Let me tell you a horror story...

Recently I saw a highlighted game... Fear Society 2!
Without knowing what was about (but ok, I guessed it was a horror game and not an rpg or humorous parody game!) I decided to search and try the first game, because that number "2" required to experience a first one that may be better or (more likely from my experience) a bit less refined.
I also do not know if there are links between the two games, anyway here's the review of the first Fear Society!

Fear Society is a game inspired by the TV show "Are You Afraid Of The Dark", a Canadian horror anthology television series. The series was about a group of teenagers that in every episode told a a horror story, but the whole episode that the storyteller narrated was instead shown to the television viewer.

And this game? well it's exactly the same! We have four teenagers and four stories (plus the extras) that you may play in the order you want, it doesn't matter,

The game is about four different tales and no one will decide the order, start from the last if you really really want!

Let's start from the first (still without telling much otherwise you will lose the fun of listen/play the stories, of course!), "Tyler": this is the story I liked most and it is (in my opinion) probably the most original and interesting of the four. The premise is the story of a woman that lost her son in a part... and has to find him! Unfortunately this story has a mapping that I think it is inferior (see big, nearly empty floors, repetitions of the same items, etc) to the other episodes, and it's a pity since this part has notes, writings that may be read and add to the experience.

The second story is "The Maniac", and it's a classical slashes story: two sisters chased by a maniac (duh!) in a forest. Nothing really exciting and new from a plot point of view, classical chase scenes and so on, but at least the forest looks better than the maps of the previous episode. It also has some nice interactions and two endings, not bad at all.

The third, "Haunted House" is... about a house that is haunted of course! Again, nothing new, but mapping is ok and this part has some nice puzzles, but nothing more.

"Penelope, the last tale start with an interesting premise: it is about the protagonist being initiated to a cult where you exchange your soul for making a wish real. Apparently it is the most interesting but unfortunately this is about visiting some barren rooms to solve some puzzles. Few choices or decisions are available and no one has impact on the ending, this is also the less "horror" tale of the four... so it turn out to be just meh, pity!

This game is about horror stories... still there is gameplay included!

Final Verdict
Fear Society is an interesting experiment, a game that tells some interactive stories, the realization of the concept is unfortunately not so good: while I do not mind the puzzles, graphics and all the rest of the aspects are rather generic, mapping is mediocre, stories are not so original, and the game lacks of that something that may make it stand out.
Pity. Still it is not a bad game, there aren't errors or problems and it may provide some good time, as it does not give a hard challenge to the player. Maybe the recent Fear Society 2 will improve the aspectnof this first game?
We will see...next time!
