A bit too challenging

Little Red is an indie game created with Game Maker Studio. This little game has a lot of potential, but I found some of the game play to be frustrating and tedious. You are Red Riding Hood and your mission is to kill the wolf. In order to to that you'll need to go through a forest full of enemies, defeat some bosses, get some keys, and unlock a door.

I don't particularly agree with the enemy placement in this room.

The controls are very well designed for this game. You use WASD to move your character and you use the arrow keys to shoot. I found that you could press multiple arrow keys at one time to shoot in multiple directions. The mechanics here are very solid and I wish the rest of the game matched this.

If you touch an enemy or get hit just once you'll be instantly teleported back to your last check point. Sometimes you don't even see yourself get hit, the teleportation is so quick you literally won't know what hit you. And it's very easy to get hit. There's no reason to waste your time to fight the normal enemies. You don't gain experience and as soon as you re-enter a room or die they come back. So I found myself just running all over the place just to try to get to the next room.

I mastered this boss by just standing right there.

The respawn issue with the distance of the check points is a real issue with the game play. I sort of wish the enemies would be gone from a room if you could defeat them all. Getting hit one time to get sent back 2 or 3 rooms is not fun (All those guys are just going to be back.) Also, some of the enemies run far to quickly towards you. And sometimes they are placed too close to the entrances or exits of maps.

The background sound is sort of fitting and I didn't mind the the graphics of this game. In all there's a lot of potential here. I saw another review for this game giving it a 4. While I could see this game potentially getting a score like that if everything was fixed, that's not where this game sits now. I give this game a 3 / 5.

Thank you for the review! Little Red was the first thing I made in GameMaker, so feedback like this is valuable (even though I've gotten to it late, haha...).

A good point that you bring up is the fact that there's no incentive in fighting enemies, since they don't drop anything and respawn. I unfortunately don't plan to revisit Little Red, but if I make something like it in the future, incentive to fight is definitely something I'll keep in mind.

As for the game's difficulty, I guess that since it was a game jam, I was in a rush so I didn't properly consider balance. Nor did I really consider how the difficulty would be received by other players, since I consider the difficulty alright - as somebody that's put hundreds of hours into Binding of Isaac, so I guess I just didn't have the same problems.

Looking back, I'm proud of Little Red as a first game kind of thing, but I acknowledge that it's very flawed. Again, I appreciate the feedback!
