Umbral Soul YouTube Review

Since there is a three hundred word requirement, I'll include a bit about the game that I rather enjoyed to 'pad' this out, but most of it will be found in the review above.

Umbral Soul...I’ve been asked to try this game for almost as long as I’ve been streaming. Many highlight it as not only one of the best RPG Maker Games, but also one of the the best examples of RTP does not equal ‘crap’

Honestly? I’m inclined to agree now that I’ve played it. In the game you actually play as the bad guys. Not a wholly original concept, but here it’s done rather well; the story was fresh, engaging, and deep.

I want to touch on two of the systems in the game I really, really enjoyed. First of all is a pokemon-like summoning system (which even has evolutions of monsters). You can summon in a new ally at any time (outside of combat) to deal with nearly every situation, once you’ve unlocked them. Most summons were story-related, and at the most there were only 17 or 18 total. A bit low, but it wasn’t the focus of the game.

The other system I thoroughly enjoyed was the scenarios. Instead of throwing exposition and lore at you without you, the player, having a say in it, sometimes during the story you’d get a notification that you unlocked a scenario. Heading back to your base, you could then watch it at your leisure. These were wonderful backstories, history's filled with lore, or side events that took place while the story progressed. Giving the player the option of not only WHEN they watched them, but IF they even watched them was a nice touch. I of course watched them all, but I know a few players that don’t want to be bogged down by a lot of story thrown at you at once.

More in the video, including my final thoughts!

Hello, Hawk. If you've read any of my reactions to the previous reviews, you're probably expecting me to flip out and go on a long-winded rant about how happy I am. "I can't believe this", "I never thought anyone would like the game this much", ect. ect. yaddah yaddah yaddah. The thing is, I've done that twelve times already, so I'm going to try something different. This time, I'm going to talk about you!

I remember reading your review for Eternal Twilight a couple months back. Based on your review, it sounded like the game had a lot of great features, so I decided to give it a whirl. I had a great time with it for the most part (although some of those bosses can go die in a fire) but by the time I had gotten to the final dungeon I was a little burnt out, so I decided to watch you finish the game instead. What I saw was incredibly entertaining, thanks in no small part to those goofballs in your chat, and from then on I started watching your videos.

What I like about your let's plays is the fact that you actually try to have fun when you play, and don't try to be overly negative or nitpicky for the sake of entertainment. You have a good time, and when I see that, it feels like I'm having a good time with you. When I learned that you were doing a let's play of Umbral Soul, I was pretty terrified, but your journey through the game was actually a joy to behold. You made some great points about what could be improved, and I practically died laughing when crimson was leading you all over the place trying to unlock everything. No one knows the game better than I do, so you can leave writing that walkthrough to ol' Wheelman.

I'd like to thank you for being such a credit to the rpg maker community by playing people's games and providing feedback in such a kind manner. We hobbyists pour work, time and love into our games, and sometimes our only reward is the player's enjoyment. Advice and criticism are important and all, but when you see a player enjoy a battle, go "aww" at a mushy cutscene, or laugh at one of your stupid jokes, it gives you a sense of fulfilment that spurs you to keep going. Thank you for your review, and all that you do. Keep up the good work, and know that I'll be watching!

P.S. Cynder, if you happen to be reading this, thank you for your kind comments as well. I'm glad you had a good time.
Wow...I really don't know what to say, other than THANK YOU.

Just as you mention how seeing someone enjoy what you do really makes it a 'joy to behold' replies like yours are the honest to god reason I do this. Sure, I want to make it big as a Twitch Streamer so I can quit my job...but at the heart...comments like yours make me feel amazing. Thank you for the really kind words. I can't wait for the sequel!
Another good review Hawk. I always enjoy watching your videos.
