Life isn't all that exciting in quiet Border Town for our hero, who spends most days hanging out with his best friend Benjamin. Long expected to take over the mundane life of tending the family inn, our hero wistfully craves a life of adventure. An even bigger burn: Some prophet visited Border Town a long time ago, and foretold that Benjamin would grow into the legendary hero. Talk about living under someone's shadow!

And live under a "Shadow" they did: For stories have increased in recent days of a great dragon of the same name, Shadow, rising up and amassing an empire to take over the land. Monsters have increased in number and strength, and some cities have fallen. It is clear that something isn't quite right.

Back in Border Town, things are peaceful... for now. However, on the eve of the dubious ceremony celebrating our hero's new job, Benjamin goes missing. When the would-be-innkeeper goes to search for him, he gets wrapped up in all the adventure he could have ever dreamed of, as his little journey takes him on a vast quest across the world, to Shadow's doorstep, and beyond.

It is time for the unlikely innkeeper -- and you -- to Begin a New Quest.

This game features a fully new world and new characters but inspired by the Dragon Warrior series for the NES. On the quest, many familiar monsters, spells, equipment, graphics, and music will be encountered -- mixed in with some new creations of my own in all of these departments. The game features:

-30-40 hours of gameplay.
-Some original music and graphics along with many old favourites.
-A huge bestiary of over 300 monsters, each with a Monster Entry for the library at Elderwood hidden somewhere in the game.
-A carefully-balanced mix of open-world exploration and focused linearity.
-Various sidequests including the monster library, the alchemy pot, the lottery, optional dungeons, and more.
-Fully functioning features that any Dragon Warrior fan would expect, including the "Imperial Scrolls of Honour," losing half gold/keeping items and levels upon defeat in battle; individual items carried in battle; Houses of Healing; Outside, Return, Chance, Sacrifice, and Farewell spells; Battle Mechanics that have been carefully tinkered with to strongly feel balanced in the same way that Dragon Warrior games originally were.
-A branching story with multiple endings and substantial postgame material, including bonus characters and a challenge boss.
-A packed-in world map. :)

Nope, Catherine doesn't learn RobMagic - that Staff is exactly what I used myself, through the whole game. Note that after my own experience and that of a couple playtesters, I actually nerfed that staff severely from what it used to be, too... it used to ALSO restore MP every turn, but she was basically an infinite power plant of healing that way.

I agree with you. I think the game's difficulty is just right like this.
So far it's fun but kind of wish there where background in battles....
Ok i played i would say a 30 minutes and here are a few ideas that i for one feel would make the game more fun.

1.The power to DASH i feel a good speed is something like from Brave Hero Yuusha (If you have never played it it's a really fun RPG game if you ask me)

2.True Fullscreen as in no black square around the screen (If there is a way to get rid of it plz tell me thanks) I would say fullscreen can't be done but Brave Hero Yuusha made their game true fullscreen so i know it can be done.

3.Last thing i don't see happening ever but is backgrounds in battle would be nice never been a huge fan of just pure black backgrounds in battles.
Hey Ryan, thanks for the input! I appreciate the notions and I agree that I like those features myself. I designed this to be a fan-game to specifically feel like the old NES games, and the NES Dragon Warrior games had black battle backgrounds (which I adopted, partly so that I had less graphics work to do!).

The dash is something that actually was in some of the testing versions, but eventually I took it out. It IS true that it isn't a feature of the original games, but that to me is a poor excuse... however, there are a couple of events that happen in the game now that do not trigger properly when dash is implemented. I believe that these are events where the game is checking to see in a particular loop whether your sprite is in contact with a particular tile, and when you can zoom past, there is a chance that this check doesn't happen properly. After investigating, I decided to remove this as a conscious decision.

While both of the above aren't going to change for any future releases of this game, they will definitely be implemented in future games that I make, just because of the kinds of games I want to make going forward. :)

Finally - I am not sure what options RPG Maker VX Ace has for fullscreen beyond the defaults! If you hit "F1" you can set it so that it launches in fullscreen instead, but I get the black band as well. I could look into some of the scripts and so on that people have used to obtain different fullscreen effects, though if any exist.

Thanks again!!
ok cool thanks for hearing me out and i hope you are not to upset with me not wanting to play your game all the way to the end i'm just picky about my rpgs :)
Oh, no offense taken whatsoever! I'm under no illusions that my game won't be for everyone, but that's why there are thousands of 'em out there. If you ever do get back into it and you have any questions about anything, don't hesitate to ask me. :)
I have done everything except stand on my head to get to the east tower. I have the cape of the wind but I cannot seem to find where to jump off. I just end up in the same tower. What am I doing wrong?

Dianne
You have to equipe the cape and then jump from the top of the West Devil Horn.
I have the cape equipped. I also don't know if I am at the very top. I can see another area I cannot reach.
You can drop down from the inner rings in the tower and reach new ways up.

