Development Has Begun (Plus A Little Video)

Not really a progress report, but I've begun making the game proper...sort of. I had made like two and a half scenes from the prologue before I decided that I would rather get the writing of the cases over with before actually making the game, so I've been spending the past two days going back over those and tweaking them and such. I added in the difficulty selection at the very beginning of the game, changed the font to something that hopefully looks a little better than RPG Maker's default font, and reformatted the text boxes to accommodate the new font.

Well, it turns out that I'm an idiot. Apparently I have never in the past gone: "Huh, I wonder if someone made a text wrapper for VX Ace?" Because someone did. Like, years and years ago. And all this time I've been manually formatting my text for all of my games. Danganronpa Team is in good hands. But seriously, now that I actually bothered to look up a text wrapper and stick it in the game, making the game is going to go faster. So yay for that.

But anyways, moving on to the real point of this little blog post, I'm going to give you a glimpse of Danganronpa Team in action. I don't believe I've said this before, but I'm using Ace Attorney sound effects in this game. I was going back through the scenes I made and thought they seemed a little plain if a sound effect played during some conversation and nothing else happened. So I decided to make these emotion pop-up things. I don't know what to call them. But I made a video that shows them all off. So check it out. And apologies for potato quality. I recorded it through OBS, so it's not exactly HD.

Obviously the dialogue in the video is not in the game. It's just a little mock-up I made so I could show all of the emotion pop-up things within like 30 seconds.

Now that I made those...whatever those are, changed the font, and blah blah blah blah blah, there are only a few graphical things I still have to make for Danganronpa Team, and I'm going to be making those as I go. I'll list 'em just because I like to hear myself talk for transparency. And most of this isn't stuff listed on the game page, so keep readin'.

Map of the Island: Yes indeedy. While most of Foxy Island is closed off in the beginning, you'll be able to see (almost) all of it from the get-go with a handy dandy map tucked right into the game's folder for you! Peruse it at your leisure!

Evidence Pop-Up Thingie: If you've played Danganronpa or Ace Attorney you know that you get an evidence pop-up thingie whenever you pick up evidence during an investigation. You know, with the *scwhing* and the...you know what I mean. I still haven't made that. I should do that. Like, tonight.

Corpse Discovery CGs: Everybody likes discovering corpses. Well, I have to draw them. I'm not the greatest artist in the world by any means, but I'll whip up some half-decent CGs for when everyone comes across a corpse.

Other Animated Goodies: Yeah, so those thingies in the video aren't the only animated doodads in the game. There's one particular scene like right at the end of the final chapter that's going to require some animation. Plus there are like two things I need to animate for the trials I think (nothing big). And something a little more major I'm thinking of doing for the showdowns.

An OP: I've been mulling this one over for a while. I made an OP for the last visual novel I made and it was a ton of work just for a measly minute and a half of opening. I guess since Danganronpa Team is a labor of love I'll take a crack at making an OP. No promises though. HOWEVER. If I do make the OP, as soon as it's finished I will upload it here on RPGMaker.net. You could consider that a "trailer".

I think that's it. If I've forgotten something I don't remember what it is. Now I'm gonna shut up and take a crack at making this OP. Wish me luck and the motivation of a thousand men.

Edit: By the way, I forgot that I wanted to hand out a fun fact! At the time of this blog's writing, Danganronpa Team is comprised of 689 images. Over 200 of those are for chapter intros. 86 of them are for character sprites. Over 140 of them are for pieces of the HUD. And over 200 of them are for end of chapter results screens. And while I'm at it, the soundtrack has been completely selected and is comprised of about 70 tracks (I'm rounding up). The more you know!
