Life isn't all that exciting in quiet Border Town for our hero, who spends most days hanging out with his best friend Benjamin. Long expected to take over the mundane life of tending the family inn, our hero wistfully craves a life of adventure. An even bigger burn: Some prophet visited Border Town a long time ago, and foretold that Benjamin would grow into the legendary hero. Talk about living under someone's shadow!

And live under a "Shadow" they did: For stories have increased in recent days of a great dragon of the same name, Shadow, rising up and amassing an empire to take over the land. Monsters have increased in number and strength, and some cities have fallen. It is clear that something isn't quite right.

Back in Border Town, things are peaceful... for now. However, on the eve of the dubious ceremony celebrating our hero's new job, Benjamin goes missing. When the would-be-innkeeper goes to search for him, he gets wrapped up in all the adventure he could have ever dreamed of, as his little journey takes him on a vast quest across the world, to Shadow's doorstep, and beyond.

It is time for the unlikely innkeeper -- and you -- to Begin a New Quest.

This game features a fully new world and new characters but inspired by the Dragon Warrior series for the NES. On the quest, many familiar monsters, spells, equipment, graphics, and music will be encountered -- mixed in with some new creations of my own in all of these departments. The game features:

-30-40 hours of gameplay.
-Some original music and graphics along with many old favourites.
-A huge bestiary of over 300 monsters, each with a Monster Entry for the library at Elderwood hidden somewhere in the game.
-A carefully-balanced mix of open-world exploration and focused linearity.
-Various sidequests including the monster library, the alchemy pot, the lottery, optional dungeons, and more.
-Fully functioning features that any Dragon Warrior fan would expect, including the "Imperial Scrolls of Honour," losing half gold/keeping items and levels upon defeat in battle; individual items carried in battle; Houses of Healing; Outside, Return, Chance, Sacrifice, and Farewell spells; Battle Mechanics that have been carefully tinkered with to strongly feel balanced in the same way that Dragon Warrior games originally were.
-A branching story with multiple endings and substantial postgame material, including bonus characters and a challenge boss.
-A packed-in world map. :)

I remember seeing this game hosted back on the old Woodus Forums, I will definitely give this game a try when I can.

That would be amazing! If you do, Kaliesto, keep me in the loop with how it's going.
Need help. I have water crest, moon crest, sun crest, final key and shadow key. I also obtained Mirror of Raw. Where am I supposed to go from here? I am really enjoying this game. It is one of the best rpg that I have ever played.
Wow, I really appreciate that!

Have you been to Nazrah and to Carnelia?

There is a major storyline section that you have to go through up on that plateau, where you'll figure out some major plot points, and you can access it once you have the final key and the Golden Pickaxe.

To get the Golden Pickaxe, look at the world map and find the island chain in the southeast part of the world. Visit it to learn some cool things about your main character's past and to obtain the Pickaxe; once you've obtained that, you are ready to go to Carnelia (and watch out, the monsters on the way are touuughhh!).

Good luck, let me know if you figure it out!
I have beaten Owen on top of tower and Ramona hath control over Miles and she takes off. I have no idea as to where to go from here. Also, while going to Carnelia, in the beginning of the cave I came across a soldier on the ground who has fallen from top and there is a treasure chest around there. I do not know how to get to it. As I go up stairs and try to go around in search of that treasure box, I keep falling down through floor. Please help. I have water, moon, star and sun crusts.
Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
Wow, good for you!

First, I'll try and explain that cave. If you fall through the correct floors, you will fall into a different passageway and be able to collect that treasure chest. One "easy" way is to map out the region on a piece of paper. But the trick is that it isn't random at all: the pattern of skulls on the floor below tell you exactly where those pitfalls will appear on the floor above. :)

The next place to go in the story is to go back to the Underworld. If you haven't been to Branvaria castle yet, it is west of the Sun Shrine, and accessible by foot. At Branvaria, you can take a ferry and head toward the Dark God's castle!

