In a small town encircled by trees, mysterious events are unfolding. Pet rabbits are going missing, people have been injured, and the townsfolk are whispering about something lurking in the woods... Since none of the adults want to do anything about this, it's going to be up to you to get to the bottom of it.

Before you can do that, however, simply getting into the woods might be a problem.

Red Trees is a roughly forty minute-long adventure game with mild horror elements. It features custom music and graphics, a colourful cast of characters, and a lot of bunnies. It's best enjoyed in a bright room with a warm cup of tea.

Red Trees v1.5 update

Hello, everyone! It's been a while.

This month marks Red Trees' third anniversary. In light of this, I've spent the past month or so working on a pretty big update to the game: the version 1.5 update.

So what's new in 1.5?

  • All of the music and most of the sound effects have been updated.

  • Certain visuals have been updated, particularly those pertaining to the UI. Most of the original character and map art remains intact, however.

  • Dialogue has been added, and a some sections of dialogue have been altered.

  • There's a brand new custom pause menu which brings with it a couple of new features: the ability to view the item you're holding in detail, and a log of all the characters you've met thus far.

  • You can run on outdoor maps now.

  • ... And various other minor changes which aren't significant enough to list.

Version 1.5 is out now and available for download! You can get it here, or you can get the version with the VX Ace RTP bundled in over at the game's itch.io page. If you preferred the old version, though, not to worry; it will also remain available for download here.

Finally, I just want to say that I'm incredibly grateful for the support that has been shown to Red Trees over the past 3 years. It may only be a small and insignificant game in the grand scheme of things, but every single message I've received from someone telling me that they enjoyed it has meant the world to me. Version 1.5 is, to me, the best version of this game that I could make while still retaining still retaining its heart, and now that it's here, I hope you enjoy playing it as much as I enjoyed working on it.

Red Trees was created with very little outside input and I'm pretty inexperienced, so I definitely ended up making a lot of unintuitive design choices. I hope to fix a lot of the issues you've pointed out when/if I get around to updating it.

I'll be checking for updates then!

Finally got around to playing this, and I thought it was super cute :D Definetly great for a first game! Though, I probably wouldn't call it a horror game ^^;

I also did a LP for the game, and I'll probably get around to uploading it tomorrow, and I might write a review afterwards :D I did enjoy it, but it had some minor flaws (mostly just passability issues and not knowing what to do next because of lack of info ^^)
Thank you again, everyone. This game got a lot more attention than I thought it would. I'm super grateful that a lot of people have enjoyed it.

@Koi Thank you for taking the time to write such detailed feedback!

I was thinking of writing a review but I'd rather just dump my thoughts here.

Adorable art, I love how you did so much with only like 4 colours. But, as Dragnfly was saying there really needs to be a run button. Like seriously, you don't have many maps just untick disable dashing there is literally no reason I can think of that you'd keep us at such a slow pace in a game that's 90% backtracking.

Also you might want to encrypt your archive. I eventually got stuck, and because it wasn't encrypted I decided to poke around in the game's file to find out how to finish it (it's because I didn't think of who to give that damn lollipop to). And through that I found a problem, unintuitive gameplay.

Since your game is comprised of fetch quests to progress, having them be more intuitive would be good. I mean, I see a cat outside, and some milk in a fridge. Yet that's not the way I'm supposed to get the cat? And when the cashier said that I needed to find something to help her, I thought that meant help her stay awake. Then I'm shocked when I can't take that protein stuff and make her an energy drink! When I finally looked in the game's files and saw she needed a pillow, (and of course avoiding the spooky house because I hadn't gotten there yet) I started raging over how absolutely none of the beds had events on the pillows. There are so many beds with so many pillows, how is that NOT the logical conclusion?

Granted most of the fetch quests had logical progression, but regardless. Just getting into the gameplay took forever.

But okay enough of the bad stuff I really wanna point out that you had some hilarious bits, like the mother and the trash. Like, of COURSE we're going to be looking in the trash cans of an RPG, it's a great way to make the player the punchline.

Also, the names of the grocery products as you made your way down the aisle. Since we're of course just going to be checking each space consecutively in one direction, I like that you made use of that to make it funny. Normally I give up half way through a row of something, but since I could tell it was going somewhere humorous with it, I kept on down the line. Really good jokes ten outta ten

Btw that ending was... confusing and came out of no where, but I like the direction you took.
this was such a beautiful game very well made and witty, i thoroughly enjoyed playing through and was very sad when it ended because i loved it so much! You made such a wonderful and pleasing game, thank you.
This game is brilliant! So brilliant that I was admittedly a bit sad when it ended

My play was hindered by a lack of run button and an inability to scale up in ALT+ENTER. I played a bit regardless though and the graphics are indeed very nice and there's been some interesting oddities in the setting so far that I'm interested to learn about.

You're magical to me.

Absolutely loved this! ^_^ I'm usually not super-crazy about games where the main gameplay is trading stuff to give to other people to progress the game, but the music was beautiful (and a little haunting), the graphics were super cute and really pretty, and the town is brimming with personality. I really loved this, especially the ending!

Kudos on such a nice game! :DDDDD
Thank you for the kind comments, everyone. I hope you enjoy the game. m(_ _)m
Yay! I love cute/funny things with horror elements! <3 :D
This game looks beautiful, subscribed.
No gameplay explanation yet,
but I'm a sucker for this kind of graphic style.
