Changing Designs

So after getting some feedback on my MC's design, I decided to maybe see if it could be changed. And thus, here are we! New design and everything. And the design is...

Ta-dah! I like this design a little better - it looks more distinct, and it has a scarf. And a massive anime braid. How can anything compare to massive anime braids?

Downside - it does destroy the gender ambiguity I was going for, but I noticed that people were calling the MC a boy, so that was probably not working anyway. But, upside, the MC's supposed to be Caucasian/Native American, and now she actually looks like it! In my opinion, the last design was a little, ehm... pale.

Other downside - it hits right on that cliche "little girl horror protagonist" trope, but I hope there's enough in the game to differentiate Dream Eater as a whole.

Thanks for sticking with me, guys!

I liked the gender ambiguity before (and didn't think they were a boy), but to be honest, it was really hard to look at the previous design and not see Chara from Undertale, and that's a little immersion-breaking to me. It's not as if Undertale has a monopoly on medium-short brown hair and green sweaters, so I know that's a little unfair, especially because I doubt you did that on purpose at all. Still, my own reaction to the original design was the Undertale association, and with this new cutie I'm much less likely to attempt certain types of in-game behavior for shits and giggles.

While this design is a bit more feminine, it still doesn't seem like the MC is necessarily a girl - especially if they're Native, since it's more common for some Native boys and men to wear braids, so the braid codes less feminine in context (though if that's something you have in mind, it's probably a good idea to make sure that matches up with the specific cultural background you have in mind for this character, even if you never go into specifics in-game.) I also feel like the colors on the pixel sprite come across more gender-neutral than the colors on the full sketch, and also look a bit more appealing? It's a colorful but subdued look, and that gives off a lot of personality to me.
you draw some absolutely stunning scenery but that sprite could use some work. Lots of banding and muted colors that don't work necessarily well together.
That being said, I love the new design and I think it's still quite ambiguous.
I mean I'm a guy and that's pretty much how I do my hair xD

Thank you! What do you mean by "banding," though? Would you suggest a higher contrast palette?

Banding is a noticeable shifting in shades between one colour and the next. If you were around during the start of public digital cameras it's that poor gradient effect that happened there, resulting in "bands" of different shades rather than a gradual shift one one shade to the next.

I really have no idea how that applies to the above pic though, unless he means the shading lines on your pixel art.

I like this character. My love for huge braids aside it's a very simple yet unique design.

:D I'd be so happy if you did! You gotta show me if you do.
Honestly, I think it's fine.

Maybe lighten the middle tone of the hair on the sprite just a tad so that it doesn't blend quite so much with the darkest colour (since the rest of the colours used in the design are quite distinct from each other). I think the expression on her face in her sprite helps break up the 'little girl in danger' stereotype. She looks like she could give two shits what's going on around her.

I can just imagine her going "Yeah, whatever, you keep doing that creepy thing you're doing. I'm just gonna head this way, m'kay? M'kay."