While it is technically optional, I would recommend at this point that you take a look for the Life Crest, which you have probably heard about here and there. To find it, search the world using Ramia for some woods you haven't visited (near the fairy fountain) and then advance the Alchemy Pot sidequest a few steps.

Best of luck. You're almost there!
Thanks for reply. Now I have gotten all five crests including life crest from fairy and using these crests I was able to go to another underground hard place. After Miles left the party with Ramona, we are only three in the party. Am I supposed to get any other person or we three only are supposed to keep going on? This game is challenging and involved and I love everything about it thus far. We are at level 47 at the moment.
Please guide. Thanks.
I'm so glad! You're coasting in toward the end. If you can find your way to the Last Refuge, Balghast's castle will not be far beyond. You're stuck with three people until you get there. Best of luck -- you don't have far to go now! :)
Hi. I'm at the end of the game now but there's a few things I'm having trouble with.

1 - How in the hell do I get into the Hidden Library in the cave that leads to the underworld? I've been through both the entrance at Ong & the old man's shed north of Matarona. I've literally spent hours grinding against monsters trying to find a way in (from both sides) but I can't find a way in?

2 - 3rd path to the Underworld. The game references that there are actually 3 different paths. I've found the 2 that I already mentioned. If the travel door at Rubiss' Shrine doesn't count then where is the 3ed way in? Maybe it allows access to the hidden library.

3 - What are the alchemy ingredients Gold Bar, Perfect Diamond & Brimstone Marble for? I'm on the last recipe now (combining 3 staves) & those 3 never came up as needed ingredients. It's mentioned that there are 5 ingredients in order of value so I hesitated to sell them yet.

I've also got some complaints as well.

1 - Leaves of the World Tree suck! They only revive you at 1 HP, only to die immediately afterward when in battle. The original DW/DQ games always had them revive you at full HP (like the Revive spell).

2 - Wizard Rings suck too! I've come across 3 in my 100+ hours of playing & each and every one of those damn things broke after the 1st use. I don't know what their breaking rate % is, but in the original games they had like a 10% chance of breaking.

3 - The Sun Crest should've completely lit up the cave that holds the Mirror of Ra. I spent a ridiculous amount of hours getting lost in there. I actually overlooked the staircase leading down to it because those tunnels that form square loops made me not think there was anything else in that section.

4 - Star Crest puzzle had no explanation to solve it whatsoever. I thought it was a 'Lights Out' type of puzzle until I noticed that each switch actually triggered it's entire row & column. Solving that puzzle was nothing short of beginner's luck.

5 - Ramona & Hero fight was WHY TO CHEAP! I was at level 45 or slightly higher & she slaughtered my party easily. It took a few tries to learn that having a Bounce effect is what determines whether you live or die in that fight.

6 - For the longest time I could not figure out how to proceed in the Rubiss Seal Dungeon. I couldn't figure out how to get past those stupid star labeled walls. It felt like a total fluke when I stumbled across another small medal at the old man's house near the Moon Tower & ran off to get me another Sage's Focus & my medal amount went over 50 (I knew that was the amount he wanted). Then to have him hand over the 'Mysterious Keystone' which removes those stupid star walls. Shame on you for not leaving some sort of hint that that was how to get past that part (it was driving nuts for several hours!)

7 - Empyrea won't land on snow, dirt roads (Fortier) or swamps. Swamps may be understandable but not landing on snow or dirt roads makes no sense.

8 - It would've been nice if you actually included a real World Map in-game. The image file version is bare-bones & lackluster as is & I can tell through zooming that you purposely covered up some landmarks on that map. In fact, a map of the underworld would be nice too, even though most of the paths in there are linear as hell.

Anyway, I hope you'll help me with the Hidden Library at least, since I don't have the patience to keep searching for it & as a completionist, it's driving me insane!
Heya,

First of all, thanks for playing the game! I'm sorry that some things have been frustrating, but I'm happy to try and answer your questions and I hope that overall it's been a positive experience.

