Current status: Abandoned

.defrag is a surreal experimental adventure game where the objective is to make your way through the strange surroundings and meet several colorful characters along your journey. Despite being made on an RPG-oriented engine, the game stays at its core an adventure game with an emphasis on exploration.

Your hero is given a quest to find several characters who have gone missing. However, that is only part of a bigger problem: a mysterious syndrome that corrupts the minds of the infected with no apparent chance of recovery. It is up to you to unravel the mystery behind the onset of "noise" and uncover the world's troubled past.

I made this game as kind of a self-imposed challenge over a span of 2 weeks in August 2016. Over time, .defrag evolved into something far bigger and more complex than I had originally planned, so much that it is still in development to this day.

The project is unrelated to my other game prototype "_fade", as of yet.

As a word of warning, the game features mature content such as suicide, violence, strong language, drug and tobacco references, which might disturb or offend some viewers. Discretion is therefore advised and the same warning can be found at the start of the experience.

It features:
- Monochrome, minimalist character and level design
- Strong language and mature content which might not fit to everyone
- An experimental soundtrack
- Colorful characters with intriguing backgrounds

This has to be my favorite fucking thing, or at the very least it's in my top 2000.

OK, just kidding. Top 1900. <3

Thanks for the quick reply. The download link is working now, and I just downloaded the game. Yesterday it kept giving me a 404 page, so perhaps the site itself was having issues. Looks interesting, going to play it this afternoon!

Hey, no problem. Glad it worked out in the end! It might have been the website, yeah, happens sometimes. Looking forward to your impressions on the game.

Download link is broken. Looks interesting though. I wanted to give it a try.
Is it? Works fine on my end. I can PM you the preview build if you're still experiencing issues.

more stuff

OK, thanks for clarifying that. As I said, there are elements that people will enjoy and other elements that people won't. I'm perfectly aware of what you said. :) But I feel as if this game at its current stage is the perfect representation of love it/hate it, and I honestly find it very interesting, even inspirational.

Introducing more artwork is actually in my to-do list, as well as a variety of happenings and new content. In fact, the game is still in development, and there will be also more details that will attempt to explain why the maps are the way they are, perhaps I should have stated it earlier. It's true that there's currently no explanation in-game as to why the maps have to be the way they are, but it's actually something I've been thinking about.

Anyways, thanks for your feedback. With that said, I hope you stay tuned until v1.3.0 comes out. Hopefully, things will get more interesting for the players.

stuff

Hi, thanks for leaving your thoughts here :)

Well, as I've said multiple times either here or Gamejolt where it's also hosted, the game has polarizing elements which not a lot of people may enjoy. But that's down to individual taste, in my opinion. However, I do seem to smell a pattern here, of people simply judging the game for the first 20 minutes of gameplay and then changing their minds once they start investing their time on the characters and explore the world more. So, I suggest finishing the experience first (I'm still developing v1.3.0 which will bring some changes, as well as introducing some new content) and then come back here. :)

If you still feel the game is boring, then I don't think there's anything I can do to change your mind, especially if you find games like Yume Nikki & co. "objectively boring". About the art style, it's kind of a passive-aggressive wording there, I'm not sure if you're just neutral about it. That's just how it is, anyways.

I really like the atmosphere that this game creates, and the background sounds/music really contributes well to this, but i think it would be much better without the footsteps sound effect. It got on my nerves after a little while, mixed with the slow walking and being unsure where to go. Couldn't finish it yet because of that :( but i hope to come back to it since the writing is well done and the plot seems intriguing from what I've seen so far.

Thanks for your feedback! I hope you do come back to finish the game, and if you need any direction you can always shoot me a PM. :)

About the footsteps, that's actually the first time someone's addressing this, so I'll keep it in mind for the future.

Yeah, I agree that it could cause some confusion, so I'll just go ahead and change it. I already have a few ideas of what I could rename it, thanks!

Alright then, no problem at all! :)

Hey, thanks for reaching out to me! Well, you may keep the title if you want, but I think it would probably create a bit of confusion among the user base. You know what, you can shoot me a PM and maybe we can figure out something together. :)

I apologize, the walk speed really got to me. :( But what I did play of the game was very pretty and unsettling.

Thank you :) The next updates will try to address navigation in order to make it less overbearing.

Hey, I've recently been working on a game with a similar title to yours, and I just wanted to check with you if you'd prefer me to change the name before I release it. By similar, I mean your game is called .defrag and mine is Defrag. So... pretty much exactly the same. I didn't have any idea that your game was titled .defrag until after I had been working on my own game for a few weeks, then I saw your game and my heart sank.

I know it could be extremely frustrating to see another game on this site with a title almost exactly the same as yours, so if you want me to change my title I will. My game isn't going to be anything like yours, but never the less I don't want to steal your title.

EDIT: Redacted.

I didn't have fun, but that's my fault. I hope you had fun making this.
That sounds better. Thank you =)
Just for the record, going forward, how would you like your critique handed to you? Because believe you me, none of us are immune to it, and I've got some things I'd genuinely like to say about my experience. I was hoping the original post wouldn't be too heavy, but I was swiftly corrected.

Disliking something is expected.
One thing is offering feedback, behaving like a dick while offering said critique is another. I have no doubt that the way you felt about the experience was genuine, but the way you presented your comment was a bundle of contradictions, and frankly, not quite mature.
For instance, how can you go on a tirade after simply playing the game for only the first 10 minutes when the whole game lasts surely more than that? That only makes me think that you literally opened the game, played for 10 minutes, got frustrated, and quit. Not to mention you then said the game was a "pretentious art game" when a) I've never said it was an "art" game since I think ALL video games should be recognized as an artistic medium and labels like that should be taken lightly since they do NOT represent the entirety of the product, and b) the game itself does not pretend to be anything other than an experience to be played.

I gladly reply to feedback when it's offered presentably for everyone to read since all posts here are public, not just for me as the author, so hopefully you now understand why it's important to take a step back before posting anything.
