'm not too fond of Pandora having healing powers. Each character has a certain specialty, so having her be able to summon, attack and heal takes away from her main gimmick; being a summoner. Demora is designed without any offense so players would use her quickly, then switch to something that could actually do damage. I do appreciate your suggestions though. As always, thanks for the feedback, bud.

EnrickBlack- The Sacred Sanctuary is tied to a specific side quest. Try poking around the Tamer's School in Arcfall to kick it off. It's great to hear you're having a good time! I had always wanted to play a non-comedic game where you could be the villain, but I was having trouble finding one I liked, so I just went ahead and made one. A game built around the origin story of a villain seemed to have endless potential to me.

And yeah, you'll be playing as heroes in the sequel, but don't expect it to be any less fun. I already have the story planned out, so it's just a matter of execution now. I have a lot of ideas that I believe will make it something special. Thanks Enrick,I hope to be able to provide you and the good folks here at rmn with even more entertainment in the future.
Phew... Just finished the game. Although I have missed so many scenarios (by the way, this feature of acquiring cut scenes is awesome.) Therefore, I wished to mention some points here which are – you can say, my ideas, suggestions or recommendations. Please beware – should you chose to read- that these may contain spoilers which may ruin your fun.

1. If you go to the cauldron while you Marcus in your party, you cannot use the cauldron. You have to remove him and then come. You can arrange a way in which this is possible even while he is in the active party.

2. I was so obsessed with the story that I kept moving without leveling up. And finally when I met Odin for the first time, I realized I have fallen behind. But then, there were not much places to go and gain XP. But anyway, I kept patient and did some leveling in the Sanctuary and other few places. The Point is, you cannot go to certain areas for level-up once you have exited. For an example, i would have loved to revisit the Abyss which Reinheart went to. However, Ragnarok prevents me all the time.

3. You should be able to view you team status even though they are not in the active party. This helps to recognize who needs leveling up. Especially if you’re going to allow all of them to fight bosses at the same time.

4. I have read that you plan to play with the healing spell of Pandora. I strongly recommend that you don’t remove the spell or play with it. I think that the problem is not with the spell. It is in fact a normal thing to give the main Hero (in this case the Main Villain) a healing spell. And really, the spell isn’t that strong to be held responsible for some issues. I think it is better to;

a) Harden up some bosses (increase HP/MP/spells/resistance/etc...)
b) Limit certain leisure - such as going back to the Demon Castle at certain places or during certain events.
c) Increase HP of certain random Monsters
d) Check the Resistance/Weakness system. Perhaps there is some loose knot there which is affecting the game. (Pardon me if I am being awkward, but i do not have knowledge of RPG maker scripting and stuff. I enjoy playing RPG and that’s why I am here.)
e) Limit the number of party members who can participate a battle. For example, in the final battle, I had all my party members, plus one summon monster against Aegis. The battle didn’t seem that difficult as I managed to take them all up to level 35+. Some were above 40

These issues I pointed out here are only what I remember or have noticed, and I have also already mentioned other issues I found, in some of my previous posts.
Anyway, I have enjoyed playing this game a lot. I am eagerly waiting for the sequel. Please read the hidden text for something I wish to express.

Most RPG players have grown tired of playing as good heroes, and because of that the taste of being a hero is gone. But when you play as a villain, there is something new to it. Then, having to battle the kind heroes of light and to feel being loved by some of them, is again new. And then, slowly you start to love them, you start to wonder why are you doing all of this and then the darkness in your heart starts to shake. Finally, you change from the harbinger of darkness to an angel of light. And you set off to correct your mistakes and make things right. And then you become a hero like that. And this type of hero is not distasteful, and playing such a role is not boring. Because this hero has a dark past, and you have lived through it! Now you want to live through the light. But all the while still having fragments of darkness and servants of darkness at your service. This is awesome! I really hope things turnout more interesting.

Thank you for such a lovely game. I wish someone would come out and write a walkthrough. It deserves one! For people like me who have lost so many scenarios, that would be a favor.