1 & 2. The third way in is guarded by the Red Dragons in the cave to Carnelia. If you go down the path that you're warned against going down, and fight against two sets of four Red Dragons, you will find stairs that lead to the third path. ON that path, you will find the ancient library that hosts a lot of flavoury history and many missing monster entries.

3. There are still a few recipes yet - the Brimstone Marble and Perfect Diamond are indeed used in the Alchemy Pot, one time apiece. Gold Bars are more useful, and can be used repeatedly at the end for the last recipe. Any extra Diamonds or Marbles you're lucky enough to find can be sold for a bunch of money.

As for your complaints...fair enough, but:

1: I'm pretty sure they only restored 1 HP in Dragon Warrior 2, but I understand. In any case, they were definitely meant to be used outside of battle chiefly, because they certainly do suck inside battle, I agree with you.

2: Bad luck? There is exactly a 1-in-11 chance for the Wizard's Ring to crumble with each use, so having them break quickly COULD happen, though it's unlikely.

3: I do like the way the Sun Crest works for that cave, because it's meant to invoke the Radiant Spell from DW1. Personal preference, though.

4: I can understand the criticism here, though to be fair many old puzzles, like the Eginbear rock puzzle or a couple of things in the pyramids in DW3, doesn't come with an explanation either. I am looking into writing an FAQ when I get the chance to accompany the game, though. :)

5: Bounce is certainly critical in the game. In playtesting, this wasn't the fight that my testers and I found super-hard though; it was the fight against Abraxis and his sentries that was absolutely nuts. The Rubber Hat (obtainable from the Medal King) does greatly reduce damage from Lightning magic. Note also that the hero tends to very quickly run out of MP, so if you can survive the first few turns, the battle typically becomes much easier after he is left with just his basic attacks.

6: There is a little bit of lore scattered throughout the game that hints at this, but it is tough to figure out how to access the innards of that dungeon, I agree. Again, this is something that an FAQ would be helpful for, but I'd like to point out that many other RPGs are "guilty" of having bonus/optional material that is tough to figure out with little or no direction (FFX, FFXII).

7: Yeah, it doesn't make sense. RPG Maker VX Ace has a really weird and unfortunate vehicle system where it designates what tiles any given vehicle *shall* be able to travel over and land on, and so I was limited - and I couldn't find a script to correct this either. I agree that this is a frustrating limitation that I actually specifically looked into solving but didn't come up with anything.

8: Point taken. It probably wouldn't be too hard to produce a blown-up image file with a few more details to help in navigation, but the included map is meant to sort of simulate the old-school crappy maps you'd receive in your instruction manual. Making stuff like that is really fun for me, though, so it might be a cool little project to include with a later update.

I really appreciate your feedback. Again, I hope that these issues haven't been too frustrating. It's been a long-winded labour of love, and all of your suggestions are well taken. Best of luck if you do decide to go seek out that library. :)
That path! I took the warning too literally & thought that if I tried to go past the statues that they would literally burn me alive & get a game over instantly! You probably should reword that warning to something like "If thou wishes to proceed then prove thyself in a trial by fire" or something like that.

As for the World Map issue, I distinctively remember a script that helps produce an actual image directly from the game itself. You can find the script here if you plan on making an actual screenshot image world map: http://www.rpgmakercentral.com/topic/3266-map-screenshot/

Anyway, thanks for the help. After my initial playthough, I give it a review & sometime in the future replay it as a Let's Play series.
No problem! I really appreciate the time you've taken and your suggestions. Many points people have made are helping to inform me on my next project too, which is in its very-preliminary stages. Thanks again!
I'm busy beta-testing for a while. But I will continue after that.
I just finished the game & collected the last of the boss entries. The only 2 entries I'm missing are the Metal Medley one & 1 last Beast entry (not sure which one it is). I'm disappointed that there weren't any actual 'item' rewards for finding all of the entries for an entire monster family. Even worse, that Malghast boss is a fucking cheap prick! That Gigaslash cheap-shotting my entire team is bullshit! I did everything I could to defend myself (Barrier, Magic Wall, Bounce, Increase x2-3, etc.) and he blows that all away & slaughters my party without any chance of survival!

