This is an experimental game, using an experimental engine... Don't expect the world to be served to you on a 3 piece Triforce.

Princess Zelda has been taken by the evil wizard Agahnim and it's up to Link to rescue her. Return to the golden age of Zelda and rediscover what made Zelda so great. This game features many of the graphics, items, and puzzles that can be found in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Fight enemies in real time with your sword, boomerang, bow, hook shot, or whatever you can pick up and throw at them.

The Legend of Zelda (Solarus Edition) was created using Solarus 1.5.0. This engine was solely created to make games like Zelda and uses Lua scripting. If you have played Zelda fan games made with RPG Maker or Zelda Classic then you owe it to yourself to see the advantages of the Solarus engine.

How does this game relate to the game "The Legend of Zelda : Mystery of Solarus"? Is it a remake with a newer engine?

The Legend of Zelda: Mystery of Solarus is a fan game made by the Solarus team. (ie. The same team that made the engine made a game for people to play / use material. It can be downloaded from the same page as the engine.) This is not a remake of that game. I did much of the mapping / and even some scripting myself (Lua shares some similar aspects to Ruby, so it wasn't a huge leap.) The game does use assets and code from that game, and I give proper credit, which is under the terms of using material from that game (The terms also require that I allow people to use materials that I used, which is why I tell people they are free to use what they wish.)
The game I was referring to was made in RPG Maker 2000 by Christopho and Netgamer. It has the following title screen.

And yes, it dates!

The Solarus engine looks really cool. I'll try this new game!

I wasn't aware of its history in RPG Maker, but I found the official history:

The Legend of Zelda: Mystery of Solarus DX is set to be a direct sequel to The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past on the SNES, using the same graphics and game mechanisms. Zelda Mystery of Solarus DX is the first game made with the Solarus engine and in fact, Solarus was primarily designed for this game.

Zelda: Mystery of Solarus DX is actually an enhanced remake of a first creation, Zelda: Mystery of Solarus. This first creation, developed with RPG Maker 2000, was released in 2002 and was only available in French. The DX project was unveiled on April 1st, 2008. Its objectives are to correct the many flaws of its predecessor: the battle system, the bosses, the use of items, etc.

However, that is hardly all of it as new graphical elements and musics will accompany you throughout the game. This Deluxe version will be the opportunity for players to relive the adventure in a brand new way, or to discover it for the first time if you’ve never played it before!

It appears that the team wasn't satisfied with what RPG Maker could do and made their own engine. And the engine is free, and the terms of use even allow you to make commercial games with it.
Seems like a perfect engine for this type of games.

It certainly doesn't have the issues that Zelda Classic has. I was considering even making an Alundra game with it, but even with Spriters Resource it would take me a long time before I could even begin developing the game.
As a zelda fan, I enjoyed playing this game very much!
The ending credits were good.
Some of the puzzles were cleverly designed.
In my not so humble opinion, the engine itself
is vastly better than zelda classic.

I'm glad you enjoyed this short little adventure.
I have wanted to make a Zelda fan game for a long time, but wanted something that was capable of pulling it off right.

It's good to see that my comment raised your curiosity: we both learned more of the history of the Solarus engine.
I just finished this game and I had a lot of fun playing it. :)
It felt very nostalgic. The dungeons were very nice, not too simple and not too difficult. I got a bit stuck a few times trying to find out where I have to go next (that also felt very nostalgic XD), but in the end I managed to beat the end boss and had a very enjoyable experience.
I tried this but couldn't seem to find my sword. I think it's a bad choice to go so long without being directed to a sword. I think I ended up in a dungeon with blue and red switches. I tried to progress in the hopes that my sword was in there but there was no way to do it. So I quit.

Too bad. It's a great engine.

Also the way the engine works, I was able to get max rupees within a minute in the first town. Putting high end rupees under pots is a bad idea.

The old woman tells you where the sword is. On a cliff just outside town. I mean go east past the gate and go south immediately. Also the video on my page goes through the first couple minutes.

But point taken. Many people have had difficulty finding the sword, so I guess it was a design mistake to put it there.
I talked to every NPC in town and I don't recall being told where the sword is. I can try again at some point and see if I just missed it. Still, I shouldn't be able to go anywhere without the sword. If that were the case, I would have eventually found it.

Nothing reveals Humanity so well as the games it plays. A game of betrayal, where the most suspicious person is brutally murdered? How savage.

This was a fun short little Zelda game!

I would like to point out it's possible to get the red mail before the blue mail though, and if you do so, rather than keeping the red mail, you get the inferior blue mail.

That might also be possible for the shield too, if you ignore the treasure chest that is sitting in your house. (Probably should have put some variable that placed something else in the chest or just left it open. Don't know why the Solarus developer didn't script this possibility out? ie. just not equipping the item if you own something superior.)
Nice looking game, kory_toombs. I'm unfamiliar with this engine. I have only gotten the spacebar to work so far. Could you explain the controls, please. Thanks

Sorry, I just noticed the playthrough.
