Marrend's aside

As I may have mentioned in a comment on the main page, the original pitch I made was an RPG with visual novel elements. My main sources of inspiration was somewhat from Heartache 101, but more from Memories Neverlasting.

With Memories Neverlasting, the protagonist could move around on maps, and visit various locations where the VN elements would take place. I liked this ten times better than the board-game-like mechanics of Heartache, not to mention whatever function decided who players would meet in a given encounter. How much this game concerned itself with romance was up in the air at the time. I will say, though, that the one thing I wanted to avoid, at least as far as the VN elements was concerned, was going so far as to have backgrounds and character models, and that whole shebang.

The demo of Memories Neverlasting that I played way-back-when only had dungeon-delving as it's RPG element. However, things like side-quests, or tasks that affect affinity by significant amounts, was a consideration for this game.

I'm not exactly sure when the Might and Magic inspiration came into play. Possibly when Cap_H got on the team, and him telling me on the recruitment/announcement thread that he'd love to make the ultimate Might and Magic fan-game with me. As I recall the conversation in our team's QuickTopic, Kloe's not played any Might and Magic game (That's okay!), while TungerManU's played a bit of Heroes of Might and Magic 3. I don't recall if Cap_H specified which games that he's played, and I probably didn't either. I know I've played all the main-line* games to completion, except for the original (Of course!) and the ninth game of the series. However, there's a number of concepts that we borrow/take from games before the sixth game of the series.

If there is one thing I'm definitely glad for, it's that we didn't try to do a first-person perspective (though I suppose it's at least possible in TsuK3). Working with GTBS again has brought some additional amount of illumination as to how it works. I'm not saying I'm more willing to go back to Nakaishi Wars as a result, but, it's still nice to have learned things.

*There can possibly be an argument that the Heroes of Might and Magic sub-series is the main-line of games now-a-days. Thanks for that, Ubisoft.

Ok, this is my first thread on RMN. I got it on Steam since then
So, I'm not big on the mainline, The first one I plaid was IX, which was bundled with Heroes IV. Later I touched VII and tried out Books I and II in an Apple II emu.
Besides Heroes series, I got my hands on Clash of The Heroes and I recently finished Dark Messiah.
Actually, I got in RPGs few months back after getting them in a bundle. Started playing all of them at once.

You're magical to me.

For the older games, I use DosBox, and the copy of the games from the Limited Edition of Mandate of Heaven. Though, I also see gog.com selling the Limited Edition of Mandate for $10.

*Edit: It's funny about the Heroes sub-series, though. Since Heroes 2, the main-games have been focusing on, or existing in parallel to, the Heroes sub-series. Mandate happens in the continent of Enroth, with Roland as king. This presumes he won the Succession Wars that was the plot-line of Heroes 2. You meet Queen Catherine in For Blood and Honor, and she's in the opening FMV of Heroes 3 (and has her own campaign, if I recall). Day of the Destroyer is a bit fuzzy in my head, so I cannot comment on that.

Though, given the ending of MM5, they could not follow the story that the series had been perusing since MM1. So, I guess they needed some kind of story to tell, and chose to pick up from Heroes 2. Though, I'm not exactly sure what's the deal with Lord Ironfist in the original Heroes. From what I recall, I swear it was in the manual, is that he is not originally from the world of Heroes. Where he does come from, well, it might not matter, in the end.

Er, sorry about this rant!

Actually, I read that Mandate was supposed to be follow up to Might and Magic books and ended up in Enroth due to Heroes' popularity. When you play Heroes 2, there are doors advertising Mandate. I think that VIII is set after Heroes 3 and before Chronicles, which bring the Armageddon.
And first heroes are mess with characters like Sandro, Yog and Kastore... They simply took characters from all previous entries and made them recruit-able heroes.
Later on they made fashion out of this. Both Sandro and Yog became important characters in H3.

I vaguely remember the ad for M&M6 in Heroes 2. However, as I recall it, that ad was little more than a medley of still images. The kind that game uses when entering a house. I'm not even sure if any of those images were actually used, though, it's been quite some time since I both saw that add, and played M&M6.

I haven't read any of the books related to the series, so, I cannot comment on how they were planned to relate to Mandate. However, I loved the fact that they used various characters from the Might and Magic series as the heroes for the first two games of the Heroes sub-series. The number of references/characters to the old series absolutely dropped of after Heroes 2. I'm not exactly sure who the later games in the sub-series could possibly reference, though.

Now that I think about it, with MM6, MM7, and MM8, very few characters make any impression on me at all. I couldn't tell you the names of the default party members, and I can't recall the names of any of the lords that grant class upgrades. Even the one lord with the terrible memory that you get the Sorcerer upgrade-quests from.

Also, if you name any random hero from Heroes 3, I probably couldn't tell you anything about their background. As far as I'm concerned, they do not have a background. They did not exist in the Might and Magic multiverse until that game. Yet, if you name any random hero from Heroes 1 or Heroes 2, I could probably tell you which game(s) they are from, what they did, and what-have-you. That's what I liked most about those first two games. That could just be nostalgia talking, though!
