Story

What started as aimless wandering became a journey into the mortal subconscious.

"Something about it was different. They were drawn to the island by some inexplicable feeling..."

Two young travellers follow the rumours of a cursed island near the center of the world. Deep within a cave of primal beasts they discover a cold black stone.
Those who see it claim it shines yet it sheds no visible light to the travellers.
All the while they are monitored by seven beings who call themselves the Ubermensch.

Supposedly the stone awakens the most simplistic and violent thoughts in everything around it, yet the travellers remain immune to the artifact's influence.
Why are they different from others?
Who are the Ubermensch and what do they want?

Game Mechanics

Soul is a classical RPG with some strategic combat elements built into the existing RPGMXP system.
There are 7 elemental properties, 6 weapon types and 7 status effects. A wide array of buffs, debuffs and magic shields continue adding depth to combat. Most effects have a limited duration. Every monster in the game has different weaknesses and resistances to everything.

Leveling does not give massive bonuses to statistics. Monsters often leave behind their souls, which can be distributed to any character for a permanent stat increase. Every character is able to be custom built with time and effort. All monsters drop different types of souls and many souls are hidden in various objects throughout the game.
There are 7 characters, each with their own unique set of skills and abilities. Between all characters there are over 150 skills for players to utilize.

NPCs and book shelves in towns have the occasional hint or piece of information to help the player along. Investigate everything!

Plot Elements

Soul follows the journey of Kris and Amy as they try to destroy the stone and discern why they are not affected by it.
The Ubermensch eventually confront the travellers and present them with a strange ultimatum: "Come to us or we will kill you."
Something known only as The Entity has warned the Ubermensch about Kris, Amy, and their friends.

Deriving some content from the written works of Nietzsche, Sartre, Heidegger, Camus and Freud, Soul takes the player through an ontological polemic on errors in human judgement. The problem of immortality is confronted in relation to the finitude of existence, while nihilism and the human propensity for violence are scrutinized. As the game progresses this evolves into a look at the dangers of Nietzsche's will to power, the overwhelming fear of death and not existing, and the desire to control mortality.

Another bug fix! :)

Apparently there's a sprite I deleted and I forgot to remove an NPC event using it.

The game download has been updated.

As before, simply take your save file and put it into the folder with the new version of the game.

I hope this is the last time I have to do this. Thank you for your patience.
I also discovered a music file I wasn't using, so the file overall is a bit smaller now. :)

Let me know what you think, I'm always looking for feedback.
Hmm.. The demo looks nice. Good job, "Kris and Amy" though, pff- Kris, you suck at coming up with names. You should finish it and maybe add some horror into it, after all. I am a fan of gruesome horror scary things.
Kehe ~
this looks pretty neat, specially with the content it derives.
Hey do you need help with a title screen I can make you one if you want.
And nice game let me know if you want to team up sometime. Oh and I would like to help you with you're game
Some edits and fixes have been made to the final boss and final dungeon.

If you've already started playing, simply take your save file and put it in the folder with the new version of the game.

Have fun and thanks for giving my game a try. :)
I hope you enjoy it.

Have been trying to play this for a while now and I can't for the life of me extract the game without getting this error. Could you put the game available on a zip file, please?

Genuinely curious why this doesn't have more attention. It looks good. I'll definitely be giving this a try.
Let me know if there's anything you want to know about the game. Thank you for your time. :)
Actually, I did try downloading it today but I got the same error as CarlosDavilla. Not sure what could be causing it, but I do know that RMXP and RMVX both had some difficulties with compression which would make the executables crash. Would really love to play this, do you happen to have the game uploaded elsewhere that I could try?
If I remember correctly, I had the same problem and you can just extract the game with right click + extract on the exe (like in the readme). It's probably a wrong compilation (there shouldn't be a Test002 file).

Link removed.
Right clicking on the file doesn't give me an option to extract from a .exe file. I'm using windows 10, if that makes a difference. I'll be honest, I'm not really inclined to download links from people or websites that I don't know to run software on my computer, although I appreciate the effort. If the dev would like to upload a zip file or something that's great, but until then I think I'll be playing it safe.

Also, there's something a little fishy about uploading someone else's game to a third party site without their permission. As a dev myself, I wouldn't want that and would probably ask them to take it down, no matter how well-intentioned it may be.
Yes, you're right, sorry. Just a bad habbit from archiving. I'll just keep the link in store in case the dev don't mind.
The Read Me file explains everything. If you follow the instructions the way they are written you should be fine. There is an install program for the missing file.

Otherwise, for the unzipping simply put the file into a blank folder, right click the file and pick Extract Here. Do the same thing to the new file you find in the folder.
This works every time, and I've done it for many people who have had this problem. :)
Got it to work. Gotta say, really makes it difficult to play when you have to have an extraction software downloaded, it really would make things a lot more user friendly to just have the game compressed into either a zip folder or even having the full game fully extracted and then compressed to an rar file if absolutely necessary. The double extraction just kind of adds an extra hurdle, and players that don't already have either WinRAR or 7zip installed will have no idea how to actually play the game and probably just pass over it entirely, not considering it to be worth the trouble.

With that said, the game is working, so I'll be diving into it here soon. Thanks for the step-by-step help, I'll let you know what I think of the game.
The game is already zipped and compressed to include the other files, which is why you have to unzip it in the first place.

This is the only method I've found that works.
Nothing else circumvented the problem.

I've yet to find a recent Windows computer that didn't come with 7zip, and WinRAR has been free for years.