I am writing a walkthrough so try to look at this:

It's missing the last two dungeon though.
Thanks for your help and for the walkthrough.

Hey man, like, for real, this this is an excellent fan game and very true to the spirit of Dragon Quest, but I'm stuck regarding the puzzle in Balghast's castle concerning the statues, even after consulting the tiny library near the castle's entrance.
Either the information is purposefully vague or I'm not mentally equipped atm to figure out the puzzle which is embarrassing to admit considering that I was a math major in college.
I tried to treat it as two independent systems overlapping each other with the "en guarde" knight as the puzzle's conclusion:
3
1 | 2 0 1 2 | "en guarde" knight
1

Here's a layout of what I've tried:
E = "en guarde" knight

x x x E

x x 3 x
1 x x x
1 x x E

x x 1 x
2 x x 2
x x x E

putting these two independent systems together in the overall matrix:

x x (3,1) x
(1,2) x x 2
1 x x E

It also mentions the overall total concerning the numbers of the rows and columns, but I still can't seem to figure out what that might mean. I've tried other things taking the totality into account, but I constantly end up unintentionally multiplying the matrices on the back of an envelope as if that's going to derive the answer to the dang puzzle somehow lol

Any help would be very appreciated, dude! Thanks! ^-^

Richard, try this setup. X means lighted, O means not lighted:

---2012
3 XOXX
1 XOOO
1 OOOX

As you can see, this pattern fulfills all conditions (especially that the knight in the lower right corner has to be "en garde" = lighted), so it should work - even though I can't test it right now.

Try this
Hey BrainTemple (and fellow math major - always wonderful!),

Listen to Firefly - a veritable beacon of good knowledge. Hopefully that helps.

Thanks a bunch for the kind words. The total inspiration for this game came when it looked increasingly unlikely that we would see a DQX release in the west. What else can a frustrated DQ fan do but put together a game of his own and hope that people latch on?

Best of luck with the final sections of the game! Keep me in the loop with how you're doing. :)
Yo, thanks guys!
I guess I was overthinking the puzzle; it was the "en guarde" knight that seemed to really mess with my head for some reason. ^^;

Oh, Wonderslime, you a math major too? Heck yeah, bro!

If anything, for the most part, this game totally satisfies and makes up for the fact that we don't have Dragon Quest X in the west.
I haven't been hooked on a game like this in awhile ^^

Also, keeping you in the loop, I got to Balghast and before I could have Catherine setup any magical or breath defense spells, he blasted her ass inside out with a critical hit, and I was screwed from the get go lol
I think my only complaint is that since the hero dies and Benjamin takes over the lead, you only have one character with life restoring spells. I could've potentially recovered from Balghast's 500 damage critical hit otherwise. Catherine only had around 270 max HP ;-;
I'm gonna level grind some in case something happens like that again, so that I may still hopefully stand a chance with just Ben and Melmut.
Regardless, the game's awesome dude, and I'd love to see more games from you

Peace ^_~

Edit:
Okay, well Balghast really isn't as bad as I thought considering his surprisingly low HP count haha
Stroke of bad luck the first time around. He still busted everyone up though. Only had Melmut left after that fight was over.

Edit 2:
Another boss fight apparently. Let's see if I can win with just Melmut against Wythefarr.

Edit 3:
Cool, she tore his ass into the tenth dimension with two Blazemosts right off the bat lol

Edit 4:
Hopefully Balghast won't be back, and I can just deal with Wythefarr.

Edit 5:
*sees Balghast chillin'*
*Turns game off*
I'll level grind more later. @~@

Edit 6:
having mental breakdown regarding these two bosses slammed back to back anticipating another experience like DQII's Cave to Rhone
This is it sir!

A couple of pro tips:

The major thing that seems to get most people (and my playtesters) was her Staff attack. This is a lightning-elemental attack, and very few items offer lightning resistance. If you haven't already spent your medals, consider going to the Medal King's palace and investing in a Rubber Hat: These should dramatically reduce the damage you take from those attacks.

Second: Bounce, bounce, bounce. So useful. Throw a speed-boosting item on Catherine and get a Bounce spell up as quickly as possible and the old hag will do a lot of the work in bringing herself down.

Good luck! And remember, nothing could be as bad as the road to Rhone.
I have been in basement of shadows castle for days and no way to progress. I have sent rocks North. Anyone have detailed instructions on how to proceed?

Download my Walkthrough. (some post up)
^^^ Absolutely listen to Firefly!

Something that a couple of my testers have done is draw a really careful map. The place is sprawling, one of the biggest dungeons in the game. It really helps to remember where you've tried/not tried to go, and where every door and stairway leads. Generally, every door and stairway is "geographically correct" meaning that they should lead to somewhere that makes sense on the next floor/screen, etc.

Good luck!