I also couldn't finish the alchemy because the drop rates are stingy as fuck! All I needed for the 3 wands recipe was a Staff of Punishment, but nooooo! Never found one in a chest or got a drop. In that hidden library I found a chest that was empty! Talk about a slap to the face! Could've just gave me that Staff of Punishment instead! Grrrr! Well, the game was great up until after I beat it. I'll write a review for it over the weekend. At least its inspired me to start up Dragon Warrior Monsters again & hopefully Dragon Warrior 6 some time soon (haven't played it yet)
The last bonus bosses are mostly meant for those people who really love to grind to astronomical levels for whatever reason. BUT, every one of the monster bosses unlocked in the library has an extremely high drop rate of at least one rare item. In fact, to find a Staff of Punishment most easily, Hecate (the boss of the "Humanoid" section of the library) drops them with a 1/4 frequency. :) Evil Wands, found on one of the paths down to the Underworld, are your other option, but they drop with a 1/64 rate.

Metal Medley is tough, found in the Carnelia Cave in a pile of bones in the poisonous marsh (the "bog" that Elucidus' friend fell into and died in, in the lore found by reading the note on the same floor... those are apparently his bones.)

I'm glad you did as much as you did though - I appreciate your time and effort and I'm glad you enjoyed it! If you have any friends who might be a fan, don't hesitate to share. :)

Don't monster entries have that twinkling star to indicate them? Because if there was one still there I would've noticed, unless you didn't use the twinkling animation in order to hide it.
Yeah, almost all of them do. This one was "under the bones," etc: I mostly wanted the player to be awake after reading the death note down the hall. It is pretty tough to find in retrospect, but maybe that's OK. Perhaps on the other hand, I could write a stronger hint in that note. :)
Am I gonna be able to choose my party members eventually, or is it a fixed party the whole way through?

Mostly wondering if it's safe to use these stat up items I am sitting on.

DAMN :) Stuck I Am....
Can't open door SW of town, Can't get into cursed forest, and can't do something else but can't remember what it is :)

Is there anything I can do?????

Hope this is not too vague. :)
Hey guys!

Rebel -- Your party will change throughout the game. I typically hold off on using my stat-up items as a rule in games, but most every party member you meet WILL have to be involved in a major battle at some point, so will have to be "decent". Also, every seed can be dropped (typically rarely) from monsters, so there isn't a finite number of them.

Linkis -- What have you achieved so far? :) You have a few first things to think about:

1. After you first get Ramona, your goal is to travel to the fairy fountain in the desert SW of the first town. Defeat the boss there; you should get a Fairy Flute.

2. Before anything else, take the Fairy Flute to the wizard in the library in Velmont. You will trigger a cutscene in which you receive a new party member and you are told to travel to Anville to investigate the disappearance of the King. (This is easy to miss, though your party members do tell you to head back to Velmont after this scene. Talking to NPCs is crucial.)

3. At any time, you may travel NW of Polona to retrieve the Silver Key. This should not be very taxing if you're at Level 4 or higher (or so).

4. Once you have Owen and you go to Anville, speak with the King to trigger another cutscene and reveal the way forward.

Hopefully that helps. Keep me in the loop: Hopefully it's going OK!

BOY, am I in trouble :)

I have 2 small medals AND the silver key.

BUT NO FLUTE :(

I get hungry for GOLD when I want better weapons and armor :(
Could I have sold the FLUTE ????

OH, both my guy and Ramona are at level 12. (i'm a grinder) :)

Should I start over to get the Flute ??

There is an area..where you can see what appears to be a long grassy? area with a transport pool at the end but you need to open a locked gate but the Silver key does not open that gate...

I'm an old gamer so might be a little bit slow :)