Is there anyway i can play the sequel, perhaps, as a tester or something?
It's a little difficult for me to type right now, because I cannot put into words how happy I am. As always, I'll try to address everything in your post. It's going to be pretty spoilery, so I'll hide it in the tab below.

I realized a little while back that having to remove Marcus to evolve monsters was tedious, so I'm making it so he does not have to be in the party to do so in the next version.

Despite its many characters, I had designed this game with minimal grinding in mind, which I think is causing a lot of problems. The fact that players actually grinded up to levels I had not expected them to reach seems to be throwing off the game balance. The truth is, you were probably strong enough to beat Odin the first time you faced him. His ultimate attack was meant to one-shot even a decently leveled party, or at least severely damage them. Ultimate Aura is a red flag for the player to guard for the upcoming 1 hit kill. I figured after getting vaporized once, the player would see his pattern and adjust their tactics accordingly.

Being able to see everyone's stats all the time would be excellent, but unfortunately, I don't know of any scripts that would make it possible. If I could do it, I definitely would.

I think your suggestion about buffing up the enemies is a decent one. For the last few battles of the game, I wanted the player to be able to use every resource, every character, every hard-earned experience point against one overwhelming foe. I wanted them to see the culmination of everything they had done, going from controlling a lone dark mage to commanding a virtual army of powerful monsters, demons and mages. Aegis in particular must have been underwhelming for you, being at such a high level. When I fought Aegis, everyone's level was around the mid 20's! Since Aegis is meant to be the ultimate test of the strength you've gathered, I think its stats are in need of some readjusting. Athena could probably use some work too.

Having slightly more unconventional relationships between heroes and villains is a theme that will continue on in the sequel. I spent this game developing the personalities and backstories of the villains, so that the player would see them as actual people rather than simple enemies to be vanquished. The next game will explore the personalities and pasts of the heroes, and how they clash with those of the villains. I wanted to make a story where the player was attached to characters on both sides of the conflict, rather than just the heroes.

I want you to experience all the game has to offer, so I will be more than happy to e-mail you a walkthrough when I get the chance. I'll be sure to put you on the testers list for the sequel as well, and send you a download link when I finally finish it. Thanks for all the kind words and feedback, it really means a lot to me.
I just finished the game last night.
I used Demora's Nebulos Field to reflect Athena's magic attacks' then used her again for Aegis. I was suprised it worked against what's supposed to be the two hardest late game battles. It's a bit OP.

The biggest problem with Pandora's healing spell is there never seems to be an appropriate time to use it without effecting the flow of combat. I thought it was a bit out of character for her to have a healing spell.

I didn't see a spell to revive characters either which I suppose makes sense. Until Damien's Necromancy which is only if you do Reinheart's quest.

Overall Umbral Soul felt really unique to me. The story and gameplay mixed together well. The soundtrack's good too. I appreciated the added effects like the different backgrounds.

I look foward to your future projects and hope you succeed WheelmanZero.

Thanks Iknight, I thought healing was out of character for Pandora as well. I gave it to her because I thought perhaps the first build of the game was too hard, but it seems like players are leveling faster than I imagined. It might cause some story issues for the sequel as well, so I've decided to remove it and tweak some of the enemies stats.

There are only 2 moves in the game that revive, since having easy access to revival would've made it even easier. Overall I wanted the flow of combat to be slightly different from a standard rpg.

I'm going to spend some time fixing this game up before continuing on to the sequel. As it is, laced with bugs, spelling and balance issues, I don't feel comfortable leaving it alone. Thanks for playing, and I hope to see you at the sequel!

Oh, one more thing. Thanks for the tip off about that reflect spell. I'm going to increase its MP cost to prevent spamability.

Guillaume: why do you want fix the game ok it easy but it let focus at stry and quest not farm like morons for hours the leves can cause issu in the squel because we not gonna have same carachters d you have a name for the sequel
Yeah, your balance and progression is fine. All I can say is take away Pandora´s new healing spell like you did and just buff the non healing summons by about 10%, especially their later forms. (also, that berserker guy might need a slight 5% stat boost cause he seemed a little meh)
