Name: Linear Motion Battle System

Developer: AznChipmunk

Impressions: This is a tech demo, so I am foregoing my usual review format. This is going to be a fairly short review. This system uses the parallax system to use a background as the environment. The image gives the appearance of 3d, but it is a side scrolling battle system. This took a great deal of work to implement, as it entirely uses the parallax and picture system. I couldn't see this as being usable to anyone but the original developer due to it's complexity. It relies entirely on pictures, bypassing charsets and battle charsets, for character animation and control. It would make a nice system for a fighting game, provided it wasn't as limited as what we see in this tech demo (you only get two moves; attack and jump). That said, I would love to see a game with this system implemented. I've seen this kind of mapping done on 2k and 2k3 games, before but it's not something I see often. I'll be looking to see if any games by the dev use this system.

As you can see, the system has a stylistic appearance that one typically sees in anime side scrolling games. The control is excellent, though collision detection could be better. As soon as you leave the ground, attacks miss you. A wider area of effect could compensate for this. Also, the character's apparent ability to run through each other looks rather cumbersome. Still, the pros of this system far outweigh the cons. This page is old. I'll have to see if the developer is still active.
