PewDiePie Surprise

Back to Felix is a surrealist game created using RPG Maker VX Ace. The current version of the game is still a demo (Reviewed on September 29, 2016.) I actually wasn't sure what genre to put this game in when I was reviewing it, but I can tell you this is one of the more interesting / weird games I have played in quite some time.

The art direction of this game is just amazing. The sprites and faces are some of the best work I have seen in RPG Maker to date. And there's art within art. In the game your character will interact with objects and doodle little drawings. And when you want to pay with a card for things you get the best Master Card commercial I have ever seen. (Not to mention that I have the hots for the semi naked girl in the movie theater.)

The way the world really works!

The story centers around PewDiePie, a famous YouTuber that most people on RMN should know by now. Or the story seems to center around him. This is what you don't really know, or the game doesn't really reveal in the demo. There is a part in the game where it's suggested that you may have a mental illness and only believe that you are PewDiePie. Though I also got the distinct feeling that it was possible that you could be PewDiePie, but PewDiePie wasn't as important as he thought he was. When I first found out that I was PewDiePie I had a certain dislike for where the story was going. But as more things about my character were revealed I began to realize that it wasn't really important if the game was about PewDiePie or not.

I'm not one of his subscribers.

The game play isn't that complicated. You need to talk to people and interact with your environment to progress the game. I wouldn't even consider the difficulty of the game to be on the same level as a puzzle game. This game involves the character of Felix / PewDiePie and the world he lives in. You do certain tasks and more of his world gets revealed. The biggest task you need to complete is to collect money to pay for an expensive dinner you and your girlfriend just ate. To do this you will just walk around town and interact with characters. While the game play isn't that deep, it's more the story and character interactions that are the driving force behind this game.

The only way I can really sum up my experience in this game is to say that I want to play more. This game was strange and interesting at the same time. It has sort of peaked my interest as to where it could go from here. I want more to be revealed and I want to learn more about this world. And isn't that the whole point of a demo? While not perfect or deep, the art and story direction carry this game to a 4 / 5.

Thank you for taking time to review, I appreciate that!

The game play does not get much deeper from that point, as you said - this is more about the story and the little details in it. But the story itself will progress deep.

Maybe I'll do a let's play video when it's finished. Gotta beat PewDiePie to the punch.

This was pleasantly mental. Admittedly, I'm not the biggest fan of gross-out humour, but this still managed to keep me playing right to the end. Nice work! I'll try and put up a review soon.
