PLOT

Destiny of the Dragon Lord is the alternate story of the Dragon Lord, primary antagonist of Dragon Quest 1. His goal is to conquer the land of Alefgard, which houses the kingdom of Tantagel and several villages. This game features monster armies marching from Charlock Castle (Dragon Lords keep) to every point of the land in order to enforce the Dragon Lords rule. Rebel monsters and humans both separately oppose the Dragon Lords wishes for absolute rule. His adviser Da'at tries to guide the impulsive, but powerful Dragon Lord and help make his dreams come true. Servants and new recruits through out the game add to the roster of generals that lead the Dragon Lords armies.

WHERE IT STARTED

Destiny of the Dragon Lord started as a concept while I was helping a new dev develop basic systems for a Dragon Quest 1 remake. I tried to talk him out of it because it's been done so many times, but he was adamant. I had just commissioned a Destiny of an Emperor (think JPRG NES Dysasty Warriors) battle and menu system script from LeCode with plans to make a Destiny of an Emperor Starter Pack. That evening, I told the new dev that I was going to make my own game putting a twist on this notion of remaking Dragon Quest 1. I am making a DQ1 game where the Dragon Lord is the main character and his quest is to conquer all of Alefgard. (I want to release a total of 3 DQ themed games since we don't get enough of them in the West, then forever shift away from making them.)

FEATURES

+ This game features Destiny of an Emperor styled combat and menus inspired by DoaE.

+ This game features sprites from GBC Dragon Quest 1 and 2 that have had edits as well as custom sprites.

+ This game features a shared pool of Tactic Points that fuel Tactics. They function like spells for the armies use, with the Tactic list derived from the list of abilities the curent acting strategist has. The player appoints the strategist out of combat at will and they have various lists of abilities.

+ This game has a purchasable and winnable resource called food. Each step your party takes on the world map depletes it as you are armies marching to do battle.

+ Like DoaE, reaching new mile stones in the games development will cause the in battle HP (Troop) gauges to change a new color and have a new min/max display range.

+ Like DoaE, portraits of important characters will have backgrounds rather than solid single colors behind them.

+ Like DoaE, most recruits have preset HP (Troops,) but main characters gain HP (Troops) per level.

+ Like DoaE, exp is stored for Party Level only, and party members are automatically the Party Level at any given time. Level ups are for Main Character HP (Troops,) Shared TP Gains and access to new Tactics.

Misao Awards 2016 coming up fast.

While I won't ask or demand anyone vote for this game, I do ask that if you really believe it deserves to win a Misao... please take the moment to vote over not voting. This project hasn't generated the traffic some of the others have from things like being a Featured Game or being based off a more popular series or deved by a popular developer.

Small time over here, but this game accurately recreated old school DoaE mechanics down to the battle system, food system, recruiting system, ect. Best Old-School Game is the reasonable target I'm hoping for and I have a strong feeling this game will end up going against Oblivion Quest, which was a contest winner and featured game and thus reached a much lager audience of potential voters.

If everyone that has privately complimented me over at the Den or done a Let's Play or had private discussions about the games inner workings were to take the tiem to vote, there's a real chance of a win here. It all comes down to turn out. Fingers crossed and everyone have a great holiday.

And then some asshole armed with a club shows up and undoes all the Dragonlord's hard work.

Subscribed. This looks cool as hell.
Oh, I saw this on Dragon's Den! Good luck.

Made me LoL. In this game, that asshole with a club is an antagonist! This alternate story takes place at the same time as the Descendant of Erdrick is questing to save the lands!

Thank you. I need to update the posting there. Luckily it's not far from completion! I hope I hit the release mark, but tend to get distracted easily from working on projects as they get closer to being finished. :(
I'm very interested to see where this goes.

<- Though somehow, I imagine I might come across as biased

Thank you. I've read you like DoaE and can tell you like DQ. Not bias at all. Wink wink. As I've said in the past, I consider Brave Hero Yuusha to be a great game. I hope this game doesn't fail to impress when finished.
Are the scripts free to use or it is (sadly) made only for your game? I suck at playing the original Destiny of an Emperor but the gameplay of it it's so nice...

There are a bunch of free to use scripts in the game that I copied off the master list and credited in the credits, and some made for me under the agreement I could release them as free to use with credit to the original scripter. I plan on releasing a starter pack. I changed a few small things on the menu script for DotDL without noting changes, so it'd be better to use the original version on a fresh project. If I don't finish the starter pack in the next few weeks, I may break down and release the commissioned scripts stand alone until then.

I heard of that Starter Kit and it was like it wasn't ever made anymore but thanks to this, i'm glad this starter kit is still going on.

It might be easier for me just to release an open source version of DotDL, and swap script mods out for originals. May just do that to save myself the time of ripping sprites, after all, anyone that really wants to make a game can make or rip sprites themselves.

John, there is now an open source file up. It has LeCodes original versions of the scripts without my tweaks and changes. It also has all of the DoaE 1 face sprites already arranged for use. It does not have the DoaE character sprites or tile sets, but they are easy to rip.

I'll still try to get to the starter kit to have all of the DoaE stuff inn one convenient download, but just providing the scripts and a project to see how they were used is huge.

An Sha exist within the game, but is not called An Sha. It's likely you'll beat the game 2-3 levels shy of unlocking it, but get it for the post game fights.
sjmorgan, I applaud you. Hunting down all the Oricalcum I needed to stand a chance in the challenge room....that was nothing to the shock of the third time I fought King Loric's final boss.

Spoiler
I'm not sure if it was as a result to me beating the challenges, or just because I fought the weak humans to much, but Lu Bu appearing was a major shock, and then beating him, only to find him in my roster.......priceless!

So, now that the Challenge room and the above is done, is there anything else for me to see? I've already got the unbeatable weapon, two of the unbeatable armors, as far as I know I have every general. Is there anything else for me to do, or is it time to look for a new game to work on?

Also, what is the highest level? I got to lvl 30, then used the elder wyvern to get to lvl 31, and even with many hours of grinding for Oricalcum, no new level.

Richterfaust, congrats. You've done everything the game offers. Level 30 was the Cap in Dragon Quest 1, so I applied that here. In Destiny of an Emperor, you could break the level cap by 1 thru an NPC. 31 is Destiny of the Dragon Lords limit! I was wondering when someone would discover the spoiler part you posted. It only happens after completing the challenge room.

I'm curious. How much time did you log?

Let's see, each video was roughly 30 an hour long, and I did grinding in between episodes, so..... 5 hours of video, roughly 10-20 minuted in between each, so lets add another 3, plus trying to hunt down all the Oricalcom. I ended up giving up after the first Rare, and ended up cheating in the rest I needed for the unbeatable. (Would have just tuffed it out, but had to finish the series to get back to my other series)

I'd say I put in at least 12 hours. I was slow because I wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything.

Here is my channel in case you want to see. I finished the DotDL a couple of weeks ago.
